Barbra Streisand - Lied: Auf Dem Wasser Zu Singen Lyrics

Uber den Wipfeln des westlichen Haines
Winket uns freundlich der rotliche Schein;
Unter den Zweigen des ostlichen Haines
Sauselt der Kalmus im rotlichen Schein
Unter den Zweigen des ostlichen Haines
Sauselt der Kalmus im rotlichen Schein;

[Spoken]
Ach! They just don't write tunes like that anymore:
"Auf Dem Wasser zu Singen". It is really one of my
Favorites and I'm sure it's one of yours! In fact it it
So much fun to sing...Why don't you join in with me
For the last chorus and..er...you know, sing along with
Schubert?

[Singing]
Bis ich auf hoherem strahlendem Flugel
Selber entschwinde der wechselnden Zeit.
Sel...wonderful, wonderful..
Selber entschwinde der wechselnden Zeit...
Terrific!

Barbra Streisand Lied: Auf Dem Wasser Zu Singen Comments
  1. s.... ....

    Aye she is not bad at all in this. fair play

  2. J.... H....

    Too fast.

  3. W.... ....

    I believe the pianist was Claus Ogerman, who was the arranger / conductor / MD of the project.
    Why did Ogerman appoint himself as pianist? What hubris, what chutzpah. Didn't he have the objectivity to listen to himself and humbly admit that he was nowhere near the state-of-the-art accompanists of the day? If they could afford tens of thousands for the great cover photo of La Streisand then they coulda flown in Geoffrey Parsons (for example) from London. This Schubert could have been so much better, it's a wasted opportunity. The problem is not her 'chops' as a singer - it's the feeling of the absence of love for the music
    Barbra claims to be a classical fan - but it's hard to believe. There is no sense of the sweep, large phrases, poetry, mystery, grandeur of the song. It sounds as if neither of them love the music, or have known it for more than a day, or even know what the lyrics mean.

    The placement is necessary to execute such a repertoire...Sorry Streisand , the stile demands so...You transformed Schubert in someone else...the song lost all the color,the intention and it became a poor lullaby without voice...

  5. F.... F....

    Barbara, you made my day. Your Hatikvah and this singing one of my favorite Schubert makes life more fun like listening Vivaldi's Four Seasons in every dentist's office. I even renamed Schubert Sherbet.

  6. J.... A....

    Barbra is a great singer in popular music but this was a masive massacre!!!!!

  7. S.... ....

    no, no, no. you have to sing , not to spell or half-speak the lyrics....its better for an artist to stay in its own .....

  8. P.... R....

    Well it's very low in pitch but somehow it's hard to dislike this. The pianist certainly doesn't get full marks. Her German? Well I imagine that if Lotte Lenya had recorded this, it would sound similar. Interpretation? Dont see this as a "profound" song--either in music or poetic text. Schubert expresses the inexpressible--what more do you want? Maybe Barbra's whimsy has a valid point? If you want utter perfection no one sings this like Elisabeth Schumann IMHO.

  9. A.... I....

    Ogniuno nel suo cesso! E un horror!

  10. W.... P....

    Schubert as Schmaltz.

  11. E.... J....

    This isn't serious?!?! They both don't know anything about schuberts music... Streisand is a great singer of course, but this is just ridiculous... She doesn't even know what the lyrics mean... poor decision to publish this...

  12. B.... ....

    Streisand ought to have consulted a German-language coach to get at least her vowels and particularly her diphthongs right.

  13. J.... Y....

    Streisand is no Lucia Popp but singing one lower key, I give her a credit for making it sound pretty good in her way. But the greatest respect and love must be given to our young Franz Schubert who at 31, dies at the peak of his genius and creativity. There was no equal to Schubert as his exquisite creativity touching deep into our soul surpasses all other composers.

  14. g.... a....

    Barbra Streisand never recorded this song. please, correct it. Thanks.

    g.... a....

    gloria abras pou bullshit.. it right!!

    g.... a....

    Actually, the album cover shown "Classical Barbra" included quite a few unexpected classical pieces. This is absolutely Streisand, though it does NOT appear on the album. Whether this was a timing/tracks issue or she rejected it because of her self-critique, I don't know, but it's absolutely her.

    g.... a....

    @Stephen Jackson it does appear on the new remastered CD with two extra cuts that weren't on the lp in 1976.

  15. A.... B....

    She adds a completely new way of interpreting this marvelous song. You may like it or not - for me it's proof how great the music of Schubert is and it is a great pleasure to see that the song has inspired us for almost 200 years!

  16. F.... K....

    Weird!

    She is a great actress and one of the greatest popsingers, but this is NOT her repertory. She is´nt a classical trained singer and her german pronounciation is poor.

    F.... K....

    Franziska Kress agreed! As a classically trained singer who's also sung this song, she does make it sound so weird!!

    F.... K....

    I envy you! I also wished to be a classical singer, since I was a little girl, but I have no voice. Im a great Streisandfan, when she sings her music.

    F.... K....

    Franziska Kress well im from Germany and i thought for a Moment that she may could be from Germany but then I heard her accent. But it's not that much of a deal in my opinion

    This Schubert's song ("Singing on the water”) is my favorite.
    So I have been frequently listening to this song with Elly Ameling.
    After having listened to Barbra's singing, I thought that she had introduced an additional value to this song.

    Speaking briefly, I was completely enchanted by Barbra Streisand performances.
    And I am also astonished at Barbra’s enthusiasm toward the German classical songs.

  18. L.... H....

    Incredible - Schubert in the Catskills.

  19. J.... M....

    When has this lied ever been ...comic ?

    J.... M....

    +John e martin III When indeed, until now it seems.

    J.... M....

    John e martin III

    J.... M....

    John e martin III Exactly!

    J.... M....

    Apparently it is now. Oddly enough, hearing this, I feel more like crying than laughing.

  20. A.... ....

    Ach, es entschwindet mit tauigem Flügel
    Mir auf den wiegenden Wellen die Zeit;
    Morgen entschwinde mit schimmerndem Flügel
    Wieder wie gestern und heute die Zeit,
    Bis ich auf höherem strahlendem Flügel
    Selber entschwinde der wechselnden Zeit.

  21. A.... ....

    Über den Wipfeln des westlichen Haines
    Winket uns freundlich der rötliche Schein;
    Unter den Zweigen des östlichen Haines
    Säuselt der Kalmus im rötlichen Schein;
    Freude des Himmels und Ruhe des Haines
    Atmet die Seel im errötenden Schein.

  22. A.... ....

    Mitten im Schimmer der spiegelnden Wellen
    Gleitet, wie Schwäne, der wankende Kahn:
    Ach, auf der Freude sanftschimmernden Wellen
    Gleitet die Seele dahin wie der Kahn;
    Denn von dem Himmel herab auf die Wellen
    Tanzet das Abendrot rund um den Kahn.
