I've just found this band... and this song. My son is called Isaac. It's been a good while since music had such a profound effect. Amazing.

No wonder the poor little Isaac chap looks afraid and alone if he is told he has to earn his dads love rather receive it unconditionally. Reassurances come a little late and sound hollow as he keeps repeating them - lacking sincerity.

From Ishmael's point of view -he was loved by mother but not father and knows full well that "a father's love must be earned"; he worships the ground Issac walks upon because Issac is the promised son Abraham loves; Ishmael giving "all his love" to Issac and loving him like his brother (what he is) is a bold stand against the prejudices of their parents, whose histories before the two were born caused favoritism, hatred, and seperation -things only spiritual brotherly love could overcome.
Ishmael understands the fear and betrayal Issac feels as their father prepares to sacrifice him, as he felt the same when Abraham cast him and Hagar off.

Growing up, no matter what I did, my father never did love me. Even if he did, he didn't show.
I grew up watching him and mother fight most of the time. It's so hard sometimes, that I think nothing can satisfy him. No matter what I do, nothing will make him happy.
I'm currently studying in medical school and yet he thinks highly of my cousins who've started earning better and are more successful even though they're elder than me.

love this song, it makes me cry because of my son Isaac. We was told we would find it hard to have children, then blessed with 3 beautiful kids in 5 years. My 1st sons name is Isaac. And i can relate to the meaning of this song hence why my boy is called Isaac.

discovered this band completely by accident and so happy I did!

It is about Abraham's aborted sacrifice of Isaac. From Isaac's friend's viewpoint. Isaac's life fell apart at the realization that his Father would actually kill him for religion. Mother's love is a given, Father's life not so much. Friend is offering his love as Isaac must feel pretty shit that his messianic Father would butcher him for religion. Would be a good metaphor for suicide bombings and child abuse by parents.

Actually Isaac was willing to let himself be sacrificed and continued to be faithful even after Abraham didn’t have to do it. That’s why the covenant was passed to Isaac after Abraham died because he proved faithful.

D Dendo there was 2 brothers. Isaac and Ishmael but Isaac was the only one birthed from Sarah. Jewish record says that Isaac was about 25 when it happened

And you miss the point of the story since God - the "religion" - didn't let it happen, didn't want it to happen, didn't see the sacrifice as an end in itself. But just as the song exemplifies, it asks of the person to give all of their love to someone, in this case God. You're too shortsighted when you see it as kids being abused by parents, even though that's a noble concern of yours.

Actually Abraham didn't want to kill his son for it was his first son and he loved him very much. But God commanded it and he was heartbroken. So he took his son to the altar and told him that he was to be sacrificed to the lord. Isaac didn't object or complain he accepted it and laid down on the altar. Then an angel appeared to Abraham and told him not to do it that it was a test of his faith and loyalty to god. The angel showed him that a ram had caught it's horns in a bush and that he was to replace his son isaac with the ram. Abraham was overjoyed that his son didn't have to die. Abraham isnt just some heartless and blood thirsty savage he was a christian who was very devoted to his lord and would do anything for him even if it meant sacrificing his first son.

This year at Glastonbury, when they finished this song with that line "I'm gonna give all my love to you", the crowd were singing it, and kept singing, the band stopped and we all carried on. It was such a magical moment, everyone there, the band included, just looked so happy.

When Avraham was tested, it was because he loved his son to this level and G-d wanted Avraham to prove his faith by being willing to give up that which he held most precious, his son. Once the Lord saw this was so, he gave Avraham a way out, proving His love for Avraham and Isaac.

Can someone please give me the meaning of this song? I'm pretty sure Isaac is the biblical Isaac, what confuses me is who is the person speaking to him in the song.

@Ashly Nicole In my opinion, this song is about the expectations society places upon fathers in the way that they should interact with their sons and what they should expect from them. The biblical metaphor in the song underscores this, if you remember the story. Abraham must prove his love for God by murdering Isaac, and this set of expectations is passed down to him. He must "learn" how to love his son Isaac, implying that Isaac must prove himself and simply being his son is not enough to warrant love. Thus the line about Isaac's mother "needing not learn" how to love her son. :)
