The older artists such Shirley, Vikki Carr, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin are GREAT because they had to keep their voices strong by performing grueling vocal exercises. In other words, they put in the work! They did not rely on 'AutoTune' electronic devices that many younger singers do today to enhance their voices and to keep them on key. I saw a recent interview with Aretha Franklin and the person asked her what she thought of AutoTune. Her response was, 'What's that?' Yes, with the older artists, you got the Real Thing!

Aretha used pitch correction in her last album and artists like Beyonce and Mariah have showed excellent vocals for years

Yeah but I'm guessing at least 50% of her fans do not own computers and if they do probably don't know how to use youtube and all that. Looking outside of the box we seems to judge peoples success by the youtube hits they get these days . . like many times people on the news would so oh lady gaga's bad romance got 10,000,000 hits in 2 days. . 140 million records :O . shiiiiiteeee.

@sas9023055 - I am also finding that many Europeans in general tend to not give their artists the positive feedback by hitting the 'Like' button after seeing a great performance. Lady Gaga gets millions of views and thousands of 'Likes' - and here Shirley has received 20 Likes from such a great performance. Even though it is a cover, it is still a great performance. The world seems to be upside down.

It's little to do with being European and more to do with age, not as many younger people follow Shirley as the follow GaGa

@Maekchuu - I am from the USA, and Shirley is one of my favorite vocalists of all time, as you can tell from all her Vids I have uploaded! Your comment about never forgetting the greats is right on. Shirley is such a dilema for me, as she is the top selling female artist of all time in the UK with over 140 Million records sold world wide, and yet the number of views she gets are so few compared to other artists, including her counterpart artists of the same generation. A real dilema for me.

Indeed! She is particularly powerful for me as her race mirrors mine, except my mother is Welsh where I think her's is English. Nevertheless what a prolific career, 58 years! Shucks, I have no doubt in my mind that she is one of the best UK Artists. It actually saddens me a tad, to know that todays 'cartoon' meaningless music is swamping classics like these :( . @Maekchuu - Great comments! Yes, Shirley is so expressive when she sings, but like you say, it's not a bad thing...it just makes her unique. And, what people tend to forget is that she can back up her expressiveness with a powerful rich voice. Shirley always wanted to go into acting, but when she started in show business, those opportunities weren't very good for artists of mixed race. So, Shirley expresses her acting through her singing. 58+ years in the music industry, and counting...

I haven't really heard any of Shirley Bassey, until today. For me her voice is enriched with maturity and sophistication. love it. She believes every word she says, people have said she acts more than she sings, but she's convincing and it's not merely 'pretending' rather expressing with her vocals and expression.
