Barbra Streisand - Why Did I Choose You? Lyrics

Why did I choose you?
What did I see in you?
I saw the heart you hide so well
I saw a quiet man who had a gentle way
A way that caught me in its glowing spell
Why did I want you?
What could you offer me?
A love to last a lifetime through
And when I lost my heart so many years ago,
I lost it lovingly and willingly to you...
If I had to choose again,
I would still choose you...
And when I lost my heart so many years ago,
I lost it lovingly and willingly to you...
If I had to choose again,
I would still choose you...

  12. j.... ....

This was one of the first 7" records that my father bought for his first record player in 1968, though it was probably already old by then. It was an EP which also contained "My Man", "People" and "Happy Days Are Here Again"...i can just about remember the picture sleeve. Always loved all the tracks, but "Why Did I Choose You" was always my favourite!

  13. J.... 2....

I love young Barara Streisand. Now, she is too damn political and too much of a liberal.

  14. T.... T....

and watched as the tears began to fall.......mine too.......but we will meet again

  17. R.... H....

nice... but Marvin Gaye's version completely outclasses her on this.

  18. K.... E....

Barbra has over the years made me laugh out loud and cry like a baby. Her voice, that style, that wicked little twinkle in her eyes showing her fun side and the look of desperation in her face in her films and you know that she's sharing something with the world. I've many friends who like her and a couple that adore her. ME I adore her and always will and her songs and her voice will be heard and marvelled at for a very very long time. When I leave this mortal coil I want different songs played nothing religious and as my coffin disappears you'll hear " Mr. Arnstein here I am.....! "

  19. J.... S....

Wow, I still remember the first time that I heard this song. Something inside me changed for ever. Jxxx

  20. J.... B....

Perhaps unnecessary and mawkish to dream of past possibilities, but Col Tom Parker - late manager to Elvis - never wanted his boy and Barbra together.. Elvis' voice - deep baryton - would go well with Barbra's soprano - however they might have clashed as personalities: Elvis the conservative and naive Southerner. Barbra the 'progressive' and 'international' girl from New York...

  21. I.... R....

    Thank you Barbra Streisand

  22. I.... R....

Marvin Gaye sing s it too

  23. J.... U....

I sang this song to my husband at our wedding. He cried.

    J.... U....

    Outstanding!

  24. V.... ....

What a voice, a national treasure.

  25. M.... ....

This is a slightly longer version than the one that is on her first Greatest Hits album.
    Great song!

  26. D.... W....

    Just so beautiful.

  27. E.... S....

Barbra  will  always be the best singer  young middle aged  and older  of  our generation.  Hate  her politics looks or anything else ..... you can NEVER deny she has more talent than  practically anyone out there.

  28. j.... e....

this is the perfection of a singer melding with a song, sheer brilliance

  29. A.... ....

Such a BEAUTIFUL love song sung by the most wonderful singer ever!!!

  30. P.... U....

I fell in love with my husband Peter many years ago (1960's). This song sums up the love that I have for him . . .

    P.... U....

+Peter Ugrich When I think of my husband, he has past, and this song by her, makes me remember when he and I met. He is gone but my love is still strong.

    P.... U....

My story is similar. Met in '65. Married in '72, he also passed away last year. The love of my life.

  31. G.... A....

Well..I had gotten a ticket for the mezz and my sister surprised me at the last minute and got me a floor ticket..thats how I ended behine Jim...the ticket was 850.oo

  32. P.... L....

Barbra is a little bit older than me and I have been a fan for 50 years.  My husband was going to take me to see her concert in New York (I lived in UK) then, but he died, but I have all dvds. of her concerts, and every bit of memorabilia, books, cds. of her that I can find.  She brings tears to my eyes when she sings, and although her voice has deepened it still has wonderful quality.  Her diction is so clear when she sings.  Long may she be happy no matter what she does in the future.

    P.... L....

@Patricia Lavender i'm so sorry to hear that Patricia......i prayfor you that the next time Barbra does a concert you can go....you deserve it....i went to see her in Boston in 2006 and didn't realize until the second half that i was sitting behind Jim Brolin......yikes

    P.... L....

@Joseph Lemerise Thank you so much for your very kind comments. It was a very long time ago, and I consider myself very fortunate in many ways. Somehow I don't think Barbra will do another concert, but if she did it would be an unbelievable chance of a lifetime for me to see her. You must have had an excellent seat if you were behind James Brolin....how wonderful!!

  33. G.... H....

Talent and intonation of this gauge comes along (if we're fortunate) once in a generation.  The combination of Streisand's profound intellect and her genetic gift of ethereal vocal ability takes this song right into outer space.  I'm simply mesmerized.

    G.... H....

@Gordon Hall i don't think enough people realize how intelligent she is and how she uses that in her performances

    G.... H....

+Gordon Hall -- Who can ever forget the first time hearing this song? She sang it beautiful (with stunning close-ups) in her Color Me Barbra special, which is fortunately on YouTube. The record version is a work that cuts through every easy description -- beyond any possible comparison with any other singer.

  34. b.... ....

What is the matter with me?  This show, "The Yearling", David Wayne, Dolores Wilson, ran for three performances.  I was at one of them and I LOVED it.  This is one of the wonderful songs.  "The Kind of Man a Woman Needs" is another and "I'm All Smiles" the third.  Barbra recorded them all.  It's 50 years ago and I can see the scene where this song was performed just by closing my eyes.  Gorgeous and beautifully done here.

    b.... ....

Considering that it had such good songs, it is surprising that "The Yearling" was unsuccessful.

    b.... ....

+catman916 This is lovely. I learned this song (as a pianist}, along with "I'm All Smiles", off this album back in the 60s. I had no idea  where they had come from. I had seen the original Gregory Peck film, "The Yearling", as a young kid way back in the 40s (IIRC, 1946), but until fairly recently, I was completely unaware that they had made a musical of it. Shame on me, I guess. In the late 70s, I had my wife-to-be (a singer) learn this song, and she would sing it to me on-stage. I still consider it to be "Our Song". Thanks much for the post.☺

    b.... ....

Streisand also recorded "My Pa" from the same show.

  35. W.... B....

She recorded it twice, one for the single and one for the album.  She did that a lot.
In fact "Happy Days Are Here Again," "My Coloring Book," "Lover Come Back to Me" and "When the Sun Comes Out" on her first two albums were previously recorded for singles and with different arrangements.  This version was the longer version of "Why DId I Choose You."

    W.... B....

As good as it is, in my opinion, the single version does not compare to the album version. Her voice seems more mature here.

  36. R.... I....

This is the first time I've heard this song. Even at so young an age, she still
sounds beautiful. Thanks to anyone who put this up.

    R.... I....

She was just 23 when this was recorded, Robin. I highly recommend her albums recorded in the period 1963-66 because they truly capture her youthful exuberance and wonderful voice.

    R.... I....

Actually,  I preferred her voice before she had Jason.   It deepened after his birth.  Here,  she was at her finest.

    R.... I....

+Robin -- I found your comment about her younger voice amusing. Streisand was in her prime voice-wise in the 1960s and early 70s. Voice had broader range, for one. If you watch the YouTube videos for her first two TV specials you will hear what I mean.

  37. A.... N....

This song is for you Len.

  38. S.... ....

Put simply? You're right! Pity her voice is rather gone now.... but we had her in fine shape until she was roughly sixty-five.

  39. S.... ....

I'll tell you one thing.... she's VERY young in this version. Listen to how youthful her voice is compared to the version she did for the television special. She's sublime in both.

  40. S.... ....

her politics are as sublime as her looks and singing ability ... why can't you separate her inborn talent from your differing point of view from hers politically? (Especially considering she has the courage of he convictions)

  41. M.... R....

Barbra is the best singer of the world.

  42. M.... f....

    because i loved you x

  43. R.... N....

I think and I talk, unlike many of the pos(t)ers here.

  44. S.... C....

Asolutely beautiful! Almost--ALMOST!--makes up for her crappy politics....

  45. C.... S....

I've loved this version for thirty plus years and play it at least once every six months. For those of us in a long term marriage or committed relationship, this says it all musically
