Band, The - Last Of The Blacksmiths Lyrics
Who robbed the cradle, who robbed the grave
Who's the one that asked to be saved
No, wo-wo-wo no answer came
I moved to the country that cried of shame
I left my home and found a name
Have mercy, cried the blacksmith
How're you gonna replace human hands
Found guilty, said the judge
For not being in demand
Frozen fingers at the keyboard
Could this be the big reward
No, no answer came
Brought up everybody to see for themselves
No, nobody could explain
Dead tongue said the poet
To the daughter of burlesque
Cocteau, Van Gogh and Geronimo
They used up what was left
Cry wolf, said the martyr
I don't believe I'm alive
You're the hero, said the mute
And you're bound to survive

Band, The Last Of The Blacksmiths Comments
my fav richard manuel bless you
Some decent chord changes buried in there but mostly a mess. Too much heroin.
RICHARD!
Cahoots received abrasive criticism when it was released in 1971. Robbie Robertson admitted to having problems with writing songs for the record. Still a fine album
This song is amazing and insanely underrated.
R.M forever rest in peace
very underrated song
Yeah... It's not just blacksmiths though... they're replacing human hands every day... very sad.
Aaron: The solo is Garth wailing on soprano sax - I recall seeing them do this live, and he just picked it up and sailed!
Where was it you saw them do this?
One of my favorite Band tracks; the way Richard sings the "Have mercy, cried the blacksmith..." line just gives me goosebumps.
Don't gang beat me but this sounds more like Rick danko singing... I'm sure it is Richard Manuel but sounds like Rick in the last waltz
what the hell is this solo. i love it. but what is it! garth!!!!!
Goddamn Richard Manuel just lets it rip. I really love all of his vocals on this album, and every album!
I love Cahoots-unerrated classic
im spong man if you gots problems come at me bro
@ASelinger You got that right. He is still my favorite singer of all time.
Unfortunately, it isn't that this music doesn't exist today. It does. Under the radar. Music is defined by its era. In the case of The Band - it defined the years it existed. There's an album called Largo features Taj Mahal doing a song called "Freedom Ride" with members of the Hooters and I think Garth Hudson too. The Low & Sweet Orchestra, recent Little Feat. Check No Depression site for a band: Red River. If you can find The Palladino's "Travelling Dark" or the duo Lowen & Navarro. They try.
Are the solos horns or like a double guitar track?
There's nothing better than Richard Manuel.
@fireflyzip Sadly music like the Band doesn't exist today.
A rare gem from The Band! Pretty much forgotten and definitely underrated! Ass kickin song!
