Bassey, Shirley - The Fool On The Hill Lyrics

Day after day alone on the hill
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still
But nobody wants to know him
They can see that he's just a fool
And he never gives an answer
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning around

Well on his way his head in a cloud
The man of a thousand voices talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him
Or the sound he appears to make
And he never seems to notice
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning around

And nobody seems to like him
They can tell what he wants to do
And he never shows his feelings
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning around

Round and round and round
He never listens to them
He knows that they're the fools
The don't like him
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning around

  5. Chang.

    Flat stationary Earth yo!😎

  6. colsome miah

Always sophisticated: this profoundly esoteric , song is given Shirley's trademark italics, which underscore the poignant sagacity of the lone contemplative "fool", who being solitary, has delved into the intrinsic nature of life: who sees it as it is, but the masses go blithely about their hedonistic pleasures, not caring to know him, because after all, he's only a fool.

  7. Denis da silva lobato

Day after day, alone on the hill,
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still.
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he's just a fool.
And he never gives an answer .....

But the fool on the hill,
    Sees the sun going down.
And the eyes in his head,
    See the world spinning around.

Well on his way, his head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand voices, talking perfectly loud.
    But nobody ever hears him,
Or the sound he appears to make.
And he never seems to notice .....

But the fool on the hill,

But the fool on the hill,
    Sees the sun going down.
And the eyes in his head,
    See the world spinning around.

  25. wildfire5610

Too upbeat for my liking. It seems to have lost the lonely, reflective, melancholy quality of the original

    Dave Gott

That is what makes it ironic ....like when they played Steve forberts romeos tune I. Knock around guys movie

    Paul Peterson

    Clueless table for one!!!

  26. Manfred Georg Ottinger

I love SHIRLEY BASSEY’S version of THE FOOL ON THE HILL by The Beatles! It's such a classy, wonderful, heartfelt, jazzy rendition of this Beatles classic. The “punches” and instrumentation, in general, are all great. (I love the bass line and drums in particular.) My one suggestion is that perhaps she should have included a jazzed up version of the "crazy" recorder solo in the middle. That would have been spectacular. But other than that, "it's all good." Somebody posted a comment on YOUTUBE, which I agree with wholeheartedly, in her description of SHIRLEY BASSEY. She says, (and I take the liberty of quoting), “Amazing lively style – a great lady. You younger listeners just listen to her sing ‘Goldfinger’, then you might ‘GET’ her voice. To critique ANYTHING from another time, you have to see through the eyes and mood of the time.” Words of wisdom!

    Annette Stockett

Actually this is a Sergio Mendes original song, not the Beatles.

    Walter Vazquez

@Annette Stockett ? Paul McCartney wrote the song

  27. Cesar Capanegra

  28. vivi valderr

    excelente!!!!

She has such an amazing lively style - a great lady. You younger listeners, just listen to her sing "Goldfinger", then you might "get" her voice. To critique anything from another time you have to see through the eyes and mood of the time.

Shirley Bassey sings this song beautifully. This song was originally by "The Beatles". It's been years since I've heard it, listening to it today interest me to know who or what this song was about, The history was worth looking into.

  31. Ana Silva
