Beatles, The - Julia Lyrics
Half of what I say is meaningless
But I say it just to reach you, Julia
Julia, Julia, oceanchild, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Her hair of floating sky is shimmering, glimmering
In the sun
Julia, Julia, morning moon, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
When I cannot sing my heart
I can only speak my mind, Julia
Julia, sleeping sand, silent cloud, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Hum hum hum hum... calls me
So I sing a song of love for Julia, Julia, Julia

Eternas Gracias John Lennon, amigo de la humanidad, por este himno!
Hiç Türk yok mu?
The harmonies you hear, and there are several, are all John on this.
This song is so short but it feels like it could go on forever
everybody is posting sad comments but all i want to say is croissant in a bowl of ranch
The most hilarious thing about that comment is that you edited it
We named our daughter Julia. After this beautiful song. She is 20 years old.
My name is Julia too
John....Genius from another Planet
beautiful song
Me: Listens to this beautiful song cuz I'm in love with a girl named Julia and I wanna sing this song to her
Realizes this song is about John Lennon's mother..
Oop
from a comment on a site that interprets the song's meaning:
"I think this song is about John explaining his love of Yoko to his dead mother "Half of what I say is meaningless," insinuates he is talking to a dead person and "Ocean child calls me," states that I have found my love
He's essentially introducing Yoko to his mom."
edit: Ocean child is the rough translation of the name Yoko

My mom named me after this song... YAY
Julia Benson Lovely name.
I named my daughter after this song.

I love the girl I like music taste!!
I think the Beatles were so great because they understood that a great melody and sometimes simplicity are all you need to have wonderful songs. Not saying they didn't make more complex music but man...their melodies on 2 minutes songs!
Kalil G. anyone?
My dad used to be a deep Beatles lover, he named me Julia after this song. He also was a musician and he used to play and sing it to me.
He passed away few months ago and now this song gives me so much love and so much pain as well.
I'm sorry. There's nothing anyone can say that hasn't been said, but I think John would say that death is just an opening to the next step, and is anything but dying, as people thing of death. Good luck.
@John Linnon thank you, I just hope father will be proud of me. I keep on doing music on my channel: especially the Beatles he used to love so much.
I didn't know this song even existed until I was told about it in dream. Thank you Father for all the Julias out there!
John wanted to bone his mom
😂😂😂
That's a real mature comment. Does it make you feel superior, somehow?
@John Linnon I'm not kidding. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-SvITEN92i8
My name is Julia
Think of all the life John could have had, all the music he could have made, all the moments he could have found peace and happiness and one man took that all away from him.
RIP John, I love you forever.
Man if you can sing and play this song on guitar, you can literally make any girl wet.
Таинственный гений Джон
Brings Tears To My Eyes, Knowing That He Is With His Mother, Now, ( I Only Hope!)😢
Had to cry while listening to this beauty.
Loved this song forever, can hear it in my head
thank you
This was the first fingerpicking song I fully learned. Love John's work.
My girlfriends name is Julia aight time to learn this song
If one really knows the story behind John and his mom, this song is so Beautiful and Sad at the same time. This and John's "Mother" are just haunting; so Tragic!!!
Lol, I have a crush. Her name is Julia. I’m a simple person
My mom would sing this song to me
English: OcEaN cHiLd
Yoko: ehhhhohhhh ihh ohh
this song is for my best friend whose name is Juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulia
When I can not sing my heart, I can only speak my mind is one of the most beautiful lines in music
If we ever get a Time Tunnel, I want to meet Julia. What a great thing she did for the world. A working class, struggling, young woman.
You can still sing your heart, Johnny. His mother. So poignant.
my name's Julia =) all the Julias and those who like this name, like 👇🏻
A great song!!!!!!
The sound of the blossoming of a spring flower
I know a girl that works in Cordova mall...and I want to know her more 😘
@David B OK? And if I do is that how I get laid? Or do I play coy?
@Mark Barlow It's not all about your organs or your testosterone, either. Play like a grown-up and a mature man. Run the same questions past your mother, if you had one.
@David B ok. Lol
All he said was he wants to get to know this girl. Big deal. I don't sense any ego. Go for it, Mark- we need more romance in a dying world.
@John Linnon Romance, yes. Vulgar and crude juvenile testosterone, no. Look at his posts. He went immediately to "how I get laid" (just as I sussed him out, accurately).
NO! Your grandmothers would never have put up with such a cretin.
This is my music my name is julia
A sweet beautiful song about his mother that he didn't know too well. That's genius.
Rest In Peace John and Julia Lennon.
Only Beatles song that make me cry, this is beautiful.
I love my wife and my mother.
What else is new?
The price of tea in China?
Dirt?
julia era a mae de john lennon
We are all speaking English on this listing, except you, apparently.
This sounds like maybe early Floyd.
Is it just me or does the start sound similar to dear prudence?
It's just you. Like a total dumb-a.
@David B
Mate, why be a dick about it?
Yes, you are right. Donovan taught John Lennon some finger picking patterns on guitar in India and John used them to write a few songs. Another one is "Look at Me" which which ended up on the Plastic Ono Band album.
Everytime I play this I think of falling in love with someone as well my mum who passed away a few years ago. it’s weird because everytime the the person I fall in love with would be motherly like my mom. maybe this is how John Lennon felt
Who could give this song a thumbs down?
Sociopaths. Psychopaths. Plus, millions of other Deltas, Losers, and just plain musically illiterate, marginally-educated, and disgusting sub-humans.
@David B Agreed
This was john’s memorial for his mother
I wish my name was Julia :(
Rest in peace John.
Hurts more today than any other day..
39 years already..
Half of what I say is meaningless, but I say it just to reach you, Julia...
I loved the lyrics of John's songs.. They could be so personal, get real heavy, then he'd throw in nonsense words.. brilliant how he put words together.
For those who don’t know the backstory, Lennon’s mother was only a sporadic part of his life once his father left the family when John was an infant. The two got closer in Lennon’s teenage years, but that ended abruptly in 1958 when Julia, while crossing a street, was hit by a car and killed.
The Beatles rarely referenced their personal lives, at least directly, in song in their early years. But by the time The White Album rolled around in 1968, all subjects were game, as Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote oodles of material (with George Harrison and, on one song, Ringo Starr also contributing), so much so that a double-album was deemed necessary to contain it all. In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine, Lennon explained that the trip to India provided ample opportunity for songwriting, and “Julia” was a byproduct of that.
“’Julia’ was my my mother,” he said. “But it was sort of a combination of Yoko and my mother blended into one. That was written in India. And all the stuff on the White Album was written in India while we were supposedly giving money to Maharishi, which we never did. We got our mantra, we sat in the mountains eating lousy vegetarian food and writing all those songs. We wrote tons of songs in India.”
Lennon is the only Beatle to perform on the track, solo efforts having become commonplace within the Fab 4 around this time. Using a finger-picking style he learned from Donovan while in India, Lennon plays delicate arpeggios around his fragile yet somehow soothing vocal melody. There is an undeniable loneliness evident in his voice, even amidst the double-tracking that Lennon preferred.
He borrowed some of the lines from the poem “Sand And Foam” by Kahlil Gibran, including the opening couplet: “Half of what I say is meaningless/ But I say it just to reach you.” It must have been strange for fans to hear the leader of the biggest band in the world co-opting a line that evokes ineffectuality, but Lennon was always about upending expectations. The bulk of the lyric consists of poetic imagery that speaks of beauty and distance: “Silent cloud”; “Morning moon”; “Her hair of floating sky.”
Lennon’s contention that he intermingled the memories of his mother with his then-current emotions for his wife Yoko is hard to hear in the finished product. What you do hear is the combination of mantra-like calm and profound yearning he conjures each time he sings his mother’s name. About two years later, with The Beatles in his rear view mirror, he recorded “Mother”, a harrowing excavation of his deep-seated feelings of abandonment concerning his parents. But “Julia” is a “song of love”, and, regardless of where that love was directed precisely, nobody did those kinds of songs better than this man and this group.
beautifully written and explained. thank you
great album GREAT
My father dedicated this song to me for my graduations <3 love you, dad.
Julia is someone who doesn't get out of my mind, she's so close but so distance, the world play with us
Ugh I never knew they made a song for me I'm flattered 🙃
"half of what i say is meaningless, but i say it just to reach you" is maybe my favorite line of any song. so real.
Mine too, another one I love is "When I cannot sing my heart, I can only speak my mind"
My name is Julia 😍😍

To his mother hit and killed by a car when John was young.
I love this song 💞💞
I love my name 💕
masterpiece
Started out being about his mom... ended up being about Yoko .
teddibearsworld possibly as how he felt with the pain of loss they became one in the same
The beatles in my humble opinion is or was the most creative group in history. They change the vision of music. I know that the americans felt ofended somehow because they have the king of rock. Elvis. And he was exelent. But as times goes bye new things and new forms of espresing rock came along. I remember the british invation. They have theyr way to play. Not only rock and roll but classic music. For example in mi opinion i love ccr the way they play that rock is unmistakable. Any way. I was in cuba and for been a hippy. Not only went to prison. But the comunist regime. Trow me out
I love how this transitions beautifully from I Will to this.
Half of what I say is meaningless
But I say it just to reach you, Julia
Julia, Julia, ocean child, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Julia, seashell eyes, windy smile, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Her hair of floating sky is shimmering, glimmering
In the sun
Julia, Julia, morning moon, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
When I cannot sing my heart
I can only speak my mind, Julia
Julia, sleeping sand, silent cloud, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Hum, hum, hum, calls me
So I sing a song of love for Julia, Julia, Julia
This song make me so happy
Hi guys
My name is.... julia
My name is Julia so I think I’m pretty lucky!
See You Space Cowboy
My grandmother’s name is Julia, she passed away a year before i was born, I dedicate this song to you. My beautiful grandma..
Whenever the line "when I cannot sing my heart" comes, it hits emotionally for me. Most likely because of his pause til the next line
Such a poignant song. The progression in the chorus is brilliant. It's scary how moving this is.
1:00 Cuando escuchas esta parte te das cuenta de la magia de la canción
Just broke up with my girlfriend Julia....
