Bassey, Shirley - On A Clear Day You Can See Forever Lyrics

On a clear day, rise and look around you
And you'll see who you are
On a clear day how it will astound you
That the glow of your being outshines every star

You'll feel part of ev'ry mountain, sea, and shore
You can hear from far and near a world you've never heard before

And on a clear day, on that clear day
You can see forever and ever more

You can hear from far and near a world you've never heard before

And on that clear day, on that clear day
You can see forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and evermore!

She *owns* this song. In fact she owns just about anything she ever sang. And by 'own' I don't refer to anything legal or financial. I mean she *owns* a song in the most visceral way possible. Thank you Shirley!

  4. J.... F....

Great arrangement. Super voicing. Top pros all !. Of course , unsung. Keep Music live !.

  5. T.... ....

Brings a cannon to a gun fight!

  6. C.... P....

That is one gorgeous Welsh/Nigerian, oh before I forget, she's one helluva singer too. 😱

    C.... P....

Check out this great song from Shirley:  History Repeating - Shirley Bassey (1998 Viva Diva TV Special).   This song was included in the Movie, 'There's Something About Mary'- Can you imagine any other singer of her generation singing like this and the way she moves...

    C.... P....

Shirley Bassey Music and Vids: 'History Repeating' yes I saw the video many times, great song and music video, I love watching her performances. 🎼

  7. L.... T....

    An absolutely beautiful song

  8. T.... M....

Who can sing like this? Nobody but her. Seulement Diva en le monde. Cest vrai.

  9. R.... M....

The camera men were not very good. A front shot only would have been better, to get the greatness of her singing.

  10. J.... ....

That audience was looking like they were waiting for their number to be called at the DMV. WTF? This was/is and forever will be... AMAZING!!!

  11. D.... ....

I never understood why this song was released in the US during the time of the UK release. Another song was substituted on the album for this. Who made these decisions?

  12. D.... F....

Oh Shirley you never fail this is exactly how this song should be sung a wonderful song well. Performed wonderful xxxxx😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄😊😊😊😊😊⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is not even of this world, magnificent. Dame Shirley.

  22. V.... O....

    An explosion in song!

  23. C.... C....

Oh my what a wonderful, powerful, beautiful voice. Shirley Bassey was incredibly talented. Thanks for posting this.

  24. J.... W....

She's always had such confidence as a performer. Free and powerful. It's not easy, but she makes it look like it is.

  25. K.... S....

I sort of enjoy it but isn't it a bit over the top though?

    K.... S....

I would use the word, Dramatic, but that is a good thing. Shirley has always chosen to sing songs that get to her emotionally, and she expresses it very well in her live performances. But, as always, Shirley can always back it up with some of the greatest vocals to ever hit this planet. Why does she do it? Because she CAN, when most other singers Can't.

    K.... S....

Thanks for your kind reply. Don't get me wrong, I'm a GREAT fan of SB. However, to me her absolute masterpiece is "The Party's Over" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmzfPzSsbDc, where you can hear her alternating between belting and the subtlest "mezza voce" with unmatched mastery. Amazing!
Keep the good work, I love your YouTube channel.

  26. K.... W....

I love Shirley Bassey's stage prescence. Now that's a DIVA.

  27. n.... ....

Wow, she's magnificent. Why are there no more singers like this anymore. Classy and elegant? Only crass and trashy looking singers currently. Nothing compares to these singers from the past, today's singer don't even come close.

  28. J.... T....

when I hear this woman sing I don't even compare her to anybody she's great in her own right she's got my undivided attention.

    J.... T....

    John Thrush amen to that

    J.... T....

To me she is Judy Garland without the clouded, drug addled mind. Shirley is everything Judy Garland could have been.

  29. J.... T....

I think she's um I like a better than Judy Garland

  30. C.... M....

This is sooooo beautiful!!😍👌 the voice!!😚

  31. w.... s....

    meastro knows her every move..

  32. D.... C....

Amazing performance but no one can be the Legendary Barbra with this song !

    D.... C....

There is no question that the artist who has the most well known association with this song is Barbra Streisand, as it was the main title to the movie she was in.  And, her studio recording is wonderful.  But, performing this song or any song LIVE with the most intense emotion, conviction and the ability to blow the roof off the house, stand up and take a bow, the legendary Ms. Shirley Bassey.

    D.... C....

Duo Channel I'm one of the last surviving Bassey fans but please let's not forget, even before the Streisand version there was the inimitable Barbara Harris, who made it famous on Broadway.

  33. S.... C....

Greatest voice only second to the Great Garland!

  40. V.... ....

It's so beautiful i'm in tears.

    V.... ....

    AMAZING

  41. d.... ....

There just are no words... even "great" doesn't describe her. A word hasn't been created yet. She's an indescribable wonder!

  42. P.... W....

Love this standard song! And boy, does Dame Shirley Bassey rips it to shreds!!! But what's with the audience? Were they all sipping on embalming fluid before entering the studio? Look at their emotionless expressions!

    P.... W....

There were so many greats at that time (who now?). I think you were not supposed to show emotion. It was too gauche.

  43. S.... G....

    BEAUTIFUL :D

  44. M.... M....

    Divinal

  45. o.... ....

    Magnificent!

  46. p.... ....

gez what a terrible audience, after a performance like that you'd expect they would react a bit more excited

    p.... ....

Uhmm..maybe at that time...you see that standard performance more often..so many great singers back then...

  47. A.... G....

    What a performance!

  48. B.... S....

In een woord fantastisch Dame Shirley

  49. S.... M....

Wow again ! Got to hear more ! Just thinking of the words to this song as the title and theme came up in conversation and this is the version I found. So glad ! Shirley, you change the world in no small way whether anyone heard this or not, we all felt it !

  50. K.... ....

    I love you

  51. b.... d....

Wow. What control. She saviours every note e.g. onn (a clear day)  How difficult that ending (more) would be for most singers.

  52. s.... ....

    Excellent

  53. K.... N....

I LOVE Shirley Basseys voice. INCREDIBLE. i'm grateful to my parents for introducing me to her when I was a little girl. AMAZING VOICE, STYLE !

  56. l.... ....

I want to see the advert again.:)

  57. l.... ....

oh boy! i usually skip the advert. but I was so confused because it was DSB singing where do I begin. How cool is that! i WOULD BUY ANYTHING THAT COMPANY IS SELLING JUST BECAUSE THEY HAD THE GOOD TASTE TO PUT HER VOICE TO HER PRODUCT!. She is just brilliant on this song, and seemingly so effortless. Beautiful

  58. a.... ....

    Incredible voice!

  59. r.... v....

Well Thorneycroft, we all wait with baited breath because her official site has been promising to make an announcement for weeks now! Let's keep everything crossed, eh! :-)

  60. J.... M....

if Shirley really loved entertaining that much she could do her fans a favour and do another appearance or concert. not being greedy or disrespectful but i just dont get why anyone would work out in the gym every day and be in fantastic physical and vocal condition at 76 and not benefit from that.

  61. J.... M....

i saw barbra doing this as her opening number in cologne this week and what can i say, she never was anywhere near Shirley and her brilliance.

  62. D.... B....

Barbra's great version of this was recorded. She can't match Shirley live as a performer. I've had the privelege of seeing both, and it's no contest. Yes, Barbra is a great singer, and I love her singing. Maybe it was Shirley's best day, I don't know. I was just blown away by Shirley's performance and haven't experienced anything like it since I was a kid.

    D.... B....

D.E.B. B My sentiments exactly. Barbra's recorded version seems to not even match the spiritual high that Shirley's LIVE version has.

    D.... B....

Shirley's voice is deeper and louder than Streisands for sure, but BARBRA'S voice is higher, hypnotic and more textured. Bassey's "hammering" The song into submission with vibrato over-kill. Barbra OWNS the song

    D.... B....

Philip: You say louder, and most people who are unbiased say Shirley Bassey has proper diaphragm technique with a bigger vibrato that allows her voice to technically carry the sound better. Barbra's voice has been weak for many decades, and it's mainly because she refuses to practice. For may years she didn't perform live because she didn't have confidence in her instrument. Then, on one concert she installed special carpeting that would help her voice carry! Pitch: Barbra is a mezzo-seprano, and so is Shirley, at least at this time in her career. Celine Dion or Whitney Houston would be considered Sopranos. Shirley's voice appears lower because of her heavier/darker timber; Barbra has very light timber. Shirley has greater range as she can hit all the notes of a Mezzo Seprano and an Alto. During live concerts no one wants to sit through 2 hours of lulabys. Her fans of course sit through it because she is the great actress who sings, and this song was from her movie by the same name. But, most people want someone who can belt to the rafters, and this is what Shirley has always been able to deliver, but more so because she regularly performs grueling vocal exercises. I've seen both live, and there is no question who is the better live singer. Everything else gets down to voice preferences, and we know where you stand. No problem, but this is Shirley's site.

    D.... B....

@Shirley Bassey Music and Vids WRONG....listen to Barbra in the 60's LIVE VOCALS....blows any woman away. "Down with love"" lover come back" " bothered bewitched bewildered" piece of sky" my coloring book" "cry me a river" just to name a few....

    D.... B....

I was born in the USA and grew up listening to Barbra Streisand, so you don't have to tell me about her voice. I have all the albums you are referring to, and they were in the 60's and early 70's when her natural talented voice was stronger. I never said the lady didn't have a beautiful voice. She did and still does! I have attended both Streisand and Bassey concerts, and my comments addressed to Philip are based on personal experience. Seeing both live, it's just like their 2013 appearance at the Academy Awards. Dame Shirley received a LONG wild standing Ovation to the point they had to cut for a commercial while Ms Streisand received polite applause mainly as a result of her accomplishments. As you mentioned the 60's, here are some Bassey 1960's recordings that will blow anyone away! 'What Now My Love', 'Reach For the Stars', 'What Kind Of Fool Am I', 'Climb Every Mountain', 'I Who Have Nothing', 'As I Love You', 'My Special Dream' 'NOW', and 'Your Love' just to name a few. Amazing vocals! Everything else gets down to ones' preference in artists. I like them both, AND I would never log on to Barbra's site and put her down in any way. I wouldn't do it because I like her music. I am only responding/pushing back to her fans who log on to this site to put Ms. Bassey down by stating their favorite's superiority.

  63. r.... v....

I think after this years Oscars, Miss Streisand would give her right arm to be anywhere close to Miss Bassey's league. The major difference however, is that Bassey loves entertaining, Streisand does it as a favour.

  64. m.... ....

She is much more emotional than Barbra Streisand. In my opnion.

  65. S.... B....

Yes, Shirley Bassey is awesome, and Shirley recorded this song in 1967. No one ever said that this song wasn't tied to Barbra Streisand, but it's stupid to think she has ever been in a better league than Bassey. Shirley can do an awesome cover of Bab's songs, but never, ever, ever would you find Stresisand attempting Goldfinger, or The Living Tree. Everything else gets down to personal taste, and we know where your bias' are. Yep, you known mine as well. But, I'm on Shirley's site!

  66. S.... S....

    Ok then.

  67. S.... B....

Thks, but as mentioned before I am a fan of Streisand and I do watch her clips and I have most of her music. Again, I think her voice is wonderful, but to compare her vocal power to that of Shirley Bassey nowadays is just an unreal comparison even going back to last October. Faithful fans usually refer back to how it was way back when, but right now, she would not attempt that song. Nor, would she attempt 'The Living Tree'. Petite & Pretty - I'm referring to now, not 25+ years ago..thks

  68. S.... S....

The problem is that Barbra's voice changes very often due to not vocalizing.... I saw her live in concert in October 2012 and she was fantastic...Although I do agree that she struggled singing at the oscars I really encourage you to watch " Barbra Streisand On a clear day 2012 MGM"... it starts at around 1:20... listen to the entire song and then tell me if you think she couldn't sing Goldfinger...

  69. S.... B....

Everything else gets down to your own personal taste in music. I for one enjoy both singers very much, but many people just can't like two singers who sing much of the same type of music, even though they sing differently. Don't know why...it's just the case..Regards, Scot

  70. S.... B....

Streisand is a wonderful singer..I've always been a fan! But I'm also glad that you used the 'well used to be able to) sing powerfully. If you saw her at The Oscars, I'm sure you noticed how she struggled for many of the notes to The Way We Were, which by any standards is a very easy song to sing. Bassey can sing a presentable version of any song that Streisand has ever sung, and she has, but Streisand would never attempt 'Goldfinger'. That is the easiest way I can explain the difference.

  71. S.... S....

I get that but to also summarize Barbra's voice as " petite and pretty " is also very incorrect. It's basically what you just said... Bassey can sing in a "mellow fashion" as can Barbra ( well used to be able to ) sing powerfully.. like in A Star is Born.. people listen to ever green or the way we were and think they know what Barbra's voice is and she has sung around 500 songs, which leaves a lot of room for discovering

  72. T.... ....

God I love Dame Shirley! And, it's not just because I'm a gay guy! LOL ;)

  73. S.... B....

sgs92able: In your defense of how Streisand sings, you are making the same generalization about Shirley Bassey. Bassey has the vocal abilities to just stand there with no inflection and no difference in vocal project for low vs high register, but years ago she learned to sing these types of songs with more dramatics. She is able to sing petite & pretty, but her fans love her powerful style during live concerts, and she never disappoints. I've loaded tons of mellow Bassey songs..take a listen.

  74. G.... G....

In the early 80's I was working in a restaurant in Hong Kong and Shirley came in with an old friend who was living there - she was totally delightful and posed happily for pics and after what must have been a few bottles of Crystal or was it Krug (I forget) she graciously sang a few of her biggest hits and brought the place down - it was a memorable evening and DSB such a delight - thanks for all the wonderful memories and dedication to your art!

  75. G.... G....

When growing up as a kid my grandmother was one DSBs biggest fans she would always make me play her LPs on a tinny old stereo and she was call Shirley 'the greatest'. I never quite understood her adoration at that time but I would always pick her up a Shirley album every Christmas and she would put the volume at full blast. Now I totally get what an amazing and charismatic legend she is. My grandmother passed away a while back but 'the greatest' is still belting them out - thank you DSB

  76. S.... S....

It's all about technique.. Shirley goes all out when she really belts.. Veins a popping.. Like Whitney.. Barbra never really tries.. Watch her sing this.. She doesn't put much effort in the belts and it sounds fantastic.. Yes Shirley's voice is deeper but if you think Barbra's voice is "petite and pretty" you haven't listen to enough Barbra... Yes I agree in many songs but her "voice" is huge and if they sang together Barbra would definitely hold her own.. People always underestimate Barbra

  77. S.... B....

ATTENTION: Dame Shirley Bassey will be appearing at the 2013 Academy Awards Show In Hollywood on February 24th. She will perform for the 50th James Bond anniversary celebration! Wonderful News! Bassey is herself celebrating 60 (Diamond) years in Show Business, starting back in 1953.

We all are impatiently awaiting for you to record your next CD....hope hope hope, and maybe you will decide to tour the world to celebrate with all your fans...Regards, Scot

  79. s.... ....

    Streisand could take some notes.

  80. T.... W....

    Love it!!

  81. S.... B....

You are right Ugonna! I don't know why I get sucked in every time with people like this. It's done...thks!

  82. S.... B....

There are plenty of vocalists in the top 10, but they way they sing usually is based on their influences and how they grew up. Bassey grew up in poverty, which can influence the tigress in her in the way she sings. Streisand grew up in a middle class family, but different influences. They sing differently. Aretha Franklin has one of the greatest voices of all time, but she sings differently. Trying to compare or negatively compare the top eschelon of vocalists will get you no where.

  83. S.... B....

Maybe so, but you still feel the need to come to Shirley's website and negatively compare her...sweety. We've heard you, and don't agree with you, darlin, so just move on to someone else's website and negatively compare that vocalist with Streisand.

  84. S.... B....

Here is the link to 'He Was Beautiful: Shirley Bassey - He Was Beautiful / Almost Like Being In Love (Medley) / Inteview

  85. S.... B....

It's the voice that I've always contended Streisand has, 'petite and pretty'. Bassey can do petite and pretty if she wishes, and one example is 'He Was Beautiful'. The difference is that Bassey's petite and pretty has a richer sound to it. On the other hand, Streisand couldn't sing 'Goldfinger' or 'The Living Tree' if she tried. I like both singers for different reasons. But, technically, Shirley Bassey has the more powerful voice. Everything else gets down to your own taste in singers.

  86. A.... O....

Shirley Bassy is a belter and I love it. Enjoy your quartet, give me a great big band any day!

  87. S.... B....

What we do know is that Shirley is to this date the largest selling female artist from the UK, and you can't do that by being a 'One Trick Poney.' An unbiased listen to Shirley's many recordings will see that she can sing both soft and/or belt as she chooses. True Belters find it difficult to change up...Minnelli, Merman, Turner, Holiday, Etheridge, Bonnie Tyler, Pattie LaBelle. Anyone who can't see the difference between Bassey's fluid vocals vs these ladies needs to get their ears checked.

  88. 2.... ....

Agreed...impressive set of pipes but unfortunately she ultimately remained a one-trick pony....whether because of her own desires or being badly managed, we'll never know...

  89. S.... B....

If you really liked Bassey, then you would know that she can sing a sensitive song with the best of them, and I have uploaded many clips that show it. But, On A Clear Day is a Big Belter Ballad, and Shirley has the pipes that really does this song justice. The difference between Shirley and most other singers is that she is capable of singing exactly how she wants, but it is her big belter style that her fans enjoy the most, and after 60 years in the business she still doesn't disappoint.

  90. A.... ....

A very powerful, influential performance. I felt like I've just heard a song of the century. I felt my soul is cleaned and saved.

  91. C.... A....

    Outstanding!

    She was better than Barbara!
