Bassey, Shirley - How Insensitive Lyrics

How insensitive I must have seemed
When she told me that she loved me
How unmoved and cold I must have seemed
When she told me so sincerely

Why, she must have asked, did I just turn
And stare in icy silence?
What was I to say? What can you say
When a love affair is over?

Now she's gone away and I'm alone
With the memory of her last look
Vague and drawn and sad, I see it still
All her heartbreak in that last look

How, she must have asked, could I just turn
And stare in icy silence?
What was I to do? What can one do
When a love affair is over?

Bassey, Shirley How Insensitive Comments

This is a great rendition, but not the equal of Laura Fygi's.

    Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Bassey had the right voice for Jobim. The base is built into the lungs. The orchestration is advanced and pushes this at you. You can't ignore the fact it's something new and startling.

    q sensibilidad para cantar!!!

Equivalent to Barbra Streisand. In my opinion, it is one of the most gorgeous songs made perfect-ly for Shirley Bassey's classy vocals. Best, Dr. Tyler Lord Hamilton, Ph.D. (forth-coming)

Dame Shirley is far better IMO -- Babs makes every song sound the same.

Go to the source of this great music Tom Jobim and there's plenty to see.  He took most of the greatest voices of the era and converted them to his tempo and alluring songs.  They easily lean toward classical.  The greatest t south american composer.

    Dame Shirley!

Thks Harriet...This song is a great example of Shirley performing a subtle song.  Many think of Shirley as only the powerful vocalists, but part of her powerful ability is to be able to sing both by hitting the roof as well as to sing a beautiful soft melody, Regards, Scot

Beautiful, refined. As always, classy Bassey.

Just lIke Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, and Patty LaBelle and other female and male singers (i.e., Tom Jones), Shirley Bassey has an extremely powerful instrument, and of course, she's known for it.  However, just like Streisand, Garland and LaBelle, Shirley Bassey has recorded thousands of songs and her library contains a diverse mix of subtle and powerful songs, and sad and happy songs, etc.  Bassey's talent is not about histrionics, and it's shallow and naive to suggest such.

Your comment is right on.  I've uploaded this and many other songs like this to show people who otherwise are naïve about the incredibly diverse vocal talent of Shirley Bassey.   In live concerts, Shirley loves the big note, but that's because that's what her audience expects of her, and she delivers!   But, as you mentioned, she can sing songs like this with equal ease.

ATTENTION: Dame Shirley Bassey will be appearing at the 2013 Academy Awards Show In Hollywood on February 24th. She will perform for the 50th James Bond anniversary celebration! Wonderful News! Bassey is herself celebrating 60 (Diamond) years in Show Business, starting back in 1953.

Thanks Scot, I'll look them up. She is a great singer no doubt about it, but I could never listen to her for more than 20 minutes at a time. All the histrionics get a bit tiring.

Eamonster1 That is the face of ambition. Beverly Sills retired at 50; in her 50's, Shirley Bassey collected her talent, N expertise to re-record a little number called: 'Memory.' I googled the meaning of the word "histrionics." I'm not really a student of 'Man.' I specialize in truth, not facts. I am many things; the angel of music being my favourite. She did it!- made it top...'Hungry Years.' I could listen to her sing forever, N a day!

Eamonnn...I've uploaded a ton of clips and recordings where Shirley sings subtle. Bassey has the voice to sing any way she likes, but people tend to watch only a few songs like Goldfinger, and she is forever classified in their minds forever as one type of singer. Take some time to view some of Shirley's softer sided songs like, 'He Was Beautiful' , 'Sometimes (Not Often Enough), Emotion, Reach for the Stars, Nature Boy, If I Should Find Love Again, and so many others recordings. Regards, Scot

  18. E.... ....

Wow, I didn't know she could do subtle. Great rendition.

  19. I.... ....

exquisite rendition.. proving to those who think she only sings on full volume, she remains one of the finest vocalists ever
