Barbra Streisand - Life On Mars Lyrics

It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mother is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
As she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
It's on Amerika's tortured brow

Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times before
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
Is there life on Mars?

Barbra Streisand Life On Mars Comments
  1. T.... C....

An intriguing and dramatic rendition. A brave cover. A lot of fun. Brava. Big fan of this version.

  2. M.... P....

I have never heard Barbara song in which I didn't get chills but she doesn't hold hold a candle to David Bowie. This is David Bowie's song. No one can touch it, not even Barbara!

  3. A.... ....

at the moment she had the voice to pull it off but the orquestra and conductor were horrible

  4. P.... O....

All the magic in this amazing song has disapeard 😌 in this version

  5. H.... V....

I love Barbra and love David too but this one doesn’t work. Can’t believe how bad this sounds compared to the original.

    H.... V....

its perfect , you dont get it thats all, stick to bowie

  6. E.... C....

I see some of the bad comments, but I liked her doing this song as a kid. Certainly not a favorite of mine, but I thought it was okay.

  7. j.... ....

Very boring, Terrible. She should have covered Rebel Rebel.

    j.... ....

jerste Oh, I concur! Considering how rich the original was with its orchestrated touches, you would have thought that with her background she would have at least kept those in proper. Yeech.

As David said, “Bloody awful. Sorry Barb, it was atrocious.”

  8. L.... L....

David Bowie thought this was awful. Her boyfriend needed to stick to his day job. Hairdressing is not a transferable skill to music producing!

You need to go and listen to Bowie's own version. It's neither a great vocal - pretty much sprechgesang (aka speak-singing) - nor anything more than a straightforward reading of his lyric. He was certainly a pop genius, but never a particularly good singer. I don't think this is Streisand's best work by a long shot, but it's a bit rich of Bowie to slam her for actually, you know, SINGING the song he wrote.

    L.... L....

Laughing Lark Are you SERIOUS? A HAIRDRESSER produced this nonsense??? :O

    L.... L....

ozvoyager David’s original is rich and dramatic. This cover is shockingly mishandled, and I’m genuinely surprised Streisand didn’t select the oroducer more carefully! :O

  9. r.... o....

Bad cover imo I agree with Bowie itlacks the wonder the spirit the eccentricness know what I mean

  10. P.... G....

i don't think this version's outright bad, it's just boring for the period. it sounds like every other 70s ballad.

  11. f.... ....

Bowie was right, what a shameful cover.

    f.... ....

    Blow dried indeed 😲.

  12. J.... F....

What a horrible arrangement. Is that pianist suffering from block hand or something? ADT during the chorus is awful also and should've been left out - with a single vocal - her voice is strong enough for it. They tried too hard to emulate the Bowie version; No wonder this album is her least favourite work

  13. L.... ....

    No one tops Barbs... 🤗

    L.... ....

After that supermarket worthy diabolical effort she shouldve topped herself. Ibeeeza..? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    L.... ....

    Except Bowie of course. ;D

  14. N.... A....

Barbra is a great singer but this song is only "David's!

  15. A.... D....

After Bowie the best ever version

  16. R.... E....

    Beautiful!

  17. m.... c....

    Too Broadwayish. Thumbs down imp.

  18. J.... D....

Although not speaking about this particular song on the album, Streisand later said the "ButterFly" album was her least favorite of her career. I like her version, but certainly prefer Bowie's.

  19. W.... U....

It is beautiful, of course ! I guess that David had some difficulty to accept another reading than his on his song. Great artists are not always the more open- minded !

    W.... U....

I prefer that version to be honest, everything Streisand does turns to gold :)

  20. R.... ....

Bowie said that this cover was awful

    R.... ....

    WHY? I find it beautiful....

    R.... ....

Mugiwara no Renji He was right, too!

    R.... ....

    And he was correct.

    R.... ....

@Lucky Why, you ask? Listen to Bowie's original. There is no comparison.
