Band, The - Atlantic City Lyrics

Well, they blew up the Chicken Man in Philly last night
And they blew up his house, too
Down on the boardwalk they're ready for a fight
Gonna see what them racket boys can do

Now there's trouble busin' in from outta state
And the D.A. can't get no relief
Gonna be a rumble on the promenade
And the gamblin' commissioner's hangin' on by the skin of his teeth

Everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies some day comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

Well, I got a job and I put my money away
But I got the kind of debts that no honest man can pay
So I drew out what I had from the Central Trust
And I bought us two tickets on that Coast City bus

Everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies some day comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

Now our luck may have died and our love may be cold
But with you forever I'll stay
We'll be goin' out where the sand turns to gold
But put your stockings on, 'cause it might get cold

Oh, everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies some day comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

Now I've been a-lookin' for a job, but it's hard to find
There's winners and there's losers and I'm south of the line
Well, I'm tired of gettin' caught out on the losin' end
But I talked to a man last night, gonna do a little favor for him

Well, everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies some day comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Oh, meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Oh, meet me tonight in Atlantic City

They blew up the chicken man in Philly last night...he was a famous mobster from Philly they put a pipe bomb on his porch filled with nails, his son got revenge on them too but he was killed as well. He was called the chicken man because he had chicken pox scars on his face that never healed. I can't think of his name right now but I'll find it for anyone that enjoys reading about organized crime.

Going to see the Last Waltz Tour tonight at the Tower Theatre in Philly. Just listening to these songs that seem to get better as they age, like a fine wine. So thankful I got to see them live- @ MSG in 1975 with Bob Dylan. The Band's 45 separate set was the highlight of that show. Road tested and tighter than Levon's snare drum.

MIss you Beek, Rick and Levon. RIP...

    M.... S....

I have heard a song that sounds just like this but not same words I think it is a county song as if some one stole it

  29. A.... H....

  49. I.... W....

One of the best bands ever

  50. b.... s....

    holy fuck....

  51. c.... z....

    The Band do Bruce.

  52. R.... A....

The Chicken Man is a hidden reference to Robbie Robertson. LOL

    R.... A....

Rolando Aponte I thought it was about testa

    R.... A....

@Corey Barnett It is about Testa. Wth would Springsteen write about Robbie? Bruce was not involved in all the inter Band drama. Bruce wrote the song as a protest against Mob inroads into AC in the late 70s. The Band do a great cover, but this is a song about a small time hood in Jersey. Sopranos pre-Sopranos...

  53. P.... M....

Music from a time and place that if i had a time machince thats where id be heading..

  54. D.... A....

Cany find this on vinyl, sucks

  55. L.... M....

  56. E.... T....

Levon and Rick harmonizing and cant forget Richard

  63. i.... n....

Fuck you chtisty are you confederate fucker bob no piss off fat ass

  64. N.... C....

This is up there with the best covers of Springsteen songs though this doesn't top Rage Against The Machine's cover of 'The Ghost of Tom Joad"

  65. W.... S....

Best group of musicians ever assembled. Appropriately named "The Band".

  66. C.... ....

True insight into America. The gambling commissioner, of whatever sort you think you're dealing with, is always hanging on by the skin of his teeth. And ***there is*** going to be a rumble on the promenade. So watch out. He's going to be swamped by the endless corruption that produces debt no honest man can pay and keeps us all south of the line. But that's nothing compared to the personal strength made possible between a man and a woman. Everything dies and that's a fact, but maybe everything that dies some day comes back.

  67. P.... U....

    I love The Band!

  68. D.... R....

I grew up & lived 10 city blocks from the chickens mans house I was around 15,16 years old at the time when it blew up one of my ex-girlfriends was friends with his kid

  69. M.... L....

One of top all time bands

  70. M.... W....

Those years in Woodstock -- Van Morrison, Maria Muldaur, Dylan, The Band (to name a few) -- what a collection of talent!

    Brh

  71. T.... ....

This song calms me down, but it also wants me to cry.
It's why i always come back from time to time so i can find relief.

  72. S.... D....

The Band seemed so often to have a lot of obstacles to contend with in their career. Back in the day there wasnt 24 hour news on anything and everything like today. So the fans didn't know exactly what was going on with them when theyd stop touring and more or less just dissapear.. In the case of The Band they'd disappear from magazines, radio and then all of a sudden they'd re-appear. REGROUPED and back they went to writeing and touring again. . I'm a fan and love their music. has anyone ever published the complete history of this dynamic group of musicians and song writers? if yes who, what and where? The Band has fans in every corner of this planet. I miss them so much and hearing about them. . Id love to see them one more time before Its my time to say goodbye to life. the music of The Band has always been as good and on the same level as the Beatles and the other top groups of the era. i sure hope they alll know that. to me their music has always been better than all of them. their songs stay relevant and are so relatable to so many people. I wish then well. an AZ. Fan.

  73. M.... ....

Bruce's lyrics and Levon's voice. Doesn't get better!

  74. S.... D....

    Laughable.

  81. N.... F....

Sitting on the porch listing to one of the most talented bands of all time

  82. S.... H....

When I go to a higher place, I want this song playing.

  83. J.... M....

This is such a good version. I love Garth's accordion, and Levon's singing always gets to the heart of the lyric. Rick's harmonies are just perfect, too. Great song.

  84. J.... H....

Just love it like the rest of their legacy

  85. S.... ....

I had no idea they did this
Fucking really good version love it!!!

  86. D.... Q....

This song sounds like it could have been written by Robbie Robertson. Perhaps Springsteen was influenced by the Band when he was in high school, sounds like it to me.

  87. C.... S....

My son and his wife danced to this song at their wedding. Priceless
