Laura Nyro: great writer, lousy singer.

Jimi Hendrix is almost universally regarded as the greatest rock guitarist ever, yet in many of his recordings his guitar is out of tune, and he certainly wasn't a great singer technically, but Hendrix fans don't care because the music is so good, and is infused with emotion - it moves people, and that's what you want from music. Ditto Nyro, in spades. Nyro was also very brave, because she pushed the natural range of her voice to realize her art. For those that have perfect pitch and are perhaps too conscious of technique, maybe sometimes it just gets in the way. Emotion over technique anyday, for me.

Barbara has a nice voice, but there's noone like Laura Nyro..!

This is the first, and only, version of this song I ever heard. I was 10 years old. I loved it then and I love it now. I have so many bad memories of my childhood, but this song brings back some good ones.

There is nothing in this version. No passion, no emotion, just a cutesy pop song. The exact opposite of what Laura Nyro was all about. She was worth a hundred schlock singers, at least.

Get your hearing checked! Seriously, Barbra's voice is a force of nature and no other female could compare. She arguably had the greatest pop female voice of the twentieth century.

Barbra Streisand may be technically perfect as a singer, but I FEEL something when I hear Laura Nyro sing her original version(s of anything)... not to mention this arrangement is rather lame in comparison.  

+Den Knee That's why everyone knows who Laura Nyro is and Barbra Streisand is virtually unknown outside of the music industry. I am a right-wing conservative who disagrees with almost everything that Barbra Streisand stands for, but her (singing) voice is golden! Nyro's, average at best.

I can appreciate Barbra's perfect pitch and golden voice, but Nyro's (maybe imperfect) raw emotion MOVES me. Have a listen to Laura's recordings of "Lazy Susan", "The Man Who Sends Me Home" or "I Never Meant to Hurt You" and let me know if you don't FEEL something. I'll take a bum note with raw emotion over a perfectly sung performance where the artist doesn't really connect with the song any day. But, maybe that's just me. And I do appreciate Streisand, I just don't think she tops Nyro singing Nyro... even if she had the hits.

This is far better than laura's version. Don't kid yourself ! laura was a good songwriter but most people wouldn't think of her as a singer because she wasn't that good. Sorry, but the truth!
