Band, The - Twilight Lyrics

Over by the wildwood
Hot summer night
We lay in the tall grass
til the mornin' light

If I had my way I'd never
get the urge to roam
A young man serves his country
and an old man guards the home

Never gave a second thought
Never crossed my mind
What's right and what's not
I'm not the judgin' kind

I could take the darkness oh
Storms in the skies
But we all got certain trials
burnin' up inside

Don't send me no distant salutations
or silly souvenirs from far away
Don't leave me alone in the twilight
Twilight is the loneliest time a day

Don't put me in a frame upon the mantel
'Fore memories turn dusty old and grey
Don't leave me alone in the twilight
Twilight is the loneliest time a day

Is it weird i prefer robbie singing this song with just the piano? yeah he doesn't have the best voice but it fits when he sings this.

    M.... ....

+Memorex996 well don't prefer. It's just a really good version imo

    M.... ....

    +Memorex996 Where can I find this version with Robbie singing? I would appreciate a lot if you could tell me. Thank you;

    M.... ....

Ricardo Emídio type twilight song sketch and it'll be there. Its one with them playing the last waltz

  16. h.... ....

Wow, this version is so much different than what I'm used to hearing. I'm used to the alternate track with Levon and Rick sharing vocals. I'd say I prefer that one. It's more solemn and the vibe fits the lyrics better.

    h.... ....

@handidrummed It's funny you say that because I was always more used to this one

  17. D.... K....

Does anyone write songs like this anymore? Is it that nobody these days want to hear this kind of music. Social commentary in contemporary music is a dying art... and there's so much to write about! Or is it that music is no longer the means of reflecting the issues of the day?

    D.... K....

    Give us a try :)

The Vietnam Veterans got a bad rap . I am 56 yrs young and missed the War . But I had 2 brothers served and my father was in Korea . I thank God for all the veterans past and present and I salute you . Thank You For your Service .God Bless You .

    It's Rick, it's great!

  23. I.... F....

This is an amazing song! I love the harmonies between Rick & Manuel on this. Rest in peace Rick, Manuel & Levon!

  24. t.... ....

The first version has all the singers taking a turn at singing lead, so I do prefer that one, too. But thanks for uploading this one!

  25. a.... m....

Super great tune! I enjoy these harmonies. END THE WAR, live the love, love the living, PEACE, PEACE PEACE

    where my soul was murdered

  27. A.... ....

True. I still like the other version better, but I'm not going to be an idiot and try to convince you it IS better. After all, it's just my opinion and not a fact :)
I can't stand people that try to do that. Glad to know this version does get love because I do enjoy it. The other version just stirs me more.

  28. A.... G....

    ♬ ☮ ♪ Thanks for the music, man ♥

  29. A.... ....

@iangcunningham I actually prefer that version. This almost seems too perky for the mood.

  30. M.... ....

    @iangcunningham - Absolutely agree.Its a great version

  31. s.... ....

    @scottjackson67 Thanks for the info!

  32. S.... J....

@shango02005 It's tough to tell since there's two versions of "Twilight - (Single Version)" floating around there, but basically this was on a single and eventually was on the compilation album Islands. The other version of "Twilight - Early Alternate Version" is on the album Northern Lights - Southern Cross. Although I think both were added as CD re-releases and weren't on the original albums.

  33. S.... S....

This song is all about the jungles of Nam and how we treated our returning Vets.Rick Danko RIP

  34. H.... t....

Jerry Lee Lewis does a beautiful version of this song on Last Man Standing.

  40. S.... S....

Rick Dankos voice is one of the greatest of all time

Hey quickhick, thank you so much for this . . .not so much Islands (which wasnt so much of an album as it was a way to get out of their contract with Capitol), yet Cahoots is quite possibly one of the most underrated albums of all time. But just an awesome thing it is to see all this so well organized. See my channel, its the closest Ive gotten so far to your hometown . . .Peace . . .
