Bassey, Shirley - It Must Be Him Lyrics

I tell myself "What's done is done"
I tell myself "Don't be a fool
Play the field, have a lot of fun
It's easy when you play it cool"
I tell myself "Don't be a chump
Who cares, let him stay away"
That's when the phone rings, and I jump
And as I grab the phone I pray
"Let it please be him
Oh dear God it must be him
It must be him, or I shall die
I shall die"
After a while I'm myself again
I pick the pieces off the floor
I put my heart on the shelf again
He'll never hurt me anymore
I'm not a puppet on a string
I'll find somebody new someday
That's when the phone begins to ring
And once again I start to pray
"Let it please be him
Oh dear God it must be him
It must be him, or I shall die
I shall die
Oh, hello, hello
My dear God, it must be him
But it's not him, and then I die
Again I die
Oh, hello, hello
My dear God, it must be him
But it's not him, and then I die
Again I die
I shall die"

Vikki Carr owns this song... Period!

  24. L.... B....

This is the worst song Im have ever heard her sing.

  25. M.... S....

I didn't know who she was until I lived in England in 1977; a music producer told me the States has Streisand & the UK has Shirley Bassey......it's all controlled.

    M.... S....

Margret Sims What? Not sure what you mean by controlled. There were many great female Vocalists in the USA and England . How about Cecelia Black and LuLu, also well known in the US, but from England.
GoldFinger, one of Shirley’s huge hits from the 60’s Movie. Not sure how you
Missed that, unless you never heard music until The 70’s. If anything, the excuse for music in the 21st Century, is in fact, the controlled.

  29. c.... ....

I will take Vikki's version. This woman is trying too hard to imitate vikki.

  30. J.... V....

Don’t know who this is, but it is not Shirley Bassey!!!

  31. K.... G....

    Love Shirley & Vicki's version

  32. D.... K....

Good cover. Vikki Carr has the better version.

  33. D.... J....

Vikki Carr and then Dame Shirley. Goose pimples all the way.

  34. b.... v....

  35. L.... W....

Best song for Shirley just loveit

  36. M.... D....

Shirley never disappoints, it seems I've listened to her all my life. Her diction and clarity is perfect. I was fortunate to see her many years ago in concert, a performance I will never forget.

  37. S.... H....

shirley bassey is the greatest female singer ever fantastic voice love all her songs 😀

  38. J.... A....

As much as I love Miss Shirley Bassey (I even have one of her albums) this is Vickii Carr's song.  Vicki sounds as though she living the song while Shirley sounds like she is performing the song.  Also Vicki's voice resonates better on this song.

  39. J.... B....

No, this is not her song!!!
First is Vikky Carr , but listen to Timi Yuro then!

  40. G.... D....

Super Star Shirley. What a massive talent and beauty!! The power and passion she puts into this song is expressing the true meaning of the song.

  41. M.... S....

    She is just beyond phenomenal!

UNA VOZ IRREPETIBLE EN UNA INMORTAL CANCIÓN

  47. j.... ....

My grandmother used to say one should never 'gild the lily' and I'm afraid Miss Bassey is somewhat guilty of that in this instance. A great singer undoubtedly but on this one: Vikki Carr takes the crown.

  50. S.... P....

i love shirley but theres no passion just shouting

    S.... P....

    Shouting!!! you deaf twat

  51. K.... B....

For this song Carr and Bassey have a very similar vocal quality. Bassey's dramatic, over-the-top vibrato make the difference, but Carr's version is easier to take. Both singers at their peak in the 80's.

    K.... B....

+Kurt Burgess For all Shirley Bassey's super-studded star status, Vikki Carr's version of this song was the bigger hit, and for good reasons. Vikki Carr almost stood back and let the song shine for itself. Shirley Bassey suffocated it with her diva dramatics. You're absolutely right. Bassey's version is hard to take. Anyway, great melody but the lyrics are so tragic/comic I wonder if Gilbert Becaud was having a laugh when he wrote it.

    K.... B....

True. I think Bassey realized it could work for her, liked the song, but never expected a chart buster. Bassey's vibrato could be controlled to her discretion. Unlike Carr, she was easily parodied for her dramatics, too.

    K.... B....

Kurt Burgess I think Shirley Bassey has the better vocal quality, but the accompanying orchestration of Vikki Carr is more harmonic. They are both great artists with the one not really being better than the other. The are just 'different'. Everybody to his taste.

    K.... B....

    Great comment, couldn't agree more.

    K.... B....

My comment was directed to Kurt, thank you.

  52. H.... v....

The performance of "It must be him"of Vikky Carr is much more better than the performance of Shirley Bassey!

    H.... v....

    +Henk van Gils Even betterer.

Grace remember; When people make mistakes in your language, it probably means they speak at least one other language ;-)

    H.... v....

    So true !!!

    H.... v....

"Much more better"? That isn't even English.

  53. h.... q....

    another great song

  54. L.... S....

It is too bad how few people know of this rendition of the song. Though Ms. Vicki Carr was stupendous at it, there seems to be a clarity and class to the voice of Dame Shirley Bassey that gives the song a little extra beauty.

  55. P.... M....

She is so unique! I listen to her since I was 12 years old!

  61. J.... J....

Cierto Vikki Carr y Shirley Bassey hacen las mejores interpretaciones de esta canción y
hasta un parecido en timbre de voz..Grandisimas las dos.

i personally like this song because it brings back so many memories of the good old days

  72. A.... S....

A arte de cantar com as palavras ditas com paixão,empenho e sentidas.
    Shirley é virtuosa !!!!!
    Lindíssima.

  73. w.... ....

This one of the first radio hits.
I'm 58 years now and I grew with this radio hit.
We are the first generation born with the music on the radio.
Shirley Bassey and her college don't born in the radio music,
but they make the beginning of the modern radio music now

  74. g.... m....

It's definetly the Dame in her early days!

  75. b.... ....

So love you Shirley!! but I think this is Vikki Carr? Your stunning as ever though.

  76. y.... ....

Great song with sad lyrics and Dame Shirley shown her sorrow through her vocal power and make us weep!! This is magic. Shirley is still top of her performance after 50 years in show business.

  77. B.... G....

even though their vocals are similar, i like vikki carr's version better.

  78. p.... ....

This is NOT the version I remember played on Radio 390 in the 60's. The version I remember could have been interchanged with Vicki Carr's voice. .both versions are great. But i think I prefer Vicki's version. Gosh if I had a woman that wanted me that much, I wouldn't leave home!!!!! KRS

  79. j.... ....

@123KMus....yes, much as I love the Bassey, I totally agree with you: this just doesn't seem to have the truth and vulnerability that Vikki's has. Just my opinion, folks, so don't lose sleep over it...lol x

  80. b.... v....

fabulosa........pero vikki carr esta cancion la borda .como NADIE........VIVA VIKKI CARR....Y VIVA SHIRLEY BASSEY.....

  81. f.... ....

Beautiful and fantastic version. Clicked for 38 stars.

  82. f.... ....

The arrangement does not help. Posh restroom music should not accompany an epic.

  83. d.... ....

no no! this is Vikki's song!
sounds like Shirley is reading the song... :S
great voice or not.. I'm going back to Mrs Carr ;)

  84. G.... A....

Interesting interpretation of the song.. I also heard the Vicki Carr version and I love both equally.. Both of them are powerful singers.. I love them both. At 2:12 , the picture looks more like Nancy Pelosi instead of Shirley Bassey , so that's probably the only thing that may need editing in the video..

  85. M.... T....

he'll never hurt me any more

  86. h.... ....

@Rosannasfriend I totally disagree, although I'm biased. Bassey here sounds like she is on 'auto-pilot' and going through the motions (no e!) singing this song that belongs, quite rightly, to Ms Carr.

  87. L.... ....

    @Baskerville22 I agree.
I am a Shirley Bassey fan, but Vikki Carr is THE version of this song.

  88. i.... ....

Fab, but im voting for Vikki Carr.

  89. C.... W....

    well done

  90. M.... ....

I love this song! The emotion she displays throughout the song is extraordinary and as you listen to the song you can sense the outbursts of emotion that she is going through as she hopes that the person on the other end of the phone is her guy only to find out that it's not him. Great song from start to finish.
