Barenaked Ladies - Hello City Lyrics
Hello city ...
Another night at the Palace
'cause there is nothing else to do.
The same people, the same drinks and the same music,
I think this harbour town is waist deep and sinking fast.
[Chorus:]
Hello city,
You've found an enemy in me
Hello city, hello city.
Second night at the Warehouse,
and my mock turtleneck just reeks.
From the liquor room to the changeroom,
of the hotel room,
I wish this seaside beerhall would
sink into the bay.
[Chorus]
Maybe I caught you at a bad time,
maybe I should call you back next week,
maybe half the fault was mine that
the sun didn't shine on Barrington Street.
It's three o'clock in the morning,
and I'm hungry so let's eat.
Climb down three flights to the streetlights
and the bar-fights, we're just taking in the sights.
I hope tomorrow that I wake up in my own bed.
[Chorus]

Barenaked Ladies Hello City Comments
Great song by BNL....this one of my favorites.....along with This is Where it Ends, A, Intermittently, Pinch Me, One Week, It's All Been done, Enid , Brian Wilson. Box Set and Grade 9 and Life, In a Nutshell and Be my Yoko Ono
I live in Halifax
But I love the band so
mixed feelings about this song
They played it here one of the times they toured the east coast, and it was pretty well received- they were like, "Well if you liked that one, you'll love our new song, 'Dartmouth sucks!'"
Halifax...for sure
My fave BL song
just found this song, BNLs Rock!
Lol They wrote this because they played in Halifax before they were famous .. They were treated like shit even being booed off the stage one of the night... They promised to never play there again.. They did years later and opened the show with this..😀
I saw them live in Halifax😂
Fuck this song Nova Scotia is the shit Winnipeg is a shit show
They played this in Halifax last night and it was amazing.
Halifax is like" Fuck yeah!"
came cum :d
What the fuck did Halifax do to him to deserve a hate-song?
bluenoserr my teacher punched one of the members in the face
this song basically: "@ god delete Halifax please"
Road trip nostalgia
hands down their best album
my jam when I was a kid
That intro is SO jazzy! It's my favorite part of the song!
Poor Halifax, my hometown :( haha
Was just thinking about this when making a video about my son's first donair... "it's three o'clock in the morning, I'm hungry so let's eat"
Every city has dives. In Halifax, they included The Carleton & the Palace (at the time.) BNL wrote that song after their first tour east, I believe. I bought the CD in Halifax for my then-boyfriend's birthday in the late '90s. I didn't know about "Hello City" until my brother-in-law told me what it's about. My b/f was a Hfx transplant from Montreal who turned against BNL after listening to that song!
Heather MacKinnon well to be fair he wrote it because they were treated like shit the first time they played there...
2nd night at the warehouse and my mock turtle neck just reeks. woo ooh ooh ugh lmao
Tyler R I am freaking out. I read your comment down the line EXACTLY when it played in the song 🤯
Go Naked!!!
Flashback.....and streaking
the problem is with their travel agent... Halifax is a nice city.. so long as you don't go to the palace (closed now) or stay at the Carlton... although its true the Sun never shines on Barrington St its a north south street with tall buildings...
♥♥♥Love this song and The Barenaked Ladies"!♥♥♥
Sounds like happy hour...
@PolarBearGamer Yes we know!!There are 2 lines in the song from Happy Hour..did you not listen long enough to hear them.
It's like a tribute to the Housemartind.
Looks like "The Housemartin" ... The same voice. Love it
Not their best song, but one of their most quintessential. A song that is so encouraging to remember represented what Canada used to latch onto. Self-deprecating but out of a sense of honesty and growth, not a wall of sarcasm. This is Canadian art that I am immensely proud of and that we need to learn from today.
riddlethos you put way too much thought into useless shit. Stick with criminal justice
that part with the horn in the beginning is perfect.
To those who are asking, I think this is about Toronto.... I recognize the names of two of the clubs and they still exist, though I think the Warehouse is now known as "The Docks".
Don't take that as gospel, though.
@BluntBandit thank you for being ANOTHER person who has not read comments previous to yours.
+Mathew Watts -- they must be Canadians! :-)
+Gordon Fawks This song is about... Oh wait. Three other people beat me to it. ...At different times. Sorry! Moving on.
I thought it was about Halifax....
Halifax, Nova Scotia - Barrington street ^^
Cool tribute to the group 'The Housemartins' with their son 'Happy Hour' at the end.
:)
YEP.....Housemartins are awesome.....their first two albums are fantastic
this is probably one of their best songs
That's the Coca Cola ball, right?
You can’t be serious.
Sir Oliver Mowat C.I. in East Toronto. My Sister knew some of them and was in the same grade as one or more of them.. Unsure who.
what high school is that?
I am from Halifax and think this song is great
Hello 1990 s : Great Cool Music ~
I, too, sometimes wish this seaside beer hall would sink into the bay.
How deep.
and I'm hungry, so let's eat. best of the '90's.
Big hate on Halifax. Can't blame them the nightlife has got better in the last 20 years, but as Bubbles says its "gre-he-he-heasy"
Fave Album! 1992!
..... mock turtleneck!
Yes it is.
It's Happy Hour by the Housemartins that this song takes a couple of lines from. And yes BNL and The Housemartins/Beautiful South have a very similar sound and fun approach to concerts. Would love to see both bands perform together.
Inspiration*
HAPPY HOUR
The Palace had no idea what they were doing, they played dance tunes all night then would abruptly shut it off to have a live band come on... it would not have mattered how good the band was. They drunk idiots would boo because they wanted the booming dance music back. Most people would pile into Jerry's, the a joining dance bar until the band was done playing to the 12 people who stayed to listen. Sad, but it did inspire the BNL to write one of my favorite songs.
gotta love canada
I don't think you understand the difference between ripoff and reference/tribute.
It's Happy Hour again...again....again
lol ahh to be a teenager with out bills again ........
When I was a young teenager, I would help my dad with his lawn care business. Sometimes between houses, we would listen to this CD, and it grew to be one of my favorite to listen to with him. Hearing this song today brings me back to those days, where working was fun and I could use my income to buy cool stuff. Now I hate going to my job where I'm treated like garbage and I'm constantly worrying about bills, but it's all I can do. And it's funny, because I think that's what the song's about.
Im gonna learn how to play this song:its in A,isnt it?
I like this song!
@LongHairedLoser Me too!
it's 3 o'clock in the morning.....and im hungry so lets eat
I wish I wasn't from Halifax so I could like the song better
It is I assure you
Great song but I especially love the first 18 seconds. Love that horn.
"It's 3 O'clock in the morning... And I'm hungry so let's eat..." Man what a great song... Hopefully this isn't forgotten...
HALIFAX HATES YOU TOO
Poor Halifax.
Sounds like the Housemartins at half speed.
my god...love this song
These guys were kids.
I have a will written just in case I get hit in a bus, this is the one song I requested played at my funeral.
love this song
These guys are REALLY talented
this song is pretty good but my favorite song by them is "Sound of Your Voice"
gotta love their music. This was the song that made me start liking them. Was even better when i found out they went to my highschool.
It's rater strange that this song makes me proud to be a haligonian.
Considering it's about how much my home town sucks XD
Still love it.
