Barbra Streisand - I Think It's Going To Rain Today Lyrics

A pale dead moon in a sky streaked with grey.
Human kindness is overflowing,
And I think it's gonna rain today.

Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles,
The frozen smiles to chase love away.
Human kindness is overflowing,
And I think it's gonna rain today.

Lonely, lonely.
Tin can at my feet,
I think I'll kick it down the street.
That's the way to treat a friend.

Bright before me the signs implore me:
Help the needy and show them the way.
Human kindness is overflowing,
And I think it's gonna rain today.

Lonely, so lonely.
Tin can at my feet,
I think I'll kick it down the street.
That's the way to treat a friend.

Bright before me the signs implore me:
Help the needy and show them the way.
Human kindness is overflowing,
And I think it's gonna rain today.

Barbra Streisand I Think It's Going To Rain Today Comments
  1. R.... B....

    Wow.
    Lonely....o lonely...

  2. B.... W....

Barbra owns every song she sings - America's Treasure!

  3. F.... F....

    Bellísima canción..!!

  4. T.... S....

Dusty Springfield did the best interpretation of this hands down.

  5. g.... ....

One of the few examples of Ms. Streisand without musical embellishment, produced by Richard Perry.

  6. i.... d....

one of my favourite barbra covers, so beautiful and underrated

  7. T.... P....

This is an especially poignant rendition of Randy Newman's masterpiece. In 1971, its appropriately bare-boned piano accompaniment was performed by Newman himself.

  8. C.... K....

    love this

  9. m.... ....

Barbra Streisand sings this nicely, but my favorite remains that of Judy Collins, including her live version on YT.

  10. R.... S....

A lot of good and some great artists have sung this song, but no one comes close to Peggy Lee on her Natural Woman album.

    R.... S....

+Rick Scott ~ Norah Jones has the best version in my opinion after Newman's own version.

    R.... S....

    Bette Midler's is great

  11. m.... ....

    This is a beautiful rendition.

  12. D.... N....

i agree with ssstev.  Nina Simone did a wonderful rendition.  This one by Barbara Streisand is also one of the better versions i've listened to!

  13. T.... ....

Everybody but Randy (and even he has) hurries this song. The magic is in the mellow.

  14. b.... ....

    deeply moving

  15. C.... J....

How silly to argue over whose version is better! Randy Newman wrote the song, and everyone else is an interloper making bucks off his creation.

    C.... J....

@Colin Jordan How silly to argue ..... Randy Newman wrote it for those interlopers. He did not release his own version until several years after Judy Collins and others had made the song famous.

    C.... J....

Collin Jordan you do realize that songwriters compose songs for other artists to sing. Otherwise they are just entertaining themselves. Randy made a lot of money from all of these "interlopers." Guess only Gershwin had the right to sing "Summertime."

    C.... J....

Many great versions 'cos it's a great song, who wouldn't want to record it?

    C.... J....

According to an article in Rolling Stone ("Randy Newman: My Life in 15 Songs") this is actually Randy playing the piano on this track.

    C.... J....

Dear Colin Jordan, the interlopers are called "interpreters", the creators make bucks when they are paid for the royalties of their songs, and the more people sing them, the more they pay them: in fact, they could stop creating and continue charging while the singers are forced to tour and sell records if they do not want to die in indigence. This is the job of each one in the world of music. The only silly thing here is what you said.

  16. k.... ....

    I don't give a crap who sings it. It's a great song.

  17. b.... ....

No way! Clearly I am right and you are wrong.

    ;-)

  18. P.... B....

Looks like we are going to have to agree to disagree..

  19. b.... ....

I disagree. Dusty hurried the song, lost the nuance on some of the key changes. I didn't get the feeling that she even understood what the song was about. I thought Barbra nailed it, especially with the beautiful yet awkward bridge.

  20. B.... ....

Just saw the comment by Brian about Bette Midler. I think both versions are very listenable. Bette's is more emotional and it is, after all, an emotional song. But Barbara's is so crystal clear and exact. I can enjoy both completely.

  21. B.... ....

I have never been a fan of Barbara but this cover of this song showcases her talents very well. The clarity and precision of her voice is enviable. Very, very well done.

    B.... ....

Bropann You have never been a fan and this is the song that shows you her talent ???
What songs of hers have you heard ?
There are 100 songs by her so Much better than this

    B.... ....

    Bropann, I agree.

  22. M.... h....

Brilliant ---there is a reason why she is considered one of America's great vocalists - you just listened to the reason

  23. W.... S....

    It's perfect.

  24. B.... J....

Dusty Springfield's version is much better ! Streisand's is good but she hangs on to 'going' much too long ! I think that's what Randy was referring to but he let her sing it that way 'cause she's BARBRA ! . Dusty , you capture this song, just like your other Newman gem "I've Been Wrong Before" Dusty is the BEST !

  25. P.... B....

    Dusty Springfield's version is better.

  26. S.... ....

As others have said, there are many, many versions (40+ officially recorded IIRC) to fit all styles for this song. However, if I were honest with myself, I would think this was not only my least favorite version but my least favorite Barbara song. This sounds more like a spoken word song. Very, very meek compared to the talents of the crystal clear, strong voice she has. All I could muster was a very slow golf clap.

  27. t.... ....

    this is from 1971...pretty current

  28. s.... ....

Listened to it again and all i can say i agree with every word i wrote....

  29. s.... ....

I have listened to ALL the versions. Some are very good, Nina Simone is a standout...others are too much of a showtune, some are predictable.
Barbera takes this old song and makes it sound current and relevant.
Her phrasing makes every word polished and pure.
The piano is sparse and dramatic. This is a masterpiece and an amazing achievment to make this song a new modern classic. Well done Babs!

  30. E.... M....

The other tracks do leave the audio from the studio.

  31. m.... m....

Fantastic accompanist. I wonder if it was Randy Newman, himself?? It's SO difficult to play behind someone like this. You add just enough-never too much- but give the performance the glue and the spark, both. A good accompanist covers for a lousy singer and never overpowers a great one. Most people don't understand how difficult it is to accompany like this.

    m.... m....

mt mama it is randy Newman on the piano

  32. r.... ....

    Beautiful

  33. m.... ....

Why she is like no other artist..

  34. T.... E....

OMG Barbra is like wine, getting better and better, and I don't mean musically only, she's getting prettier and prettier as time goes by. What a fantastic album! Love ya!

  35. B.... E....

    thank you for that....

  36. L.... A....

Without a doubt the greatest female singer in american history anyone who disagrees has hearing problems this woman proves it over and over. This is pure brilliance

  37. S.... G....

What a treat to hear this recording. Takes me back to the day I was introduced to Barbra Streisand's beautiful voice. I was a guest of a gentleman and friend of the family and he had tired of my bouncy energetic "what can I do to amuse myself" state of discontent so he ordered me into a large chair where he told me to stay put and then installed a pair of headphones upon my head. And there she was. "I Got Plenty of Nothing." I was hooked for life. This recording is simply beautiful.

  38. a.... ....

    beautiful as always. love her

  39. b.... ....

I find it hard to beat the version by Randy Newman. Straight from the horse's mouth. Too gritty perhaps? I don't think so...

  40. S.... D....

She makes me want to take the elevator...

  41. r.... ....

    Glorious music and singing.

  42. I.... L....

nog steeds een mooie stem!!! zo zuiver !!!!

  43. N.... ....

...Anyone else who thinks of Roy Mustang? ...Perhaps? :D

  44. G.... ....

Great as you would expect but - I think - the best version is that of Barbara Dickson.

  45. T.... ....

    Play this at my Funeral

  46. r.... ....

Dusty Springfield released a beautiful rendition of this song, too. In my humble opinion, her soulful version is the best.

  47. E.... L....

THIS ALBUM (RELEASE ME) WILL BE WORTH BUYING IT.
TO RE-LISTEN TO HER CRYSTAL CLEAR VOICE IS FOOD FOR OUR SOULS.
LET'S ALL BUY 2 OR 3 COPIES OF THE ALBUM. YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

  48. r.... ....

Simply the Best Singer of the World. I love Barbra.

  49. M.... S....

That's the song's composer Randy Newman on piano. Great voice and great accompaniment.

  50. r.... ....

    But beautiful.

  51. W.... B....

Way back when, after Barbra's "What About Today?" album was announced and "Alfie" listed as one of the songs I began doing an impression of her doing that song. I did a great Barbra. But when the album came out I was surprised to find how Barbra interpreted "Alfie" was not what I had assumed it would be. It was a good lesson. She has always been very easy to imitate, but in fact any imitation is a reduction of what she does. She takes every song and recreates it with fresh insights.

  52. E.... L....

Will we ever listen to a voice like this ? Maybe in another Universe.

  53. M.... ....

Once we hear a song by Barbra, she owns it. Period.

  54. e.... ....

    I agree

  55. E.... L....

What a splendid interpretation ! Barbra, you're a woman extraordinaire. I can't stop listening to it over and over again.

  56. M.... R....

    Glorious!!!

  57. B.... E....

don't disagree but some people love to turn everything into a contest. Sure a person may prefer one over the other and I agree with your preference but that doesn't mean other versions bad... anyway let's enjoy this great woman and her voice

  58. L.... B....

Though it is certainly true that both versions COULD be good, the way Bette's interpretation of the notes hit my ears kind of make my upper lip curl.

On another note, Barbra's notes have the exact opposite impact on me. Simple, flowing, breezy and clear. Not a sour note. Beautiful.

  59. E.... L....

Sometimes it sounds like a negro spiritual song, and sometimes a country ballad. Very pretty indeed. The album must be awesome.

  60. d.... ....

I just per-ordered...can't wait. This is the Streisand I'll buy in the 21st Century - Streisand from the 20th Century.

I swore I'd stop spending money on the brand years ago - here's a little fuel for the jet, darlin'. Can't wait for all the new movies!

  61. f.... ....

    It's all good.

  62. d.... j....

her voice is so crystal clear and the pitch and phrasing is sublime... i ever wonder why she did not release this beautiful masterpiece... pure barbra...

  63. u.... ....

Better listen to the official video by Columbia Records. The sound is MUCH better than in this video.

  64. B.... E....

The artwork for this album is inspred... those eyes could belong to no one else... was a bit disapponted in the album cover for What Matter's Most, though loved the CD

  65. L.... B....

    FUCKING...AWESOME!?

  66. B.... E....

The competition merchants are out, saying Better Midler's version is better. So I listened. Better Midler's version is very good, as one would expect. It is possible to enjoy multiple interpretations without feeling that one is better. Different is not necessarily better. I am biased, but I think I slightly prefer the purity of Barbra's rendition and love that the studio exchanges have been left it. Adds a lot. Hope other tracks have that too.

  67. B.... E....

It is truly wonderful.. heard it yesterday and when I got up today had to hear it first thing. I bought the Stoneyend album when it was first released...yes I am THAT old... and it brought me right back to the first listen of that.. the vocal is pure clear and raw... wonderful

  68. V.... S....

This song is already the most played song on my iPod. Love it!
