Barenaked Ladies - Enid Lyrics

[Chorus]
Enid we never really knew each other anyway.
Enid we never really knew each other anyway.

it took me a year to believe it was over,
and it took me two more to get over the loss.
I took a beating when you wrote me those letters,
and every time I remembered the taste of your lipgloss.

[Chorus]

Maybe we always saw right through each other anyway
but Enid we never really knew each other anyway.

There were times when I wanted to hurt you,
and there were times when I know that I did.
There were times when I thought I would kill you,
but can you blame me I was only a kid.

Tell me why we never respected each other.
and tell me why I never believed that you were a person too.
I always thought that you fancied my brother.
I may not have liked it, oh but memory is a strange thing, oh, and Enid?
Enid I remember you.

[Chorus]

Maybe we always saw right through each other anyway,
but Enid we never really knew each other anyway.

It took me a year to believe it was over,
and it took me two more to get over the loss.
I took a beating when I wrote you those letters,
and every time you told me to get lost.

Now it's not fair to say that it's
'cause I was three inches shorter then,
and it's not fair to say that it's 'cause
I was only fifteen years old.
But maybe it's fair to say it was a lack of communication,
I took a phone message, oh and speaking of communication; oh, and Enid,
Enid you got a cold.

I can get a job I can pay the phone bills
I can cut the lawn, cut my hair, cut off my cholesterol
I can work overtime I can work in a mine
I can do it all for you,
But I don't want to.

Enid we never really knew each other anyway.

The most annoying thing about Warner branded videos on YouTube...

They don't wait for the song to be over before pushing links to other videos.

Enid was a basket girl and student at a high? school pool in Scarborough. Absolutely gorgeous. She hung out with us, the lifeguards and swimming instructors for a summer or two. I remember when my BFF Toast brought her to several parties. She did wear delicious lip gloss.
To make the world even smaller Toast and I were at the Peter Gabriel concert and talked to them because we went to neighbouring high? schools.. My brothers BBF had the monkey, Troy, mentioned in $1 000 000. I loved Scarberia.

  23. Hong Kong Hermit

25 years on, this video looks awful. Yet back in the day I saw it just once on a Saturday morning video show and instantly fell in love with Barenaked Ladies. Took me a while to find the album though, because even in '91 a TV show just after kids programmes was a bit wary of the band name and listed them as "B.N. Ladies". Pre-internet, going around record shops looking for an album knowing only an abbreviated version of the band name... well it made it hard work and I got a lot of "never heard of them mate". Once I got that album though, I had it on constant rotation for a year. And it still owns all these years later.

  24. Harriet Earle

    Cracking outfits as always!

I can teach you how to dance, how to sing, how to knit
How to make things that you never, ever made before
Enid, I can teach you how to use a cookie cutter
To make crazy things out of Play-Doh
Little houses, little farms, little accessories for your mom,
For your Barbie set, for your friends and your family
Enid, I can teach you how to snowmobile, cross-country ski, snow-shoe

  58. SisterToSleepx

Do fictional Enids never end up in healthy relationships? (Or is this also about the Arthurian Enid, somehow?)

    TovaShai

According to Wikipedia, the lyrics were written about/inspired by Steve's high school girlfriend, and the name "Enid" was inspired by a waitress at a diner because they were amused Enid was dine spelled backwards. This article is given as a source for Wikipedia... pretty interesting!

5.01 - What is the Pepsi-esque symbol on the newer Gordon cover?
That is a ball used to play street hockey, I guess they see it as a symbol of their childhood. The ball can also be seen inside the shoebox on the back and inside cover of the Shoebox EP.

What a great song by a great Canadian band! This sounds as fresh now as it did when it was released in the early 90s. Really love the introspective flavour of the song.....Enid....I could do this and that and such and such.....I could do it all for you...BUT I DON'T WANT TO!         Priceless finish!

    rebjiii

YEP.....this might be their best song......they do have many classics

  62. J. Mascis

I miss the Steven Page days. I understand, drug conviction while making a children's album. Let bygones be bygones. Right? It was very un-Canadian of them to let Steve go. He was a good guy who made a mistake.

    silvertamagachi

+Dan Workname Pretty sure Page actually ended up leaving . . . otherwise a lot of BNL's songs about him "running away" and stuff don't really make sense.

    Kimarie Sings

+silvertamagachi ^^This is exactly what happened. He was in a new relationship and did not want to go with them on tour. I saw him(Steve) recently in an Canadian act called "Art of Time Ensemble" they were on tour performing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (which was wonderful).

    Andrew Saul

Actually, they were cunts when he acquired a cocaine habit. Instead of helping him, the turfed him. They are fucking assholes.

    Janice C

He was already wanting to leave by that point. The arrest was just a turning point. Nobody kicked anyone out, he left on his own

    TovaShai

No, they weren't/aren't, Andrew Saul. Steven has been very vocal about his struggles with depression; he had gone through a lot of changes in his personal life including divorce, becoming a single dad, and starting a new relationship. Plus the other guys were wanting to do things artistically he wasn't interested in (like their holiday and children's albums) but he went along with it because he was outvoted. After the crapstorm that was 2008, the other guys wanted to work on a new album and tour, and he wanted to do, like, a "greatest hits" type tour instead. They decided to split ways rather than implode. Although I *LOVED* them when they were together, I understand that it wasn't best for them to stay a band and drive each other crazy. Also, you can see in the interviews right after the band broke up that Ed seems down but coming to terms with things, and Steven looks like a guy who's had the weight of the world lifted off of his shoulders.

  63. Neighbourhood Witch

Video makes me smile so much! From one of my all-time favourite albums, 'Gordon'

    rebjiii

Agree .......great song from an awesome album

  64. S Wagner

  65. Bobby of Gondor

I love this music video I can't believe I was 7 years old at the time when I saw it, time sure flies fast.

  66. Etigress

In 1993 my parents walked by a small club in brantford, ontario and there was a sign in the window that said "tonight @ 9 Barenaked Ladies". She thought they were strippers and didn't know they were this band. Now 22 years later she's a barenaked ladies fan and is kicking herself for not going into that club.

    Harvey Lee

@Etigress Add  another piece of trivia to that1  When BNL  were scheduled to play CITY HALL  in TORONTO  and there was a backlash[I'M TRYING NOT TO LAUGH WHILE I TYPE THIS!!]  about their name being offensive  what's  ironic is there is zero sex in their lyrics !!   they're like overgrown kids who are  great musicians !!  TELL YOUR MOM go on her for catching up  ENJOY!!

    Cap'n Game

Yeah, you get that reaction a lot with this band.
[Me around 10 or 11 or so eavesdropping on my family talking]
Mom: He's really into Barenaked Ladies lately.
Aunt: ...I didn't think he was old enough to like that yet!

    KingTekins

was that the night you were conceived?

    TovaShai

Harvey Lee, I wouldn't say there's zero sex... In the Car is all about a youthful relationship with "mutual masturbation" and a lack of "penetration"; "jeans will cream" in Celebrity; and "when we are happy we both get fat" in Life, In a Nutshell. It's Only Me (The Wizard of Magicland) is a song celebrating masturbation, and She's on Time is pretty vocal about having sex while the female partner is menstruating. Also, Off the Hook is about someone whose partner has checked out of the relationship and is having an affair, and Conventioneers is about coworkers who lust for each other, but it fizzles after they consummate their relationship on a business trip. And, sex aside, they certainly cover adult topics in Alcohol, The Flag (domestic violence), and War on Drugs (suicide).

I'm not saying that canceling the band from the show wasn't silly- it was... but there's definitely sex in their lyrics. Although they've managed to retain their playfulness, they're still adults who sing about adult things at times, and I think people forget that sometimes because of their reputation as being a fun, almost novelty, band. Although I know they've had huge success, I also believe they are criminally underrated. I love them!

  67. Joe Wallack

Best song from bnl by far!!!

  68. Steve Gallow

Great Video - Steven you are a riot!! Loved it - Look forward to seeing you in Kitchener

  69. Deanna Lee

    Cheers from an Aussie! :)

  72. Todd Foster

The Band was complete here... It made sense here.

  73. Vincent Teetsov

I've always wondered what Ed sings starting around 3:20-- but apparently it's this:

"I can teach you how to dance, how to sing, how to knit,
How to make things that you never ever made before
Enid, I can teach you how to use cookie cutters
To make crazy things out of Play-Doh.

Little houses, little farms, little accessories for your mom,
For your Barbie set, for your friends and your family
Enid, I can teach you how to snowmobile, cross-country ski, snowshoe,
    But I don't want to!"

Favourite part of the song :)

    DubiousDrewski

How did you figure that out? That IS what he's saying, it has to be.

    Tim Kinisky

Of all the times I listened to the song, i never noticed this part until now ... I scroll down and find this! Thanks!

    Brain Lock

@V Teetsov THANK YOU! All these years, "never ever made before" sounded something like "Robert Mapplethorpe" and I couldn't understand anything else! I could never understand WHY he was singing/chanting about a certain risque photographer!

    William Smith

+V Teetsov Thanks for breaking it down. I've always missed the Cookie cutters and the barbie set and snow mobile lines... I gotta get to trying to practice this.

    Tony Bensley

Wow! All this time, I thought it was just random sh*t, but those lyrics are spot on! Amazing!!

Okay drkam6, you are clearly in a bad space today, but Pierce is our friend, and the Barenaked Ladies are triple platinum, are you?
You're probably just jealous that BNL has two Billboard Awards to your zero! I think we need some space to pull the knife out of the back of the most celebrated Canadian alt-rock band of the mid 90s, you selfish, jaded ass!

  94. YAMAN2020

  98. dominic2014

Such a great song. I was too young to fully understand the storyline when this song was number one on the radio, but years later I would revisit the song and realize that the songwriter was singing not only about himself, but everyone and no one.

  99. Steve White

Really? Do you by any chance feel the same way about most people around you? 'Cause if so, you might not be finding the stupid one by looking *around* you.

Cheers. In my country you're allowed to say imbecilic things, if you like.

  100. That Lad in Plaid
