Band, The - Up On Cripple Creek Lyrics

When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go?
Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico
To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie, girl that I once knew
She told me just to come on by, if there's anything she could do

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go
She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show
The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one
When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough she had won

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half
She tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh
Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see
That's when that little love of mine, dips her doughnut in my tea

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box
She said, "I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk"
Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet
And I swore as I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Now there's a flood out in California and up north it's freezing cold
And this living on the road is getting pretty old
So I guess I'll call up my big mama, tell her I'll be rolling in
But you know, deep down, I'm kind of tempted to go and see my Bessie again

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Truth. How fortunate I am to be able to hear this, to feel it, to understand it. My life has meaning because of songs like this.

  3. F.... P....

    What the F has happened.

  4. c.... ....

I remember I used to play this song for my son all the time in Minnesota. My son was a toddler back then. He loved it. I loved the song too. We played the song over and over without knowing who were the singers. We just enjoyed the song. Later on, I did some research on the song and found out that the band was called the Band and the lead singer was Levon Helm. I found out that Levon was an American and Robert Robertson, the lead guitarist was Canadian. I fall in love with the Band, especially this song. I still listen to it now. You need to listen to a story told by Robert Robertson about Bob Dylan and how they toured together. It is a wonderful story.

  5. J.... W....

The 21 people they gave a thumbs down, must be wrapped fans, and think every rapper knows them, just because they know they make, and who they sleep with. Bunch of dumbasses

  6. D.... H....

We always wonder who has just that special thing about them that just says, YEP THAT'S THE THING RIGHT THERE: Mr. Levon Helm: -Bruce Springsteen

Timing seems out. Sounds and feels slowed.

Robbie Robertson, Don Henley, Jeff Lynne, and Carlos Santanna were at a place I used to work. The level of women these guys have forgotten they’ve been with is more than anything most people can imagine. Walking around that place was like what I imagine the _PlayBoy_ mansion is like; tens everywhere! And they were _graded_ into categories - the lesser grade women going with less important people. I was told that Henley was particularly into the most beautiful women - taking four at a time; having them brought to this place from _The Strip, Venice Beach, West Covina,_ or even _Orange County._ And the grade of coke - I’m told 😉 - was off the charts. The coke was basically in the streets of _Tijuana_ in the morning, into a white _Toyota_ truck, and up these cats’ noses by the afternoon; ultra-ultra high grade! What most people don’t understand is that when you’re at these cats’ level, you can have _any_ chick... think on that. Think of the hottest chick ever. I was told many years later that this was the night Stevie Nicks told the LA Times that if Tom Petty asked her to leave Fleetwood Mac to join the Heartbreakers she would have. It was a truly epic time and the day after, following the return of Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran became an Islamic Republic and 63 Americans were taken hostage in the American Embassy in Tehran, changing everything. I learned a lot of important lessons that night - how meaningless my silly little life seems being so close to greatness - and Robbie Robertson became my _idol_

2019, anyone? This music will live forever. Love you, Levon.

    L.... L....

Lisa Lee about to be 2020 and still rocking the band

  10. D.... ....

A great way to start off Thanksgiving Day.

  11. O.... A....

The carnal glint in Levon's delivery, Robbie's breath-bating fills, the surge of voices into the chorus...the smiles at the end that say: we nailed it!

  12. D.... H....

Some good-ole Canadian boys doing it up right ....with a great American drummer/singer taking the lead on this one !!!

  13. j.... d....

I really wish rock music wasn't dying and we still had bands like The Band around.

  14. T.... S....

That fill at 2:59 may be the greatest of all time.

    T.... S....

You are a man of very good taste.

  15. Z.... M....

Dude, the amount of coke in these guys’ systems could kill a nation. Love it. Also, what’s Deniro doing playing in a band. I know him and Scorsese are tight, but hot damn!

  16. m.... i....

    I am the Cripple Creek.

    Still jammin In 2019

  22. C.... D....

    Danko is a genius!!

  23. C.... L....

Robbie Robertson was so hot back in the day

  24. R.... J....

With all the fake accents among American and British singers, it does my heart good to hear Levon. He sounds exactly like precisely where he's from.

  25. g.... j....

Druing the whole concert, three front men --Robbie, Rick and Leven-- are dominating the screen play. I hope I could have seen  many more performances of Richard and Gurth.

    g.... j....

Actually the 3 frontmen was considered to be rick, levon, and Richard since they had the best voice. But the whole band agreed that Richard had the best voice.

    g.... j....

I'd agree the concert didn't do justice to Richard &, particularly, Garth. As a musician Garth is just on another planet, but there's not much visual about his brilliance. As I've said, before, Garth weaves all the sound together. Richard was a force of nature before the Grand Marnier took it's toll; by the time of the Waltz, his voice was pretty well blown.

  28. S.... Z....

WHERE ON EARTH DOES ONE FIND SUCH TALENT NOWADAYS?

  29. h.... ....

Puts her doughnut in my tea. Very cool, indeed.

  30. l.... b....

One of the best songs ever

  31. F.... F....

    Amazing!

  32. M.... T....

10 people didn’t have any donuts put in their tea

    M.... T....

No tea in the first place!

    M.... T....

Magnolia Trees in the Meadow now 23 what dummies. Fantastic music. Levon you raised Loretta Lynn good.

  33. M.... ....

    God I love Robbie Robertson.

    M.... ....

Mindrolling Too bad he was a snake and screwed over the rest of the band taking all the money.

    M.... ....

I guess somebody has to love the flimflam men

  34. J.... G....

As a person born in 1983, I'm within the ASININE 'Millenial' range of birth years. I hate Hip Hop and Rap. I love this song. I love a decade that started and began before the 80's. This song is so 70's! I LOVE IT! LOL!

  35. P.... K....

Nine complete fools do not like this :-)

  36. S.... D....

Did Robbie know his mic was cut?? Lol

    S.... D....

@Saturnalia Danko Listen closer. Do you even know what Robbie sounds like?

    S.... D....

@Saturnalia Danko Also, you can't hear Richard? Really????

    S.... D....

His mic was not off! He also sang a lead part during evangeline cause manuel screw it up !

    S.... D....

I'd saw the various intros pretty much put the lie to this old claim, although Marty might have mixed Robbie's vocals down a bit.

  37. A.... P....

When the LAST WALTZ was released, I dutifully went to watch it everyday. And, I carry out the duty here now. ..

  38. K.... F....

The band is one of the world's great creations

  39. A.... H....

The thing Levon does at 3:40 is just ridiculous and one of those moves that only the drummer who is singing gets to pull.. rad

  40. M.... G....

What does he mean by”put her donut in my tea?”

    M.... G....

    Miss Gender- ..."Tee Hee"!

    M.... G....

    Have sexual intercourse

    M.... G....

    He likes donuts.

    M.... G....

    Michael Luther Lol. Indeed

  41. T.... M....

The Band, the only group with the talent, and balls, to name themselves THE BAND!

    T.... M....

You got that right they were AWSOME! Eric Clapton said once talking about his band Cream, we thought we were the bees knees of rock, but when I heard the Band playing live I wanted to quit Cream and join the Band, but the band didn't even let Clapton join... daaammnnn!

  42. Y.... t....

Pure gold.what if they got our today musical equipments back than!!woo.
Thanks to y'all Levon,Rick,Richard RIP music up in heaven would be so great now

  43. R.... S....

"I sure wish I could yodel" Great improv sung with passion Levon Helm was at his finest in this concert, proving if any more proof was needed, what a great drummer he really was. Man, I miss THE BAND. Dylan must have pinched himself when he found these rascals.

  44. M.... L....

    Memories. Was a student then.

  45. j.... c....

The Last Waltz, one of the best concerts of all time.

    j.... c....

I watched the movie in a cinema two times a day for 7 days in 1979..

    j.... c....

    You’re damn right it is

    j.... c....

I would say it was the most perfect live performance of all time ever captured on film, and the dance by Fleetwood Mac a close second...

  46. J.... Q....

This sounded incredible in an old movie venue ; I'm grateful to have heard this in one.

  47. m.... ....

Levon's hot, but Rick is hotter (guess that should be was)

  48. M.... C....

I met Levon at a club on Pico in LA.... he didnt know me from Adam -- maybe I asked a good question, I dont know. He was so cool -- a good dude.

    M.... C....

    thanks for sharing that

    M.... C....

I'm officially jealous. RIP, Levon, a true Southern man

  49. Z.... J....

Why are there only three comments on this amazing video? Being only twenty four I really wish I was alive to see things like this man

    Z.... J....

Yeah! I second that. By the way, I'm 44 y.o.

    Z.... J....

From a life-long Band fan, I'll opinethat you're wise beyond your years, Zack. IMHO, though, I will say this song was perhaps the best performance of theirs I've ever heard or seen video of. Truly a BAND of talented musicians. The 1st song of what turned out to be something like 4 hours on stage, they weren't holding anything back.

  50. T.... L....

    Just watched on axis

  51. P.... W....

One of my favs by these guys, love this live version!!

    P.... W....

    I wish I could YODEL!
