Bee Gees - South Dakota Morning Lyrics

The sun shines down on a South Dakota morning
And I can see their faces in my eyes
I wish they were behind me
My enemy can find me
If only to remind me that I'm really not alone
All the South Dakota mornings I have known

The eagle flies on a South Dakota morning
And I don't see my eagle anymore
Now stranger, I must kill you
You must survive, but will you
I may just beat you down, but will it even up the score
I think I saw the eagle just once more

The rain comes down on a South Dakota morning
And I can't see the sadness in my town
So let it be my pillow for underneath your willow
Wanna go back to you though your nothing but a town
On the South Dakota grass I lay me down

Wonderfully beautiful song. The Brothers and longtime guitarist Alan Kendall are joined by session drummer Jim Keltner and slide guitarist Sneaky Pete Kleinow with Tommy Morgan on harmonica. I am a huge fan of this time period of the Bee Gees career, 1971 thru 1974.

sounds like they reworked "king and country" for this song.

Actually, "King and Country" was recorded in January, 1973, so it was probably written AFTER "South Dakota Morning" which was recorded the previous year.

Unfortunately for the Bee Gees, this period of their career they were stuck in a rut musically as the music they were composing and recording started sounding too similar with no variation in tempo, all too many ballads from Lonely Days, Run To Me, My World, to Kings and Country. Robert Stigwood knew that and he wanted to change it, so he arranged it so the boys could start working with R&B producer Arif Mardin who in turn suggested that the boys start writing songs with the sounds and funky upbeat tempo of the day, producing songs as Wind of Change, Nights On Broadway, and Jive Talking.
