Bareilles, Sara - Poetry By Dead Men Lyrics

By the time you hear this
I'll be in the rear view mirror
I'll even wear that green dress you like
So when I disappear
You can turn around
One last look
At the girl you lost in the time you took

To make up your mind
Between two roads
Go and take some more time
But me and mine must go
I tried to wait it out, no more
Can't find the man I was waiting for

I wanted to be your girl
In a white t-shirt
Over coffee stirring in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
I wanted to be your girl
With your hands on my skin
Stirring in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
(While you read me poetry by dead men)
While you read me poetry by dead men

By the time you hear this
Who knows where I might be
Singing 'bout another near miss
Love that ended incomplete
I was ready but you weren't
So jump with your net from this bridge you've burned

I wanted to tell you things
All the secrets I've been keeping
I saw it in front of me
But then you just kept disappearing
A good dream almost
Now I tell your ghost

I wanted to be your girl
In a white t-shirt
Over coffee stirring in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
I wanted to be your girl
With your hands on my skin
Stirring in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
(While you read me poetry by dead men)
While you read me poetry by dead men

Line after line
The words just serve to remind the two of us
Oh what we could have been
Poetry by dead men
Fire from embers
How can I make you remember
With a turn of phrase
Would you turn to me if I say I still want to be your girl
I still want to be your girl

In a white t-shirt
Over coffee stirring in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
I wanted to be your girl
With your hands on my skin
Stirring in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
(While you read me poetry by dead men)
While you read me poetry by dead men

Bareilles, Sara Poetry By Dead Men Comments
  1. Lynn Marie Anderson

The feelings and sentiments she sings and writes about in a lot of her songs sometimes sound like a soundtrack to my life too. I've been with someone for a long time where I had hoped we'd grow old together, but his behavior is driving me away. Guess I'm on my own again.

  2. Harry Cox

I think Poetry by Dead Men could be a metaphor for taking down to someone. The piano is great too .

  3. Erik Koski

Best song on the album so far

  4. pcarebear1

I keep smelling coffee and cinnamon every time I hear this. This IS poetry 🤗♥️

  5. Phoebe D

I've got tickets to see her. I can't wait to see if she plays this masterpiece!

    Edit:
She did! Second song in the set after Fire. So wonderful

  7. Joshua Fagan

I have to say, that title made me think this would be a much darker and angrier song.

  8. Lefthand Lullaby

I'm on a SB marathon all day listening to her songs. Damn this woman can really write and sing. I haven't found any song i wouldn't listen to. What a great artist.

  14. Richard Culbertson

It's difficult to believe that Sarah Barielles is not one of the most talented and versatile lyricists on the planet. Add to that, the fact that her voice is so incredibly beautiful and moving.

  25. Brett Barnes

Omg! I remember that green dress from the photo shoot! It was such a pretty emerald green shade. The black belt was a nice accessory, but I would've gone with white to make it pop even more. Funny the things you remember.

Great song too. The lyrics really paint a picture in my mind. Truly artistic.

    Also this lol: http://youtu.be/tf92q6Vrj2o

  26. Meleika

Someone tell me how to feel about this whole album. I just want to talk to Sara. I wanna talk to her for days. As my frieennd. HER MUSIC DOES EVERYTHING FOR ME.
Anyone get what i mean? It's like, there is never anything out of place. I feel like she is exactly how i feel. Her music isn't defined by the lyrics, yet it is. She is a feeling. It's like, sure this is a break up song but its entirely whole. Sure this is a love song but its entirely heartbreaking. It's never one thing, you get me? It's always more, that's my word for Sara. Sara you are "More".
The honestly is why i'm so connected. I genuinely, cannot deny any of this.

    Sara,
    We love you.
    I love you.

omg this is so unique and at the same time gives me an almost Taylor Swift 1989 vibe !!!

  40. Samantha losh

    Love this song

  41. Keith Minnion

This album reminds me of when I heard Joni's "Hejira" for the first time. It wasn't "Blue" or "Court and Spark" - it was new, Joni going to new places, not repeating. Sara's new one isn't "Blessed Unrest" or "Kaleidoscope Heart" - it's new, Sara going to new places, not repeating. Good for her! I'm in.

  42. April J

My favourite from the album ♥

  43. Beaaa Aragon

"How can I make you remember? With a turn of a phrase, would you turn to me if I say

  52. nahilsolange

People who dislike videos should be ejected from the planet. The simplicity of this song makes it even more remarkable. Sara's poetry is so unique and I find it hard to believe that some people could actually dislike this. Anyway, that's just me and I admit I have deep respect for this talented lady and I just can't tolerate people who don't support her.

    Douglas Buzby

I am certain there are people that surf around and hit dislike, without ever listening to the music. There is no other logical explanation I can think of. :)

    Seith Daniel

It's almost as if people have differing opinions. Lol. I love Sara but she's not for everyone. Don't post this kind of negativity on her pages, it's unbecoming. Enjoy her talent and don't let other people's preferences dictate your outlook on life. "Ejected from the planet," dear god.

    nahilsolange

@Seith Daniel You are so right. Thanks for your advice 💜💜💜💜💜💜

    Adam.J. Raja

In All Honesty i really Dont Focus on the Negativity - if ppl Dont like this (type of) Music they Dont Need to stick around or search it out, there are So many Nice comments & Genuine fans for Sara, it Fills me with Joy & Gladness, same As Everyone of her albums, Live performances & VAST majority of her 60 Songs ~ So Special 💓
