Yes, this song is completely based on a VERY old Serbian song called "Mislio sam da je život" by Serbian composer and writer Dragutin B. Ilić (1910-1933). The original version is a tragic song about a young Serbian man who spent his life in vain pursuits, drinking wine in the Kafanas and chasing women. It is a "confession" of sorts to his mother as he was dying of tuberculosis. It was a famous song long ago, so it's quite possible that a young, Greek, future composer heard it when he was little :) But this is how things go in the Balkans. Maybe the melody is even OLDER than BOTH composers! Maybe it can be traced back to even older times! But as of yet, I don't know of any such evidence...

+ Jimmy Hellas The Serbian composer of this tune died was Dragutin B. Ilic (1910-1933). He composed it when Theodorakis was probably a small child. Not only is the melody the same, but the original song is about a young man dying of tuberculosis and lamenting his wasted youth. This theme of "wasted youth" is the same in Shirley Bassey's version. And even in Theodorakis' version is about a young man dying in a senseless manner. Quite coincidental?
