Baez, Joan - What Have They Done To The Rain Lyrics

Just a little rain falling all around
The grass lifts its head to the heavenly sound
Just a little rain, just a little rain
What have they done to the rain
Just a little boy standing in the rain
The gentle rain that falls for years
And the grass is gone, the boy disappears
And rain keeps falling like helpless tears
And what have they done to the rain
Just a little breeze out of the sky
The leaves nod their head as the breeze blows by
Just a little breeze with some smoke in its eye
What have they done to the rain
Just a little boy standing in the rain
The gentle rain that falls for years
And the grass is gone, the boy disappears
And rain keeps falling like helpless tears
And what have they done to the rain
What have they done to the rain

I was a boy in the stands, watching you, learning that the voice of music is the strongest weapon of protest. Thank you and blessings.

  6. I.... H....

Weather Warfare, Weather Modification, Weather geoengineering, evilness.

  7. T.... ....

Gorgeous voice. Better to worry though, about where you will spend eternity, rather than what is happening to this physical world ... GOD is going to fix it, so don't worry yourself over it ... be concerned with who you say Jesus is, as you bring Him your repentful heart.

  8. 1.... ....

Years later the answer should be clear now....The rain has been poisoned with industrial chemicals and now it is beginning to fall in a deluge from a sky poisoned by carbon dioxide. Bob Dylan said it...It's a hard rain gonna fall.

    Wow 😍😄😍

  24. D.... M....

Chemtrails, poison food, drugs issues and vaccinations that have destroyed our children. What have they done to the rain?

  25. T.... F....

A song of such profound simplicity, but generating such emotions. I have enjoyed listening to it for years by the searchers, but never until now absorbed the lyrics. Simply wonderful.

  26. O.... K....

    I cannot forget you!

  27. M.... ....

The USA, now in the grip of monumental evil, so sad.

  28. M.... H....

How can this ever be bettered? Even God applauds! 🔯

  29. M.... n....

Certain things are almost eternal, such as this gentlest protest song. The voice is lucid. It still moves me, 45 years later.

  30. C.... M....

I was born in the early 50ties and feel so lucky to have been brought up in a time when we had all these brilliant performers. Joan was always one of my favourites.

  31. K.... T....

The voice that reaches straight into the depths of the soul. I love it as much now as I did at 16.

  32. O.... S....

My best friend is one of the lucky one that saw her perform in Sacramento. He said, the stage is plain, just a chair and standing microphone, no decorations, she just walked out to the stage. No one address her coming in to the stage..,just her and her guitar, sat down and start playing!..,oh how I wish I could of witnessed that...I learn how to play guitar because of her.

    O.... S....

When I lived in San Diego during the early 80s, Joan performed for a gathering of less than a 100 lucky souls at the Dan Diego fair grounds. I offered he a glass of wine and she graciously accepted. Her music that evening was mesmerizing ---- I learned just how beautiful and how magnificent a voice Joan Baez had that day.

  33. k.... ....

The author of this wonderful song is Malvina Reynolds. We mustn't forget it. Hats off!

    k.... ....

Little Boxes one off my Favorites too

Did not know that thought it was one of Dylans

  35. o.... s....

This is so lovely....and I love her gentle pure voice.......

  36. C.... H....

The chorus at my church (UUCDC) will be singing this next month as part of a special music service.  It is so gentle, yet so powerful when you know what it is about.  'Deportee' by Woodie Guthrie may also be part of that program.

  37. M.... A....

What a voice. every word is so clear

  38. B.... ....

written by Malvena Reynolds a lady with a foresight that we would cherish today

  46. d.... d....

As I was a child in the fifties, there wer many trying of nuclear bombs in the atmosphere. For example the french made nuclear essays in Sahara I was asking as I was 7 or 8 years old iif the rain was radioactive and didn't want anymore go out of the house when it was raining But my mother said it was nothing and said I had to go out of the home

    d.... d....

Don't be so pessimistic. There are also some hopeful sides. Many things are made to protect the environement! Be optimistic, we try to save the Earth!

    d.... d....

Ther are not so much atomic pollution like in the fifties or seventies, some lands like Germany are laying their atomic centrals still and they are going to sun and wind energy.

    d.... d....

Yeah, thanks for your response :D When I was writing my previous statement I was in very bad emotional condition, thus it is very pesimistic. But now I feel much better and think UR right, planet Earth and Mankind will live better life in future, because Mankind has began to be more aware. Have a happy day :D

I'm happy to have made you happy!

Today, April 26th, 2016 is the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster...I always think of it when I hear this song

  48. R.... F....

We have Joan Baez IN CONCERT 1962 record I got it out to play the other day.

  49. A.... P....

it took malvina reynolds to write it, but it took Joan Baez to do it justice. thanks

    A.... P....

Yes Malvina did make a recording of the classic (protest) song...she was also a much appreciated folk singer. Joan found and recorded it and it became a hit in the then folky era.
Love Joans version of this but also appreciate Malvinas writing skills

    A.... P....

One other thing that is interesting is how little most people know about Malvina. I really got into her music when my daughter was very young and I made mix tapes of many of her childrens' songs, which is a considerable number of songs. I always thought she was incredibly inventive. But very few people probably know of her work.
I could be wrong; a bunch of singers have covered many of her songs. She was definitely pivotal in the protest movement. But that is part of my point: most people do not understand the protest movement as it grew from the 'Beats' in the 50's to the 'hippies' in the 60's. Back then we had some real truth, not the 'fake truth'.

    A.... P....

Unless you knew that the song grew out of the "BAN THE BOMB" protests of the 50's, in England and America, once we learned of how the radioactivity of the nuclear bomb testing was coming down with the rain and getting into the milk we gave to our babies, you would not realize how profound the song is.

  50. G.... B....

Just recently discovered Joan Baez and am in love. This is a change compared to all the popular songs we hear today about anything and everything, and although those songs are catchy, upbeat and get stuck in your head, I prefer this over everything. <3

Check out Ruth Moody and trust me you'll be in love instantly

  51. R.... M....

How prophetic, what have they done to the rain...

  52. m.... ....

She has the most relaxing vibrato I've heard in a singer, I still have chills listening to her singing the theme to silent running...

  53. m.... ....

    to the rain?

I could not resist ending my day quietly here with a few private thoughts~~~

    T.... ....

To Therestfulwind, we seem to have a lot of those quiet thoughts as we age and the "real" music seems to have left us in place for the empty music of this age! What have they done to the rain!

    T.... ....

I come here often and my thoughts are a journey of their own. Love and Peace to all!

I'm one of the lucky ones I fell in love with this lady's charmingly clear voice in the Navy when I was 18, this year I turned 70 and still love her and her voice even though some of it's beauty has faded a bit.

    J.... B....

I also was 70 this year, at 18, 3 years after leaving school ,I was an apprentice carpenter, and like all my mates we had cars ,our generation had it all ,and I and those of my mates alive still do. we have houses, bought and paid for, money in the bank only downside is the thousands we pay in tax ,the young today have it hard, ,kept in bloody education by idiots in Westminster, have no time for
politicians, Bloody world has gone mad.

    J.... B....

We are a lucky bunch.Diamonds and Rust. If Alexandria #Ocasio-Cortez woulds just stop talking and could sing. How bitter our life has become, his lady's charmingly clear voice can still soften our sorrow

  61. v.... ....

Beautiful, but will we humans be able to stop the devastation that we and previous generations have perpetrated on the planet?

    v.... ....

I am almost certain you Mr. Veranami evoke the idea of the Apocalypse, the end, the finish of everything, from being, what it is, "no trifling matter", from the human point of view. The powers that be, save the talent for noble singers of songs, literature's artistry as while's - to- most... but only for the real world, do not seem to be any help in? Sigmund Freud shared what may well be a majority opinion come sooner or later when he penned his opinion...QUOTE, "There are... powerful deflections which cause us to make light of our misery: substitutive satisfactions which diminish it, and intoxicating substances, which make us insensitive to it. The substitive satisfactions, as offered by art are illusions. They are responsible, in certain circumstances, for the useless waste of a large quota of energy which might have been employed for the improvement of the human lot." ref: SING OUT ! The Folk Song Magazine, Vol 35 #4, Winter 1991, Appleseeds column, Pete Seeger, pg.41: STANDARD EDITION OF THE COMPLETE PSYCHOLOGICAL WORKS OF SIGMUND FREUD, VII (1942, but written in 1905 /`ibid near late 19th - early 20th century. What is most important is that all of us, each in our own way keep working to bring the understanding for a future world. Don't give up, this question you ask demands it need (-) reply.

    very true. done beautifully

So long ago...and so long before people realized what pollution would do to us. So sad that it seems that no one listened.

  73. F.... L....

Joan impresses me every time I listen to her. I have been since the early 60s. Was she born with that voice ? She has mixed ethnic background. Mexican, South American, Scottish. Whatever you call it, it worked for her. And she looks very Latino.

    F.... L....

To clarify, she has no Mexican ancestors, but her father is Puerto Rican.

    F.... L....

Her father was born in Mexico and her mother came from Scotland.

    F.... L....

father was mexican native people .

  74. F.... L....

Yes. Hard to ignore her. She is an Angel. What a gifted Lady.

  75. s.... ....

First nation themes affect us all if it affects Brazil affects Malaysia too

  76. P.... C....

    ok, cheers for that,

  77. f.... ....

You are right, these voices are "uniquely classic and hard to find these days." Current female folk singers do not have this type of voice or sing these kind of songs anymore. I wish they did!

    f.... ....

  78. f.... ....

There is an Irish folk singer by the name of Anne Byrne. Not well known outside of Ireland during the 1960's but she did have somewhat of a similiar Joan Baez type voice. There are videos of Anne Byrne on Youtube where she is singing alone and other videos where she is singing with an Irish guy. She was never well known or famous but had a really nice voice. Look her up on Youtube sometime. She had several LPs out in the mid to late 60's. I think she sang mostly in & around Dublin, Ireland.

  79. m.... ....

Do you want me to transcribe it?

  80. H.... ....

I agree. They actually say many similar qualities. Upon close listening I think Judith's voice is "bigger", but still has great control, and Joan has a mastery of a wider range of easily hit notes low to high than you usually hear in Judith's voice. They both have a similarity in tone quality and vibrato.

  81. H.... L....

    この演奏を初めて聴いたのはもう半世紀近く前の高校生のとき。当時はギターを弾きながらジョーン・バエズの曲を盛んに歌っていたが、今、福島原発事故の後この曲を聴くと感慨深いものがある。

  83. P.... C....

will do, thanks for that, this is what's missing today, real music and incredible singers.

  84. r.... ....

yup,it was. But she is not either Dylan or Paul Simon. the three are radically different from each other

  85. P.... C....

i love joans voice, there's only judith durham who comes close

  86. E.... d....

    such a lyrical voice!
How can something be so sublime?

  87. V.... C....

    Dogfight

  88. 1.... ....

I didn't see anyone answering the question of what the song was originally about. It was written by Malvina Reynolds in the early 60's to protest the radioactive fallout from testing atomic weapons in the atmosphere. I think the fallout was Strontium 90 and it had a half-life of 29 years and was being poured into the atmosphere almost thoughtlessly. It is such a powerful personal plea to think about what we were doing. Devastatingly simple and beautiful. Her version is available on YouTube.

  89. D.... C....

    Lindo ! a imagem e a voz do BELO ! Brasil ! Deborah

  90. K.... W....

She has a fingerstyle gently similar to Davey Graham.

  91. I.... G....

I like The Searcher's version better

  92. J.... ....

I'd put Joan Baez up against anyone today and she'd win hands down!! She's the female version of Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel combined!!!

  93. 4.... ....

I agree very much with your assessment! I've liked a lot of her songs, but am especially fond of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"! I am even more taken with the voice of Marianne Faithfull, and actually prefer (a little bit) her version of THIS song. I'm thinking it was written by Malvina Reynolds.

  94. C.... S....

she has a divine voice...it is like...listening to beautiful pure agels from the heavens

  95. M.... ....

Her great voice, combined with the power of this great song of social consciousness, gives me the willies..
