Bareilles, Sara - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Lyrics

When are you gonna come down?
When are you going to land?
I should have stayed on the farm
I should have listened to my old man
You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up with you
I'm not a present for your friends to open
This boy's too young to be singing the blues

So goodbye yellow brick road where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road

What do you think you'll do then?
I bet that'll shoot down your plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics to set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground

So goodbye yellow brick road where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road

So goodbye yellow brick road where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
I've finally decided my future lies
I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road

Bareilles, Sara Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Comments
  1. Misya React

i see how angelina's performance is inspired by this however i get angelina's vibe deeper than hers. dont get me wrong sara is a huge artist, love her too!

  2. Vania Lazaro

    So beautiful!
I didn't know Sara Bareilles. Thanks for that too Angelina Jordan.

  3. Fe Kristine

Sara you make my tears fall down. This is amazing!!! ♥️

  4. Ligaya Castilla

Some people here have watched this coz of angelina's performance..well angelina does as well..as a jazz singer she mustve been visited this video and got inspired with this version

  5. Mitch Morrison

my younger son just introduced me to this hauntingly hypnotic version. Sara flexes an amazing range as well as perfect timing of transitioning from tender to forceful and back to tender. unlike so many of the performers from AGT and The Voice, Sara sings in her own cocoon, lost in the world of Elton and Carole, and away from the vanity of today's cheap knockoffs. this version is amazing.

  6. Strong Aingel

Sorry Sara but as beautiful as this was, Angelina Jordan just gave GBYBR a positive makeover.

  7. Yngve Bekken

I have loved this version for a long time. I always thought this was a soft touch from a lady who sings well. Now I heard Angelina's version and discovered a new room in the attic, where there's more soul and less hard piano. They are both good, just evolution in Angelina. 😃

  8. Antonio M. Basilides II

This is the type of audience I would like to belong to when watching awesome performances like this. ❤🤗

  9. Anton Hallergren

Angelina Jordan blew this one out the water to

  10. Ivy mecano

Who’s watching this Feb 2020 after watching AGT’s Angelina Jordan’s version?
    ❤️❤️❤️

    Hanne Romsaas

I think hers was based on this. Very well done. And this was gorgeous! 🙌😮

  11. Dancing Stars and Moon

This felt good but I like more how Angelica Jordan sang the song. Don't get me wrong. I'm a Sara Baraeilles fan as well.

    Ligaya Castilla

They have different and unique style and soul thats it no need to compare

  12. Roh Jahat

Im here because angelina jordan sing this song...

    seeanthonyn

Same here. This very arrangement was used. Sara is so talented

    iami az

Angelina been here too, and carry this song in agt.

  13. ragnarkisten

    Angelina Jordans version is better!

    Cinnamon Boy

    just No.

  14. Asril Gunawan

    Angelina jordan brought me here

  15. foo fighter

She came, she sang & blew the yellow brick road to in a million titbits that struck my heart. 😪

  16. Lenny K Music

Just stumbled on this video and realized that Angelina Jordan's amazing performance of this song on America's Got Talent was pretty much ripped off your arrangement which neither of the judges heard...

    Natanya Lundström

    Lenny K Music same ^ !!!!!

    James-Andrew Sarmiento

no it isnt. the styles are much different

    iami az

Angelina may have been inspired to gave the rendition after seeing this. As a jazz singer she could have known sara style as well.

    Numayam

Not ripped off. Almost definitely inspired though. I would say Angelina's version wouldn't be possible without Sara's version. At the same time, I think Angelina's version has improved it quite significantly.

    Ligaya Castilla

    @Numayam right

  17. themusic writer

Such dissonance in this version. Very unique.

  18. Melissa M

    Most excellent!!!💗

  19. Ken Kilgore

My friend just turned me on to this video. Looking at the audience. You made people feel feelings. And me as well. That is the greatest thing an artist can do. Good on you, Sara. Well done...

  27. Ari Morrison

    2:14-2:17 is such great music.

  28. Bobby Baird

This version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is interesting from the point of view that the haunting repeating of the chord throughout most of it is dissonant to the melody of the song as you want it to go elsewhere musically, but she does her own interpretation and somehow by sticking with it manages to put her very own stamp on a classic song. Thanks to the lady who recommended i listen to it.

    themusic writer

    Totally agree

  29. Kevin Schaafsma

This is the same as what Jeff Buckley did to Leonard Cohen's Haleluja! A cover that is BETTER than the original!

  30. Ayesha shaikh

You are one of my fav singers..Sara..❤

  31. Bruce Lunsford

Why did they not release this as a single? I remember when her first album came out, some jealous critic was critical of her because she was "self taught" on the piano and said her piano playing was clunky.

  32. MOZ1175

This is just an epic performance.

  33. Steph Sabol

I so aspire to be able to rearrange a song this beautifully, she’s so freaking talented!

  34. I Suck at Everything

F in the chat for ever color guard that’s done a show to this song

  35. Jamie W

I think the one she did with the orchestra was slightly better.... I can’t believe I said that!! I will be stuck down tonight by karma for saying that!

  36. michael smith

She does something many don't do when covering a song. She didn't change "this boy's too young" to her gender. Many singers will make the change to be in their voice, especially if not doing so will imply a same sex type thing. Just sing the song as written, like she does.

  37. Myeonie Cotton

    piano chords pleasee

  38. supercallifragi

    This lady is beyond talent

  39. Grace McMillen

    What the hell 😭🥺

  40. Jamie W

I’ve just decided the song I want to be played at my funeral.

  41. Jamie W

Can’t watch without crying. Possibly the best cover I’ve ever heard. This woman isn’t human, she can’t be!!!!!

  42. Art Vandelay

    this sucks!

  43. Rancho La Abundancia

Elton John wouldn't be happier of this interpretation 🎶🎶🎶🎶♥️♥️♥️

    Tom

    Elton John loved it

  44. Mary H

Sara is so under rated and under appreciated. What an incredible voice and talented song writer!!!!

  45. Patricia Sullivan

    amazing rendition!

  46. Royal Tracy

Don’t so much hear this song.. I see brilliant colors: blue/ yellow/ purple/green. I taste sweetness like fresh strawberries and melons. I feel a warm comforting blanket around my shoulders. All with a huge lump in my throat and my heart about to burst from my chest...

  47. Brooke K.

this is such a beautiful cover of this song. we are using this song sung by you for our winterguard show and I'm so excited!!

  48. Louise Marie Pothier

If I was at this concert, life would be complete.

  49. Tallinyc

Sarah Bareilles has blown me away by this and her Sia cover performance and it came to my mind that she has or had some shitty agents and record labels. If i were her agent i would of taken away all the pop garbage they threw on her in her earlier years and made her appearance more raw and natural because what they failed to do with her is to focus on her absolute raw talent and allow the listener to focus on just that. Id push her to sing more vocals like this , melodramatic music. I hope she continues this path, it feels more real to who she is as an artist.

  50. Julie Stemmler

This is a master class in how to deliver a performance. Her arrangement of the song, the way she enunciates so you can understand the lyrics, and the dynamics of her soft and louds... it’s pitch perfect. I can’t stop watching this video. Any aspiring musical artist should study this.

    mysticsmb

Yup, definitely a masterclass on use of dynamics--not enough people notice or appreciate it.

  51. Messias Xavier

First day in 2020 and I'm listening this angel voice 🎙🎼
    Happy new year! 🍾
    Magic voice 💐

  52. OmniPulchra

I’m in tears. It’s so beautiful. Can she just re-record every song ever sand in English? 🥰 Lol the high note woke up my old deaf dog! It’s funny the stuff she seems to hear.

  53. Atul

    Unreal!

  54. Antonio Delos reyes

    Wow😮

  55. Bruce Davis

    1:19 absolutely amazing

  56. Joe Webster

    I'm getting divorced. This helps

    Alaina

Joe Webster wishing you the best for the future!

  57. JE D

This performance is so sublime that it knocked me sideways. I wept. I felt strangely - yet blissfully - violated, as though something was being done to the core of me without my consent. It caught me off guard, then my lip quivered and a hot tear rolled down my face.

    Louise Marie Pothier

wow. that's the best description of something i didn't know i felt. peace out.

  58. Gattuso Martin

I’ve got goose bumps listening to this. A true artist.

  59. BuD 22

    yep. that's the one.

  60. Katherine leary

    Beautiful

  61. Julie Stemmler

Sara is an f-ing musical genius and hidden gem amongst the noise of pop culture. And I’m totally ok with that. This rendition made me unexpectedly emotional. Amazing.

  62. NICE DAWG

Bernie Taupin was a country boy in England and he wrote about it in neat subtle ways and going to glamorous life from being the average guy was like being in another make believe world and he mentions going back to his plow..

  63. Wesleech

    jesus....

  64. chrisslooter

I like the dynamic of the piano. She waits a while, then plays the lower notes getting louder.

  65. Andy Mangele

    Outstandingly good!

  66. crackerman3772

    I love her.

This baby boomer feels like an idiot. I finally hear ALL the words to this Elton John song. Are the words not extra extraordinary?? I had heard Elton complement his lyricist for decades - but to hear the words of Yellow Brick Road tonight is mind blowing...

    Louise Marie Pothier

dear boomer, from fellow boomer. same. same. same.

  84. I Wear Classics

  90. NoobMC 10112

  91. NickVocals
