Band, The - Long Distance Operator Lyrics

Long-distance operator,
Place this call, it's not for fun.
Long-distance operator,
Please, place this call, you know it's not for fun.
I gotta get a message to my baby,
You know, she's not just anyone.

There are thousands in the phone booth,
Thousands at the gate.
There are thousands in the phone booth,
Thousands at the gate.
Ev'rybody wants to make a long-distance call
But you know they're just gonna have to wait.

If a call comes from Louisiana,
Please, let it ride.
If a call comes from Louisiana,
Please, let it ride.
This phone booth's on fire,
It's getting hot inside.

Ev'rybody wants to be my friend,
But nobody wants to get higher.
Ev'rybody wants to be my friend,
But nobody wants to get higher.
Long-distance operator,
I believe I'm stranglin' on this telephone wire.

maybe because we lost the phone booth and can call anywhere your crappy cell service can connect, means we have no cone of privacy anymore and we have no more privacy, which sucks

  6. S.... a....

I can not get a chance to did not say a word about this one ☝️ Simply to me this one is the very best of the band ❤️🤙✌️🤘

  7. d.... d....

Here's Sid Griffin's analysis of who's playing on this track...
"Manuel – vocal, harmonica; Robertson – guitar; John Simon – piano; Hudson – organ; Danko – bass; Helm – drums. Recorded in Los Angeles, February 28, 1968.

This song was written by Dylan, and he had performed it as early as December 4, 1965, at a concert in Berkeley, California—soon after the Hawks had started to back him on his rock and roll tour. Dylan and the Band ran through this number in Woodstock in 1967, although the Basement Tapes version is an outtake from the 1968 Music from Big Pink sessions. Gill calls it 'half an idea fleshed out to a riff' that is a funky blues extension of the classic Chuck Berry song 'Memphis, Tennessee.' The released version has had one verse cut; a longer version of the same take appears as a bonus track on the 2000 reissue of Music from Big Pink."

  12. J.... S....

It's Richard Manuel singing. You can tell this quite easily by the fact that it is Richard Manuel singing.

    J.... S....

Danko. Rick. Yeah? Other world cut. The WTF of this joint. So odd.

    J.... S....

I thought it was Danko, also.

  13. S.... a....

    I love this song

  15. J.... S....

    Bruhhhhhh

    J.... S....

This is not a Springseen concert! ;)

    J.... S....

    You sure?

  16. s.... n....

    Nice bluesy tune.
Let there be no doubt: Richard Manuel on vocals.
Virtually no doubt: Robbie on guitar.

    s.... n....

Common man, don't give Robbie credit. He's by far the worst member of the band.

    s.... n....

Disagree, he's one of my favourite guitar players.

    s.... n....

Despite what one may think of Robbie as a person (that's a whole argument in its own right) there is no doubt he's one of the greatest guitar players to have lived in our life time.

  17. b.... m....

Richard Manuel is the vocalist and plays the the harmonica.  The only person playing on the song that wasn't a member of the band is  John Simon on the piano.

  18. M.... P....

http://youtu.be/TRSHFpo2mO4 For the most excellent Bloomfield playing on a version of this song by James Cotton

  19. W.... B....

Dont remember this one, hard to get to thee double album of 1975.

    W.... B....

Wild Boar got it on vinyl for 15 bucks

    W.... B....

    Thanks man!

  20. c.... ....

Richard Manual's voice used to sound a little more nosy and sonore than Danko's. I do think it's Danko here.

    c.... ....

    It's Richard

  21. c.... ....

In my opinion it's really hard to tell if it's Rick or Richard singing here. One minute I think it's one, then the other. Very hard, but it's definitely Robbie Robertson on guitar here. Why would it be Mike Bloomfield? He may have visited the Big Pink like Van Morrisson and others probably did, but Robbie was there all the time. Chances are... I also recognize his wonderfull cold sound. Great song from one hell of a great album. Should be released at a fair price though!

    c.... ....

Definitely Richard Manuel. Listen to "cold comes from Louisiana". As for Bloomfield, well, he certainly is on this smoking version by James Cotton.

  22. M.... N....

rick danko is the singer.on this

    M.... N....

That's for surely Richard there buddy..

    M.... N....

Richard Manuel signs this song not Rick Danko.....Please

  23. d.... ....

Pretty sure that's Mike Bloomfield playing guitar

    d.... ....

    I'm certain it's Robbie Robertson.....some people #smh

    d.... ....

Definitely not Bloomfield. Total Robbie tone (listen to his stuff with John Hammond; Robbie could play this stuff). As for bloomers, he plays on the James Cotton version.

  24. N.... R....

    this'll be take 400

  25. Z.... P....

    Smowinging lyrics metric art.

  26. C.... S....

This is certainly a mixed bag.
