Belle & Sebastian - Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John Lyrics
[Stuart:]
What a waste, I could've been your lover
What a waste, I could've been your friend
Perfect love is like a blossom that fades so quick
When it's blowing up a storm in May
Travel south until your skin turns warmer
Travel south until your skin turns brown
Put a language in your head and get on a train
And then come back to the one you love
[Norah:]
Yeah you're great, you're just part of this lifetime of dreaming
That extends to the heart of this long summer feeling
Quiet night, you see the tv's glowing
Being you I'm getting out of a party crowd
Can I see what's underneath your bed?
Can I stay until the milkman's working?
Can I stay until the café awakes?
[Together:]
Do you hate me in the light?
Did you get a fright?
When you looked across from where you lay
Yeah you're great, you're just part of this lifetime of dreaming
That extends to the heart of this long summer feeling
All the history of wars I invent in my head
Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John
All the history of wars I invent in my head
Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John
[Stuart:]
What a waste, I could've been your lover
[Norah:]
What a waste, I could've been your friend

First heard this some time in 2011 or 2012. It's 2018, and I'm still asking if I can stay until the milk man's working.

“Yeah you're great, you're just part of this lifetime of dreaming 🎶”
I greatly dislike norah jones.
@jharv813 brevity = wit
+Bryan L. Whatever dude- but my bet says your friends/those around will still request/demand a stronger desire further brevity--simply cuz they dunno what it means and only really want mostly single syllable words to be "talked". When someone explained how what they wanted could match and bolster others efforts at copying a long line of English Majors at most of the campuses in the entire state of Indiana-including the majority at places like Phoenix, which is ubiquitous there.
So sorry to today disagree with your statement, in fact I dismiss it entirely as your random and needless not liking of Norah is typically smiled at as them there are fewer, less competition for parking, seats, bathrooms, etc etc. and sure there is some general "pop" music I would attend (many/most hell no) but the quality of basic interest and thus their projection through their capabilities with the 1)Music/notes utilized coupled with 2)voice)s) chosen to own/add/complement. 3)Use of the band and direction,
Brevity equals wit, my young, fragile minded fellow. And please, get some psychological counseling when you can.
+Bryan L. Spewing out laughable little attempts at saving face won't help... Cuz now you little crap- I'm gonna keep laughing as you go down face first to find amazement in the talents of mr parrot head or whatever you call that court jester who brings you enjoyment. Oh and Norah kicks his ass on talent with guitar even though he's been doing it for whatever 30 more years of that same old crap...
Well, I just think that everybody has the right of ginving their opinion, as long as they are not agressive and ofensive. There'sno need for insulting here. People just didn'tlike the song
this is one of my favorite songs.. just love the feel
Goodbye little Lou...
Norah Jones sounds so amazing in this.
ILuvRockStars1 - I bet Jools Holland introduced them....

Wow to Norah's voice in this song.
Such a good song with detailed emotions in it
...so relaxing.. pretty for summer..
@bezz456 - It sounded like all Kerouac to me: Little Lou or Prophet John could apply (Jean-Louis).
Nora Jones is so boring!!!
North Maan education in music?
@ImperialArmour yayyy
@gossamery come on please stop you probably dont know anything about good music.
@Xayide4Eros To be fair, they had been a great band since the late 90s
what a waste i could been your lover, what a waste i could be your friend...;(
amazing!!!
I'm the first person to dislike this! woohoo!
I still can't believe I'm actually going to see them live.. hope it's gonna be april soon. :D
@Xayide4Eros whoa stop right there! belle & sebastian have been around since about 1996, ca. 5 years before the world even heard of norah jones... so yes, this is a great song, and norah doesn't do a bad job at all in it, but i gravely have to object to you claiming b&s became great artists just because they worked with her, cause in my opinion they are brilliant artists, and stuart murdoch is a lyrical genius.
@StanTier2 lucky!!! I wish I live in Manchester, awesome music & concerts!! (:
Looking forward to seeing them in Manchester next week
@dudleycunningham Luck? This happened because the band Belle and Sebastian asked for Norah. This song is going to be or already is on the latest Belle and Sebastian album, but i found it on Norah's "featuring" Does it not say a lot about a singer when you know of 50+ duets and collaborations she has been on in the last 10 years. I like what i heard so far from them, but my luck came 8 years ago, when i turned the radio on.
@Requiemslove you are lucky! discovering B&S first time was among the happiest time in all my music-listening days. sit down with "if you're felling sinister" or "push barman to open wounds" or "boy with the arab strap" ....and enjoy!
@Obscurestillness pleasure
I'm a huge Norah Jones fan and found this song on her new collab album. But this songs been getting me tuned into Belle and Sebastian. So far from what i heard they are pretty good. The lead singers got a nice voice on him and i like the zany-ness of the videos i seen. As for this song, its awesome.
@fischermatte There was an article in the Independent just before the album came out and Mr Murdoch confirmed that Lou,Jack and John were indeed as I reported.I know that Stuart is a massive Velvet Underground fan (as indeed are all the band) so I guess that's why he name checks him.As with a lot of Stuart's lyrics they can be ambiguous to say the least!
GOD WHERE IS THIS FROM! IT CAN'T JUST BE THE RADIO! IT WAS ON SOMETHING! Soooo familiar. Heard it on indie radio and went crazy, especially because this song decsribes my life right now. Like down to a tee.
this is a beautiful song, stuart and norahs vocals work so well together, especially the harmony they sing together at the the end. love it
jitteryjim, dont often post though, just passes the time also dont always agree with you but it fun to read the arguments!
@bezz456 agreed... it just works mate
@warrenpeterbithell ... nice what mate... whats you user id
cheers for posting,Stan, see you on redissue
Not a great fan of Norah Jones but she is perfect for this song of Stuarts.By the way it's Lou Reed,Jack Kerouac and John Lennon
Try Camera Obscura or Gentle Waves
