Barnett, Courtney - Nameless, Faceless Lyrics
Don't you have anything better to do
I wish that someone could hug you
Must be lonely
Being angry
Feeling over-looked
With all the pent-up rage that you harness
I'm real sorry
Bout whatever happened to you
I wanna walk through the park in the dark
Men are scared that women will laugh at them
I wanna walk through the park in the dark
Women are scared that men will kill them
I hold my keys
Between my fingers
He said "I could eat a bowl of alphabet soup
And spit out better words than you"
But you didn't
Man, you're kidding yourself if you think
The world revolves around you
You know you got lots to give
And so many options
I'm real sorry
Bout whatever happened to you
I wanna walk through the park in the dark
Men are scared that women will laugh at them
I wanna walk through the park in the dark
Women are scared that men will kill them
I hold my keys
Between my fingers
Go on, tell me
You're just kidding
He said, she said
Nameless, faceless

is it bad I relate to the first few lyrics about pent up anger and sitting in the dark?
I mean I don't fuckin' flame people online but I doubt that the fact I can relate is healthy.
I thought the title was “Endless, Nameless” at first
haha me too
Vetty goot much awesome!
It's clear she stole the title from "Endless Nameless" by Kurt
K Biz lol I wouldn’t use stole it’s okay to be influenced by an artist and reference them in your own original song. She’s obviously a big Kurt cobain fan and wanted to reference the song a lot of bands do stuff similar to this it’s not stealing.
Described me lol

I thought of this song today. I was hiking in a wilderness park all alone. I came around a corner and this guy was standing there. He asked me if I needed water. I said, "No" and kept moving. I thought it was strange that he would offer me water because I was almost back to the parking lot and obviously not in any distress. He tried to start a conversation, asked me if I'd seen anything interesting even though I didn't stop. "Lot's of lizards" I said. He started to speak again, even though I was moving quickly away from him and I said, "This conversation is over" without looking back. He kept calling, "Hey, hey, why..." but I was moving to quickly to hear. After a while, I looked back and didn't see him. I picked up a rock and I was walking so fast even though it was a hot day. I did not have my picnic as I had planned. I just got in the car and drove away. We appeared to be the only people in that part of the park. You never know.
Love the cats !See my new video :)
I like this song but WTF with these lyrics
Before you comment at least see her live.. 3 times in, there's not a person better equiped to carry the so called torch.. HooDoo Gurus, Saints n Angels will agree..

This tune is great. And live it's muuuuuuch better, as the whole Courtney's repertoir. She gets a sharper sound in her concerts.

Albert Tucker's Images of Modern Evil is still as relevant today as it was in the years after WWII
Sounds a little bit like a "female" Strokes, some "Is this it" or "Room on fire" vibes.
That's positive huh ! 😁
Are there more musicvideos out there like this? I need some inspo
Punk as fuck
So mesmerized by the animation I had to watch three times before I even heard the lyrics.
Alphabet soup tastes like shit anyway.

Ah, i love Idles. Liberal indie/punk seems pretty popular right now, hell yeah.
the original quote for both comes from margaret atwood
@Scott Crookston yes then, idles are top tier
Love that song.
Toxic masculinity in a nutshell and really good musical wrapping ❤️
Eerie and sad being that a few woman recently were murdered at night walking through a Park in Australia.
it feels weird coping with this generation tbh
Courtney played Buenos Aires this week. Crikey! Freaking perfection and the Argentines loved her.
Love it🐶
This is such a cool sounding song, and the music video is pretty dope. It's really a shame that the song is feminist propaganda.

After hearing this on the radio a few times and one day paying attention to one part that stuck out had me cracking up....I hold my keys between my fingers......I lost it......lol.....great song
This song is pretty good
Pleasantly surprised to see so many dudes in the comments saying "hey, that's right, we have to do better," and holding others accountable for their shit.
Not saying every decent man needs a medal or something, but I felt the need to extend some gratitude for the good men out there.
Anyways, this video is amazing. I'm a late fan of Courtney and I just adore her and am so happy I found her here. :)
@P K Millenial here. Real progress is made when we start thinking "I need to do better too." I don't speak for others. I'm certainly still learning.

Going to take a risk, by suggesting on the internet to read. Margaret Atwood inspired the chorus, so go and read her amazing books, you will become better by reading her work.
if i hadn't googled it, it probably would've taken me years to figure out she was saying "laugh" at them
Do any Japanese watch this video?
LUDOVIAJANTE
Great LP; and very Fort Apache in sound.
Much love!
Cool video and song, but the message is kinda dumb. Firstly, this blatantly says in general, men are angry killers which is just stupid and belittling, maybe think next time and say "A man" "A woman" "The man" etc. so you don't generalise.
Secondly, according to this song, an unarmed man walking near you in a park is more dangerous than a lady with keys clasped in her hands. Logic
punkaddict you're complaining about a feminist song and crying about a Margaret Attwood quote. just fucking grow up, man.
@punkaddict You sure have interesting opinions, buddy. And you clearly listen to some very interesting punk.
@RedPugie Wtf I'm pointing out a simple criticism that prevented me from feeling attached from this otherwise very enjoyable song. Just because it's a quote, doesn't mean it belongs in a song. I'm not the one judging someone's 'punk credibility', if anything that's the least punk thing I've heard lol, so focused on my username which has nothing to do with this. Honestly kinda sad, can no-one express thier differing opinion anymore? I'm done with this toxic comment section
punkaddict cry more .
congratulations. you missed the point by a mile.
first i thought she sang "i hold my kids between my fingers" wow oh wut mindblown when i find out that it was keys
Margaret Atwood
I love this song in general, and of course wouldn't change anything in it, as it is the artist's choice, but it is a bit of a shame that it has that feminist quote there: "Men are scared that women will laugh at them. Women are scared that men will kill them." I find it outdated if she's being serious about it. It would have been funnier to take a piss on these stupid super passionate/bitter 'keyboard warriors" on both sides of the argument while, of course, still making her case as a woman (which is what she does until that ultra simplification/caricaturization of both men and women's experiences)... Still, nice song, and it will probably become a guilty pleasure once people in the comments start tearing me apart...
When's the last time a woman raped and murdered a guy in a park at night? Why is it that a significant amount of murdered women were killed by current or former male partners? (http://time.com/3670126/femicides-turkey-women-murders/)
Of course the percentage of men who are rapists/murderers is tiny, but it still happens, so it's natural to be afraid of the possibility. Because it is a very real possibility, and it only has to happen once.
At no point does she say that all men are murderers. There's nothing "feminist" about it. It's simply a description of her feelings and those of many women.
The thing is, at no point does expressing that belittle all men or deny our fears or problems. It's called a dialogue: different people talking about their different experiences of the world. This is a good thing. Other people are not automatically "wrong" and "bad" and "brainwashed" when we don't agree with them (I'm not saying you say that, but it seems to be the general sentiment nowadays).
The song does put provide some perspective though. We may be afraid of many things (afraid of being wrongly accused of rape, for example, though I think it happens way less), but we are generally nor afraid of being murdered by a woman in a park or one we date.
Cheers.
5 - "The thing is, at no point does expressing that belittle all men or deny our fears or problems. It's called a dialogue: different people talking about their different experiences of the world. This is a good thing. Other people are not automatically "wrong" and "bad" and "brainwashed" when we don't agree with them (I'm not saying you say that, but it seems to be the general sentiment nowadays)."
Again, I think that the problem is not the fear that she's referring to, but I see a trivialization that is clear to me.
To give another example, it's as if I said that "women at work are afraid to be catcalled/fired while men at work are afraid to die in an accident."
We all know that most work fatalities happen to men. Yes they're real, yes they shouldn't be ignored (and they're not). But if I’m talking about men's fear to die at work (which is already a generalization), why would I have to drag women into the equation? Is it unfair because men die more? Is it somehow women's fault? And mainly, why would I bring up something about females that seems like is 'not a big deal' in comparison, like it is the worst thing that could happen to them?
One's argument can be that men are mentioned, as you said at the beginning, because a very significant number of the perpetrators of femicide are men (and let us remember that 'femicide' is defined as: "The killing of a woman or girl, in particular by a man and on account of her gender." which would mean that these crimes committed by couples or former couples are because the victim was a woman and couldn't be related to any other element; converting every of such murders into a gender motivated issue unless we're talking about homosexual couples. - I personally find the application of this definition faulty too) But there's another important variable that, to me, should be taken into account:
When we talk about abusers, in a general fashion, we're mostly dealing with positions of power. Even in nature, predators look for the easiest pray, the one that will struggle the least. Of course, it doesn't happen 100% of the time, because nothing does, but it's mostly that way. So in that spirit, what would be, for example, what a school bully, an abusive husband and a sex predator have in common? Do they search for 'strong people' to attack? Do they act when everyone is looking, or is it the other way around? Why is she afraid of walking through a 'park in the dark' and not during the day? If the park were full of people at night, would she feel afraid as well?
Abusers have physical (and often psychological) power over their victims. Men happen to be mostly physically stronger than women. So it's more likely that a man overpowers a woman without the need of a weapon, or punches or strangles one to death, than the other way around. It's also more likely that a man accidentally kills a woman during a physical fight than the other way around (not that these things should be tolerated whether they're intentional or not). And it is more likely that a woman abuses or kills a physically weaker person (like a kid or an elder man or woman) or that she kills or overpowers a man by using a weapon (we all know the many stories of the wife beater who was one day stabbed or shot down by his wife). This is not to say that most men didn't/don't mean to kill women or anything like that. What I'm saying is that intentionally or not it's generally easier for them to do it and that does affect reality and statistics.
About the "wrong", "bad" and "brainwashed" part, I completely agree with you; even when we disagree in most parts. I'Am trying to show you my perspective, and yes I might talk about 'objectivity' more than once, but I don't mean to be rude (the video and song are extensively about people just being cunts, so it would be quite funny to go down that road).
6 - "The song does provide some perspective though. We may be afraid of many things (afraid of being wrongly accused of rape, for example, though I think it happens way less), but we are generally not afraid of being murdered by a woman in a park or one we date."
Yeah, but we're still afraid of being 'murdered in a park' and the dating thing is a risk of human relationships; as you see it happens with family members and friends too. Some make this a problem of 'men' and 'women' when it is almost strictly a problem of criminality and the elements linked to gender have to do more with physical and biological differences than anything else. Men and women who rape and/or kill are punished for that. You know how deranged one has to be to do something that most probably will destroy the rest of one's life? Even being accused of doing such things is already a big issue. Our society does not overlook or reward rape, abuse or murder, and it's not like we shouldn't worry about murder or rape because women don't do that in big numbers, they're still very real problems for us whether the perpetrators are men or women and whether we're men or women, and I'll give you an example of what it looks like to me when people make that about gender:
What if I said that most terrorist attacks in Europe during the last 10 to 20 years have been perpetrated by people from the middle east (whether immigrants or direct descendants of them)? That is objectively true, but is it all there is? How does it sound?
It is an argument that certain people make... You know, the kind of people who simplify complicated issues and make them seem like the fault of specific groups with certain common characteristics.
In the case of my example we have to take into account a great deal of things: education, religion, integration, among others... And when we dig into that, race almost disappears and a terrorist stops being 'a middle eastern terrorist' and becomes simply 'a terrorist' (at least, ideally)... So what if I put in a song: "Europeans are afraid that Arabs will kill them. Arabs are afraid that Allah won’t like them"? See how over the top that is? Why? Because reality isn't like that, that is a vulgar oversimplification.
Also, for the part in which you said "... afraid of being wrongly accused of rape, for example, though I think it happens way less". When it comes to amounts, I can simply quote "Of course the percentage __ is tiny, but it still happens, so it's natural to be afraid of the possibility. Because it is a very real possibility, and it only has to happen once."
And, again, I'm not angry or offended or anything. Like I said, I like the song and the video, and my intention isn't to offend you either, but I believe that comparisons like the one I criticized should be put to test and debated, as all ideas should.
@Leo Rodríguez Hi. I think you make a lot of interesting points.
Personally, I do think that "gender-based violence" exists, though. And, yes, of course it's related to women's perceived or real biological or social weakness. A discussion about that could go on forever though, and I honestly don't have the time or energy right now to try and refute all your points.
What's more important for me, however, is that this song (like all pieces of art) offers a specific perspective. It doesn't seek to be an objective, impartial analysis. So I think that, in stead of saying "Oh this is so wrong I disagree with this so much", it would be more interesting to think "Ok, this is someone's point of view and even if I don't agree or if it doesn't coincide with my knowledge and experience, I can still think about why it exists and try to empathize with that person". (Among other things, because I know that my knowledge and experience, just like those of every single person, are highly limited.)
If I were to write a song that went:
"Europeans are afraid that Arabs will kill them. Arabs are afraid that Allah won’t like them"
It would definitely describe how a lot of people feel (at least the part about Europeans), irrespective of whether those feelings are, from your or my point of view, justified.
Art makes generalizations. Art seeks to provoke. And here we are having a civilized exchange on YouTube because of this song. Not too bad.
@gringochucha I get what you're saying. As a 'creator' myself it might be something that I wouldn't do (as in, a path I wouldn't take if I were to write a song), but it's true that trying to make something like this 'objective/impartial' (or interpret it that way, for that matter) would take the 'art' part from it and would leave it being some kind of 'dead/boring' speech. Your point couldn't be clearer. I really appreciate that, though. Have a good one!
radiodoblenueve.com
THOSE women are scared, who deep inside know that they did everything to make men want to kill them. Becouse you know you would kill men if you had the power and they did as much shit against you as you did to them.
Women with healthy values and a healthy mind are not scared, becouse they don't percive men as their enemies.
When you (your sex) stops killing us then the song will be outdated. Where i live three women have been killed by their "man' in the last month. Song sounds on target (pun intended) to me.
Great !

I’m surprised there aren’t any more dislikes people usually hate it when someone even mildly insinuates that any of the problems mentioned in this song exist. To allot of people the idea that a woman would have any reason to be afraid of men is stupid, maybe I just meet more people like that bc I’m in the south????

I listen to this song on the walk home after work to remind myself that I'm the one people are afraid of so I shouldn't be as scared about getting mugged as I am.
"You sit alone at home in the darkness"
Me, at home alone in the dark: wait what did she say?
The visuals describe women as Earth and men as sausages.
Moo Bear No I think it’s meant to be the world revolving around sausages, not women revolving around sausages...

How can anybody dislike?
Gee this is good.
Such an amazing video! The timing of the animations and cuts or transitions adds so much to the energy of the original song.
Also, I wonder how Kim Deal feels about being animated as a cat?
Lol thank fuck I'm sober, not sure I could handle that video in any other sort of state
This vid so funny!
Heard this song heaps on triple j then I started listening to the inspired podcast and got a whole new respect for this legend

You know your'e right there. True. I see irony. Kurt C said copying is a waste of you. Shes young, shell grow out of the idol phase, and might even get singing lessons?

It's like a 90's britpop band named Elastica
Just got this song as a recommendation of Deezer when I was listening The Big Moon, just needed one listening and then I've been listening for around two days, I came here to see if there was a video, this has a cool vibe 🤙🏼
