I think its about those people that you love, and you watch as the world wears them down. It hurts and takes your breath away, hoping they will escape and be alright. The gentle encouragement she gives is when the water is rising to the point where it is about to overwhelm you, you stand firm like an island surrounded by an angry ocean. You are surrounded, but you stand firm and rise just enough above so you arent overtaken.

I read that she told VH1 that it isn't about pushing anybody away, but instead about finding out who you are your core. This also fits how I saw it before hearing interpretations, along with sharing the world with another who has found their pulsating core, their very self who won't be drowned by rising waters. It's cherishing what we do share, with select others.

I think it's about how life is tough and can bring us down. She is talking to someone she loves, watching the world tear them down and she is telling them, you can't rely on everyone, the only person you can rely on is yourself. You have to become an island and stand alone. Be an island, stand alone and not rely on any one else because relying on others and caring about what they think of you will only lead to heartache.

she totally was robbed last night. she deserved to win album of the year. i just don't get why she didn't. she literally sat there and wrote every song from her soul. she should have won for this song by itself let alone the whole album. every song is amazing. my favorite is satellite call. the lyrics and the music is genius. i was so bummed when she didn't.
