Manevră am deaf only when I hear any music other than black metal \m/
It’s almost impossible to hear the bass to any metal bands these days. Really makes having a bass player pointless. It’s not like in the 70s and 80s where the bass would be high or at least listenable in the mix, or they would do they’re own thing instead of following what the guitars were doing.
@greenparrot5 Depends what genre of metal we are talking about. Prog, doom, or even death metal have good bass (doom especially) however in black metal bass has always been quite quiet.

Although Behemoth rules, even to this day and are one of the heaviest bands... They lost all their black metal atmosphere.
Although on one hand I agree, the origins of many extreme metal bands lie in the ghetto beginnings such as this. The 'cheap sound' that makes black metal sound like it does came from the lack of resources. Their recording equipment/instruments were only the very basics, so they did it in a way that it would sound heavier. The problem is it's virtually impossible to genuinely replicate unless they dropped most of their equipment and moved to a basement.

@UnsilentStorms agreed, I think he's wrong. There are plenty of low-fi and hi-fi black metal bands these days. Just lots of reverb and compression, and proper production mixing.
