Beatles, The - The Inner Light Lyrics

Without going out of my door
I can know all things on Earth
Without looking out of my window
I could know the ways of Heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Without going out of your door
You can know all things on Earth
Without looking out of your window
You could know the ways of Heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Arrive without travelling
See all without looking
Do all without doing

The lyrics of this song are from the TAO TE KING: chapter 47
Without going outside, you may know the whole world.
Without looking through the window, you may see the ways of heaven.
The farther you go, the less you know.
    Thus the sage knows without travelling;
    He sees without looking;
    He works without doing.

"See My Friends" was recorded on the 3rd of May 1965. Just for all you "OMG The Beatles were so far ahead of everyone" people.

    M.... T....

true, doesn't mean the Beatles weren't also massively innovative with the Indian influences as well, plus Ticket To Ride with the drone predates See My Friends (by The Kinks for anyone wondering)

    M.... T....

@cybertronian- shitlord Oh of course, never said they weren't. ;)

Quote by GEORGE HARRISON ~ SEPTEMBER,1966 ~ "The urge to be something more than a mere Beatle provoked me to come to India. By learning to play the Sitar, I can give Beatle fans a little more."

  13. r.... m....

Quote by GEORGE HARRISON ~ "Many people feel that life is preordained. I think it is vaguely, but it's still up to the person which way your life is going to go."

  14. r.... m....

Quote by GEORGE HARRISON ~ "I believe much more in the religions of India than in anything I ever learned from Christianity. The difference over here is that their religion is every second and every minute of their lives ~ and it is them, how they act, how they conduct themselves.

Has an nine year old I listened to this when it came out being the B side of Lady Madonna the title made me think it was about an inn with its light left on 😂

  20. V.... ....

This song is very very sweet

  21. T.... m....

This song is honestly one of their greatest achievements. Think about the fact that this song was released in the 1960s by a primarily Rock and Pop band as a B-Side to a piano track. The progression of the band, and Harrison in particular, is astounding.

  22. V.... ....

Because of how obscure this song is in the Beatles catalog, I bet 99% of people in the comments are just as big fans as I am.

  23. G.... K....

The two greatest Beatles are no longer with us.

  24. N.... C....

George's first song on a Beatles single (UK). He would later have Old Brown Shoe and Something.

  25. J.... C....

    Great song b.side.g.h. r.i.p.

  34. j.... g....

How I hate Indian music & that annoying sitar! I Never listened to all of it & never will.

    j.... g....

    There's no sitar here

    j.... g....

Yes there is an annoying sitar here.

    j.... g....

    @joe green no, there isn't.
What you hear are indian instruments like sarod, shehnai, bansuri or tabla among others.
The sound of sarod is very simular to sitar but it isn't

    j.... g....

@José Candal I HATE INDIAN MUSIC & INDIAN INSTRUMENTS! Happy now?

    j.... g....

Why would you even be here ? And why leave a comment ? That’s a lot of effort invested in something you don’t enjoy

  35. F.... ....

My second favourite song of The Beatles

  36. a.... ....

    well remastered. good song

  37. G.... K....

Great song from George considering the indian sitar influence, B side of Lady Madona.
I wouldn't classified this as a psychedelic song that someone wrote despite the pshycodelie time when single was realized.
    The Beatles forever.

  38. T.... &....

How much did the Beatles actually contribute to the song? Of course George was singing, and I presume the lyric is his, and that he was playing sitar. But the others?

    T.... &....

    - Lead Vocals & Musical Direction: George Harrison

This is the line-up of this beautiful song written by George Harrison.

I hope you find it useful :-)

    T.... &....

    @José Candal Thanks!

  39. M.... S....

But the Beatles traveled to make all this music possible. That's the true irony in it. The singing is pretty bad on this song though no one will admit it. Love the Beatles but I hate a few of their tracks. The music here is great... I could do without the vocals

  40. A.... C....

Should of been on an album.

  41. l.... f....

    norwegian wood

  42. l.... ....

I grew up in the Beatles era and thought I had heard every song they released. But never heard this before! Fantastic!!

  43. a.... ....

I have to be in a certain mood for George’s Indian songs but they all have a great message. What makes them for me is the Indian percussion, those beats were so far ahead of their time. The Beatles tapped into that. As for within without you. George martins orchestration elevates the song to a higher level as well

  44. J.... M....

There is such an earnest and simple beauty to this song. I love George's voice in this, especially when he sings the rising 5th in the first "The less one knows."

  45. G.... P....

The sitar and "indian a like" songs are my less favourite Beatles songs. I just can`t like it. :(

    G.... P....

  54. T.... T....

“And then there was one.” So, who will be the last remaining Beatle?

Ringo quote after the Beatles breakup: “I thought about joining a band, but I was bigger than any band in the world.”

“...Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song and I’ll try not to sing out of key.
Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends; mm, I get high with a little help from my friends…
Do you need anybody? I need somebody to love. Could it be anybody? I want somebody to love…”

The Beatles - With a Little Help From My Friends (Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, 1967)

“Nowhere Man don’t worry, take your time don’t hurry, leave it all till somebody else lends you a hand.”

The Beatles - Nowhere Man (my favorite Beatles song!)

  84. S.... g....

I find this little gem way ahead of its time. Apart from the intricate and delicate melody, the actual message it's so incredibly now. Don't go and look for the message out there, the answer is within. We are at the edge of a massive spiritual realization and George's words are so incredibly NOW. The Beatles, their music and their message of higher form of love are an immense and valuable human's heritage.

It's funny how I found these things doing a form of TM before knowing what the world it was. Seeing the universe from space is quite a thing to see the universe and all around it and knowing the place it comes from.

Bet when people heard she loves you they’d have no idea the same band would sound like this

  94. D.... E....

Very deep message. Talks about your soul. It can travel anywhere without your body being moved.

  95. c.... ....

This song took my breath away when it was released - George's voice is so expressively sweet, a reflection of his intelligence. Beyond anything of Paul's. The day the music died..

  96. T.... B....

I thought I had heard all the Beatles songs. I found this song researching about Lao Tzu. I had one of his quotes on my mind, "The further one travels the less one knows," Wow! The Beatles were so versatile and I've read that most of their songs composed of only 4 or 5 chords. The Beatles still hold the title for one of the highest amount of records sold besides Metallica. Great find!

    T.... B....

Please don't compare Metallica to Beatles. Metallica has got a Danish drummer and I'm from Denmark. I hate Metallica and love Beatles. Best regards, Peter Th. from Denmark.

Topic "THE INNER LIGHT." Quote by PAUL MCCARTNEY ~ "George wrote this. Forget the Indian music and listen to the melody. Don't you think it's a beautiful melody? It's really lovely."

    r.... m....

Forget the lyrics and listen to the Indian music.

    r.... m....

George took time out to get some lessons from Ravi Shankar...& you can bet that that's where he got the Ideas for this & a couple of other songs. Ravi was reportedly not all that impressed with George's ability on the Sitar...but to be fair, perfecting that instrument is a life-time's work, & no reflection on George.
