Band, The - Back To Memphis Lyrics
If I never saw you
You'd still live in my dreams
Calling out from stages
And music magazines
If I were a painter
Carved out of matches
But broken out of stone
Taken from the fire of your fiddle
Words of unspoken, blinding truth
If I couldn't see it, I was lost in my youth
But I'm going back to Memphis - after you.
If I could have seen you
With blood on your bones
Poison in your fingers
But music in your soul
Taught me everything I know
But now we are your children
Your flowers in the snow
But all you ever wanted was to see the heart of the city, oh
And all you ever got was hand to mouth
So I know you'll be walking for a long, long time
Cause you're going back to Memphis - heading South.
Brothers till the night came
And whispered in the pines
Tempting me with secrets
To play a game with time
Now I feel you in the walls
And I know you're in the air
And it's just like I can touch you
You're living everywhere
But all you ever wanted was to be in the heart of the city, oh
And all you ever got was handed out
So I know we'll be walking for a long, long time
Cause we're going back to Memphis - heading South
Going back to Memphis - heading South.

Is there any instrument with strings that Tom doesn't know how to play?
Timeless 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Grande...grandissimo Levon!!!
Good drummer here. Terry Cagle?
One of my favorite songs they do. awesome
Wow that cat in the aisle sure can dance 💃
What makes u think its Robertson? Btw he is not an actor/movie star either
https://youtu.be/z6bkoP5ARUI
Here's a link to the movie he stared in.
The movie is called Carny. He played patch along with Gary Bucesy and Jodi Foster just to name a few.
@John Ross oh yeah Im aware of that bc of his biography but I wouldnt call him a movie star. He had a bit part. What I really want to know is where did u get the info he. is the cat dancing in the video? You cant see his face. Btw, Im not afraid of looking stupid w an anonymous comment here on utube. So wheres the info?
Bit part? He was in practically every sceen. Obviously you haven't seen the film. If you star in a movie then your a movie star. Give the man the credit he earned and deserves. 11 films appearing as an actor, narrator or performer. No not Clint Eastwood but a movie star none the less.
I suppose levon wasn't a movie star either with his 19 films. All bit parts I guess they don't count.
@John Ross hey look, man I dont wanna argue w u. If u think he is a star good for u but why then do u think he has a bit part in this video of dancing? He's a great songwriter/guitarist so I dont think he would be dancing in the shadows giving Levon and the guys the music spotlight. He was not that generous w the BAND members. Perhaps u should read his memoir "Testimony" and Levon's "This Wheel is on Fire" Obviously u have no info on who is dancing. This is a silly discussion. Lets say u won and be done w it
Thanks for such a sweet trip down memory lane ❤️ ❤️!
here I go again hahhhahahaahaa
62 years old and still cant sit still when levon and the band plays this boogie music, lovin life 2019
levon , missing you and your music .
Thinking about a long ride to Woodstock, visit their graves next week...
What a pity...it's not possible any more, but at least we got these videos, etc. for young people to show how was it when good musicians used old style drums, guitars, etc.
Damn I miss Levon. He was the F'ing man!!
wonderfull!!
Levon, man we miss you!!! Great great musician!!
No, I was dancing in the AISLE ... and I had my PJs under my clothes ....
Robbie
“ The Band “.........
Some might agree ?
Maybe not ?
The perfect artist line up , all coming together......?
And when each of them ,
was in their OWN grove .....
All different.
YET.......
They somehow enhance each other’s abilities........?
SO .........
Does that just “ HAPPEN “ ?
A happenstance sort of thing ?
One of the great groups of all time. Love Levon Helm's voice.
levon is an amazing musician
This is when The Band integrated The Cate Bros. with them! I knew them all well.
That ain't "The Band". Get your sh*t together.
Just coz Levon and Rick Danko don't make it the Band.
...but you add Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson and yes that indeed makes this "The Band"!
is that Donald "duck" on bass?
No 😑
every time I the band boogie, I start shaking like Elvis...hahahaahahhaha just cant help it..
RIP Levon a great loss of musical talent, you will B missed
Still lovin' Levon in 2019

My husband played his guitar along with this last night and TRIED to mock the bass player's moves. I never laughed so hard in all my life! I wish I had videoed it.
off cours this bass player suck!!
Why don't they play this on the radio?
Hard to find much good music on the radio
Because music directors and Djs don't actually know music.
The Band made some of the best music !
First time i have seen Levon Helm without a beard, has a bit of a willem dafoe look about him
Rockit afire!!!! Best way to go!!!!!
Sorry, in comparison with the original Band version this is rushed. Compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbJgx1PKxkk
garth , emmanuel, rick and everyone..
That dude dancing in the aisle at about the 3:00 min. mark was having his own party! Great tune.
Kevin Willis he was having a great time
Dude dancing in the back was priceless !!!
No doubt! Looks like he was having a BLAST!
Look like Receiver big check
that IS Robbu
Members of the Cate Brothers Band, like Levon, from Arkansas. Earl Cate on lead guitar, Ron Eof on bass, and Levon's nephew, Terry Cagle, on drums. Ernie Cate, Earl's twin, wearing a cowboy hat, is seen briefly on keys. Levon toured a lot with the Cate Brothers after The Band broke up. (For what it's worth, Earl's a better player than Robbie...)
no way I could sit still while that was playin' lovin'Levon
Only if you are dead.
Levon rocks, as usual.
The lead guitar player is Earl Cate, bass player is Ron Eoff, and the drummer is Levon's nephew, Terry Cagle, all from the inimitable Cate Brothers Band, who accompanied Levon on many occasions. All Arkansans!
John Sheffield thanks so much for the info John;Im enjoying this music so much, having a private Band /Levon and friends fest.cant keep from jumping around!
Looks more like Rick Danko to me.
Even though I just noticed Rick on Stage.... lol
Earle Cate on that guitar
Chuck and Levon will jam together on this Sunday Rock n' Roll Heaven venue!!!
That's Incredible💖
I still swear that's Robbie Robertson dancing in the isle at 2:51
It probably is lol
Somehow I just don't think Robbie would move like that..too reserved
HAHAHAHA!!!
MY KIND OF BLUES. Turn up your speakers and enjoy the ride.
Can't go wrong with that jam
keeping Chuck Berry alive and well
It's a double live album recorded on their tour in Japan 1983.
That's Rick Danko on rhythm guitar. They billed themselves as The Band and put out an album with the Cate brothers replacing Robbie.
@James Lumpkin I agree, maybe I wouldn't be quite so hateful towards Robertson, but I do think it was a cruddy thing he did. He seems to have had a huge ego and had it stroked by Scorsese etc. These four guys and the musicians they worked with made some wonderful music after Robbie left them. I'm not decrying Robbie as a musician - the five guys together created alchemy, but on his own I find him a tad bland whereas The Band stayed rootsy.
+James Lumpkin you were blessed to have met him to me he is and always will be the greatest drummer and musician that ever lived outside of Freddie Mercury and he couldn't drum
And Garth!
Sorry, but that's not The Band, but it IS Levon and Richard Manuel.
And no, Robbie wouldn't have been onstage with Levon at that time in either man's life. Levon didn't want anything to do with Robbie after the Last Waltz--and I heard and saw this direct from Lee.
don't blame him
and if you look closely....there is also Rick Danko!
and Garth Hudson!
My understanding was that Levon was in a sedated coma when Robbie visited, so Robbie made peace , but with his own conscience
Mitchell Lopate Levon is on record saying Last Waltz was a rip-off. Anyway, Levon was a past master in whatever he did; Drums, mandolin, harmonica, his own voice all turn magical. An incredible man! A gentle man as were Garth and Rick
If anyone here hasn't watched "Classic Albums: The Band" here on Youtube, I urge you to do so..BRILLIANT documentary, with fantastic interviews and insight into the making of the album. RIP Rick, Levon and Richard.
The Band were so amazing....all original members gone except for Garth and Robbie.. R.I.P. Levon, Richard, and Rick!!
Levon, Levon Helm great!
Robbie is one hellava mover
hehe )
