Bauhaus - Mask Lyrics
I'm lost!
The man of shadows thinks in clay
Dreamed trapped thoughts of suffocation days
He's seen in iron environments
From the growth underneath the closed mouth
You'll catch if you listen
Rack-trapped cubist vowels
From a dummy head expression
From a dummy head expression
The transformation is invested
With the mysterious and the shameful
While the thing I am becomes something else
The shadow is cast

German Expressionism is a point of reference here, of course, but Peter as the re-animating "creature" also reminds me of Lucio Fulci's horror flicks

Não consigo parar de ver esse vídeo.
My greatest musical experience: BAUHAUS.
When you wear that headdress to Stop and Shop....and nobody pays attention.
It's amazing that no one has sounded anything even remotely like this before or since.
Ryan Taylor Ryan Taylor The closest thing that does it for me is Post-rock group, Silver Mt. Zion’s “Mountains Made of Steam,” and it’s still not even close.
1:25 is that James Charles???
i fucking screamed
why does it actually look like him

So fucking awesome!!
big composer, when nobody dreamed to produce this sound
Literally lost my virginity to this one. I choreographed it that way, such a dork. But I stand by my musical accompaniment choice to this day. ☺️🏆🎀💁🏼♀️💐
@ponponvinsky lmao
ITS VERY BEATIFULL SONG,.....
@ponponvinsky HAHAHAHAH
I never had a song, these songs always remind me of my Darken room.. foil on Windows posters covering every inch of space.. and my walk men.. being kid napped to some family trip.. staring into the desert.. the vast emptiness and death.. Peace Humans.. and at least it wasn't Depeche Mode.. hahaha
NPB; Good for you!

Did Daniel spit into Peter's mouth? That's hot!
@Niklas Oxenstierna Cool. If you indulge her with the spitting kink, then she's a lucky gal. Unlike me. I've only met one dude who did that for me without making me feel like a creep. Unfortunately, he moved very far away. :-(
@Niklas Oxenstierna Unfortunately, I'm surrounded by beta cucks and simps, lol. Atlanta's full of them. They were imported from the West coast.
1:51 Just gonna leave this timestamp for quick reference.
Fark! I'm impressed. Would be interesting to meet you.
Beautiful man Beautiful music
I first saw this on a local cable show that played mostly post-punk and other hard to find music videos in the early 80's. I became an instant fan. The show's name was 'Soundproof' and it ran for a good 3 years. It literally changed my life. I wish I had taped it.
An astounding band.
I just have to say that I completely agree with the Arkive's mention of Weimar-era expressionist cinema in the description to this video. I first saw this circa 1993 on the "Shadow of Light" VHS, and the likes of Murnau, Wiene plus perhaps Lang immediately leapt to mind. I am sure that this was absolutely intentional on the group's part. I further concur with the statement that this song and the images which accompany it sum up Bauhaus in four minutes. Beggar's were one of the best labels of the eighties. I always found it a little bit of a shame that they chose not to support the still burgeoning (if, in some cases, derivative) UK "goth" scene and related acts in the early to mind 1990s. Instead, they opted to tell bands things such as "we might have been interested ten years ago". Popular music moves on, of course, but I think that they missed a trick there. Bands like Rosetta Stone were playing to capacity club crowds at the time, despite the music press completely ignoring them. With a push and the support of a decent label like Beggar's, it could have gone a lot further.
Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?
Try listening to this in front of your parents without 🎧
My mom would not bat an eye. I used to listen to the RHPS soundtrack in the morning while getting ready for school!
My father did.
I played it to my sister on a Bauhaus videos VHS tape... she told me I like evil music 🖤🕸🕷🦇👍
Did that with Klaus Nomi, is it still valid?
My mum is the reason I know of Bauhaus.
The gothiest gothiness that was ever gothed. If you are semi-goth, you will pretend to like it when someone plays it for you. If you are deep goth, you will say it is your favorite, but it is not really. It is gothier than Bela or All We Wanted was Everything on youtube featuring Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth. You are the gothest goth only if you played this over and over and over when you were a kid.
This and Stigmata Martyr - I wore them both out
Yep. Goth Lifetime Achievement Award Winner here, I guess. 🤷🏼♀️🏆☺️
Agree with Jose! Maybe hollow hills or silent hedges are even gothier, in Le Rose Bonbon live 1981 version. That crappy recording is very goth
Yeah I got me one of them "goth asses" you all probably been reading about in the paper lately, oh yeah.
This video reminds of the strange footage from the top15
Excitante!
Ótima música. Bauhaus é maravilhoso.
If you love this hollow hills and try spy in the cab .....trust me
Bauhaus' darkest song of all with a little bit of Led Zeppelin "Battle of Evermore" acoustic guitar at the end to lighten the proceedings. Disturbing!
awesome song!!
One of the best.
"La transformación es investida
Con el misterioso y el avergonzado
Mientras que la cosa que soy se convierte en algo mas
Parte personaje Parte sensación
La sombra se proyecta "
Hola. Nunca había puesto interés en traducir la última estrofa de Mask. Es una traducción muy linda, poética hasta cierto punto. Gracias :)
Oh my God, was that supposed to be a crematorium?
The description claims that it was filmed in an abandoned shoe factory, but you could be right.....
It was an old mill of some sort. Went there a couple of times after the filming. All the props were still there, along with the shadow on the wall.
There were some bubblemen painted on one wall and on another a mock up of The Mask album cover.
Andrew, thank you very much for providing this information. I assume that it was filmed in Bauhaus' home town of Northampton? It's interesting to note, however, that it was a mill and not an abandoned shoe factory!
Albrecht Factory and mill are used interchangeably in many instances. The mill could have housed a shoe manufactory in which case you could either call it a shoe mill or shoe factory. Since Northampton’s preeminent industry was shoe manufacturing, I trust both the description of the video and Andrew’s commentary. They are not contradictory.
the part at 02:40 is so freaking awesome.
Bauhaus = Religion
Bauhaus is best Religion.
@charles jurgus I love preoccupying my senses!
@charles jurgus Well, that's just your opinion
