Baez, Joan - The Last Thing On My Mind Lyrics
It's a lesson too late for the learnin'
Made of sand, made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turnin'
In your hand, in your hand
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could have loved you better
Didn't mean to be unkind
That was the last thing on my mind
You've got reasons a-plenty for goin'
This I know, this I know
For the weeds have been steadily growin'
Please don't go, please don't go
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could have loved you better
Didn't mean to be unkind
That was the last thing on my mind
As I lie in my bed in the mornin'
Without you, without you
Each song in my breast dies a-bornin'
Without you, without you
Are you goin' away with no word of farewell?
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I should have loved you better
Didn't mean to be unkind
That was the last thing on my mind

Baez, Joan The Last Thing On My Mind Comments
Paxton was a true poet. Baez a true troubador.
Good song!
my favorite american folk singer
Judith Durham did a nice
cover of this.
Joan is an American treasure!
Wow, in light of climate emergency, this song takes on a whole new meaning: eco-grief, exactly: You know I could have loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind, you know that was the last thing on my mind." Exactly - now we realize how badly we've treated the earth - just wasn't on our mind - until now, that we - no our children and grandchild - will pay the most bitter price for our neglect. There's no voice in the world that conveys this grief like Joan Baez'
Yes Susan, we took Mother Earth for granted. I love the way you put it.
the best ever version is that by neil diamond
So, so beautifull! She is a genius with folk,
with traditional, protest, ballads, gospell, jazz, love songs , or whatever she
chooses to sing, to play or to compose. She is simply an uttermost talented
soul and a great and good heart and intelligence at the service of mankind.
She´s a precious gift that was given to us. Today, more than ever, we need Love
On Action which is who Joan is. Gratitude and deep respect forever, Joan Baez.
she promoted communism all her life, with no insight into why it doesn't work - anyone think she didn't get paid for her performances, or distributed the pay to the "people"?
And looks like you're promoting bullshit all your life.
Always loved Joan, ever since college in the 60s,voice of an angel.I just don't like her liberal politics.
And we don't give a damn about your stinking 'politics' either.
great song - sketchy idiom.
"the last thing on my mind" is a clunky amalgam of
"the last thing i wanted to do" and
"the furthest thing from my mind".
for what it's worth -
which is another song entirely.
the seeker is more beautiful
Joan Baez is the most amazing singer ever.
I completely agree with Beth Scheider. Morningtown Ride is one of the best songs of The Seekers. Their cover of this song is superb, though I am avid fan of Joan Baez.
ppandmary have a great version
so does Eric Anderson.
judy version blue grass style far better than the seekers
my version is way better than white joan does a slow version of this great song i think judy collins does a better version a lot faster
Clarence White's version is the absolute best.
Joking about the authoritative declaration, lol. There are many wonderful versions of this Tom Paxton song. Many folks confuse their personal favorites with some objective standard of truth. Clarence's is great though.
Eric Anderson does a very good cover.
Brown Paw Isi
Joan is one of my all time favorite singers. I love her vocals on this song but there is something about the arrangement that I feel could have been done differently.Just not crazy about the arrangement on this song but vocals are great as always!
I agree with Buckarooski99. TheSeekers did this best! But this is good too!
JOAN BAEZ...SIMPLESMENTE A AMO.
Singin it thru. No feeling.
@Clancy Coburn Totally Disagree. Oh well. I believe Joan is incapable of singing with "No feeling". I love her rendering here. Ce la vie. Different strokes, etc, etc.
yeah it is pretty darn good. i was probably drunk at the time.
just visited the folk city exhibit---- beautifiul era---- paxton/baez/seeger/ guthrie/ dylan/weavers/peter paul mary/lee hayes-----promoter leventhal ----
+Dan L you forgot the Seekers! They did a REALLY beautiful version of this Song plus a lot more such as Morningtown Ride and I'll never find another you!
lovely lady, i have loved you over the decades, your music is a treasure and a voice like an angel, in fact an angel could not have done better with the AVE MARIA you sung Bless you. I love you singing this song, as I do my other dear singer, John Denver
My all time favourite female soloist. If you're reading this Joan, you might remember me as the leaping loony in the second row when you were at Cambridge in 2000, and I had the honour to be the person you chose to look at when thanking the audience.
Any one Know Jan Baez, and doesn't like Joan Baez! doesn't count on my humans list...
listen to John Hutchinson one last kiss and his other sngs
Poetry of life even in a short blurb on a blog.
Can't get into this version, though I love her Diamonds and Rust. I first heard my DAD play this, and that my definitive version. He played Hank Williams, Haggard, and Gordon Lightfoot. He passed away Oct 13 at 80 years old.Now my sister is taking up guitar. One dies ....one is born sort of.
Good tune though.
Joan's studio version (from the vaults) kicks the Seeker's version all to hell (from the reissued DAVID'S ALBUM)
JD was always chasing after Joan and Judy but she never coud catch 'em. Pretty voice
but nowhere near the American Women's vision or soul and way more pop corn.
to hate her politics you must a RIIIIIIhgt wing nutbar. All she has ever done is try for peace, sharing, caring ,human rights, the dignity of human beings and causes for the betterment of society. What is not to like, love and admire?
You nailed the best version as being by the Seekers, JudithDurham had a beautifull voice and I was in love with her. The girl could sing anything and I remember watching her do a special for the BBC, taking her great voice everywhere from jazz, blues, folk to standards. She had it All in spades!
Tom Paxton ....has a better version. Sorry.
Joan is so beautiful :)
yah joan
muito muito gusto
I hate her for her politics. But she does have a great voice.
One of the best folk songs ever, written by Tom Paxton in mid to late 60s, and many, many versions have been done. The best rendition, in my opinion, is by the Australian folk group The Seekers. Their harmonies and overall production of this great song is the best ever done. But you cannot go wrong with any version of this amazing and enduring song.
@msattler111 well said
Hi Joan I don't expect you to ever remember me but we crossed paths at the Philadelphia Folk Festival more years ago than I want to remember, although they were the sweetest years of my life and I woldn't trade them for anything.
The only other version better is that by the late Mary Travers.
thanks, Scout4Me1,
Would you post the studio version with the late Jerry Reed's killer guitar work?
Thank you for posting this song.
