Baez, Joan - One Too Many Mornings Lyrics

Down the street the dogs are barkin'
And the day is a-gettin' dark.
As the night comes in a-fallin',
The dogs 'll lose their bark.
An' the silent night will shatter
From the sounds inside my mind,
For I'm one too many mornings
And a thousand miles behind.

From the crossroads of my doorstep,
My eyes they start to fade,
As I turn my head back to the room
Where my love and I have laid.
An' I gaze back to the street,
The sidewalk and the sign,
And I'm one too many mornings
An' a thousand miles behind.

It's a restless hungry feeling
That don't mean no one no good,
When ev'rything I'm a-sayin'
You can say it just as good.
You're right from your side,
I'm right from mine.
We're both just too many mornings
An' a thousand miles behind.

  1. P.... D....

purity and beauty and a thousand other words i cant dream up describe the voice of joan baez.

  2. C.... R....

A great singer, a voice I really love, and an individual committment in human causes I greatly admire.
    So long Joannie...

  3. P.... L....

So damn good and you can feel the maestro and composer too. . .

  4. K.... J....

Une legende absolue de la musique et des arts !

  5. D.... H....

I have not heard a singer with the ability of Joan Baez.  Her voice is so beautiful and so great duplicating her is not going to be easy anytime soon.   Love this song.  I am also a folk music lover.  Joan does so many different styles and does them all so well that she is just not one that can be over looked to better an original song.  She is my favorite female singer.

  6. A.... B....

    ❤️🌹👏🏻😘

  7. k.... c....

That she possesses a talent for songwriting; I don't know. But Madame Dylan excels on that song. A+.

    k.... c....

madame Dylan??? Mister Baez of course!

  8. c.... h....

j'adore !!! qu'elle belle chanson et qu'elle belle voix !! merveilleuse Joan merci Bob Dylan

  9. W.... Q....

Joanie really did this justice.n Dylan wrote it ....but it needed this wistful melancholic sweet sadness. Bob was better writer tho..than singer for most part but he changes his tone so frequently..that's Dylan... what a jewel. I " kinda talk this" when I play .. works fo me

  10. d.... g....

Voice of a generation , I love Joan Baez 💖

  11. M.... M....

She has a great voice, no questions about that. The music is good too, but what is missing is the feeling. Dylan was a master of capturing the essence of emotions. It didn't need to be hi fi it just needed to be real. In my opinion Joan Baez misses that with Dylan.

    M.... M....

almost anyone sang dylons songs better than he did

    M.... M....

I don't think so. You can read the words on the page and there's feeling. Understated is better, but to each his own. Hey, you're right from your side, and I'm right from mine. Where did I hear that?

  12. A.... M....

    Forminable

  13. f.... ....

If you don't love this, you have no soul.

😯I love to hear Joan sing Dylan's songs, she makes beautiful music, no weird vocals just as a great vocalist that she is!!😯

  17. f.... d....

this will always be my "go to " song when nights get too long ----

    f.... d....

There are times when this song, either her version or Dylan's, are what I listen to over and over and over. It opens doors inside me.

  18. S.... M....

    GREAT SOUND .

  19. V.... T....

My lifetime idol since I began to sing at the early age of 14.

  28. A.... E....

what a golden voice and a wonderful-excellent singer!

  29. t.... ....

Every generation should listen to these songs to realize the genius of Dylan. Sad-Eyed Lady, being my favorite of all.

    t.... ....

+thetruthwillsetufree "Love is just a four Letter Word" is also one of his best songs. Unfortunately Dylan never recorded this one...

    t.... ....

    true genius

    t.... ....

Every generation will - He is immortal.

  30. 1.... ....

someone else wrote some years ago "when Joan sings outdoors the birds stop singing to listen"   Yup, that sums it up!

    1.... ....

1Winoh little kids and infants too. They start imitating the singing. She is divine isn’t she?

    1.... ....

The tiny hairs on my ears bow down in reverence....lads & lassies, to the Goddess of Song

  31. y.... ....

My favourite Dylan cover of all. So simple yet so powerful.

    y.... ....

    You got it!!

  32. t.... ....

Also recorded by the Association in '66 for their 2nd single, by the Beau Brummels the same year, and live on tour that year by Dylan himself in Dublin. All 3 and this one are in my Association playlist. Thanks for the upload!

  33. A.... W....

a thousand miles behind is a big mf ass, hmmmm

    A.... W....

Man go the fuck away you scum bag loser douche worthless piece of dog shit!

    A.... W....

@Steven Besst I am going to legally put you out of the electrical contracting business Steve. Watch.

  34. f.... ....

I think the best version was recorded by Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash  (LP Heroes), a sad song written for Suze Rotolo

  35. j.... o....

There is a different version on this song by her that is 1000 x's better than this. It was an outtake from the Farewell Angelina album (I think). It is so much better, her voice has more passion, strength, and conviction in it. This version sounds so middle-of-the-road and sterile compared. But I can't find that version anywhere. It is worth looking for.

    j.... o....

@C. K. That's so awesome! Thank you for letting me know!

    j.... o....

+C. K. And I noticed the other outtake The Water Is Wide put up too! One of the most beautiful/sad songs my ears have ever heard. Why those two songs didn't make it onto Farewell, Angelina I have no idea. Thanks again.

    j.... o....

Did anyone find the version of One Too Many Mornings with Joan Baez on acoustic guitar?

    j.... o....

you have the link of this other version of the music? i can´t find and want so much to listen

    j.... o....

She sang it once in concert in 1979 and I've been looking for it ever since.

  36. W.... H....

Still the best. I've often wondered why this widely covered song is so hard to get right. It's lovely in a reflective, somewhat mournful way. Baez gets that perfectly, letting the melody carry the mood but shaping it with her respect for the lyrical content. The song moves like a dance, but that can be a problem for the mood. I love other versions (the Johnny Cash/Waylon Jennings duet is gorgeous), but this one finds the perfect balance.

    W.... H....

I am so impressed by you and her , because it let me know Joan Baez still can touch people's heart even in 2014 .
    That's so amazing, isn't that?

    W.... H....

@Walter Hall She got an even better groove on this song when she regularly performed it with a full band on her "Blowin Away" tour in the late 70s. Used to have a bootleg of the Chicago show and all those songs where way better live than on the lp.

    W.... H....

+Walter Hall Should check out Draco Rosa cover of the song, its completely different but its the best version imo

  37. j.... ....

Joan  Baez or Johnny Cash ,fortunately  you I can listen to both and don't need to decide

    j.... ....

    I prefer Chemical Brothers :P

    j.... ....

@Adrian Moment Sirloin or filet minon, I can eat either and don't need to decide.  I prefer "spam" :P

  38. B.... S....

    buena musica

  39. D.... A....

I heard Peter Paul and Mary sing it years ago but not record it ---------

  40. s.... k....

Her voice is so romantic like a morning chirping bird. It proves once again that music knows no bar music has universal appeal . Thank you so much for uploading. Keep uploading her songs.

  41. P.... M....

I am in love with this lady.....
    lovely,,,...nightingale voice
    thanks for uploading this song

  42. P.... P....

    quelle jolie voix

  43. J.... S....

Never heard this before, really like it.

  44. y.... ....

My favourite Dylan cover, even better than Bob's version I think. I've seen Joan twice in concert in Cardiff in recent years, a church was just outside one of the venues, its bells rang between songs,Joan heard them then talked about the song 'The Bells of Rhymney' by Pete Seeger, then she sang it with no preparation at all. Just a wonderful moment.

  45. f.... ....

Maybe for me the best is by The Band

  46. j.... ....

this version or johnny cash I can't decide which I s the best

  47. f.... ....

A song for Suze Rotolo no for Joan.

    f.... ....

But Suze Rotolo   -RIP-  was not a singer woman.. I love so much Joan's voice a personality.

  48. 1.... ....

one of the best recordings she ever made and one of the few better than the master!

    1.... ....

I give you 10 thumbs up!

  49. K.... N....

listen to John Hutchinson one last kiss and his other sngs

  50. j.... ....

surprisingly bland, not one of her best moments.

  51. B.... C....

My thoughts're with the wind and the sound waves, traverse paths uncertain.

  52. g.... ....

Struggling through college met my lady fair. We were already committed to others, and this song just hit home as we remained faithful to our partners and our ideals.

  53. L.... G....

this is not as close as anything to dylan's. a nice distraction and a beautifully interpreted but dylan means business. bottomline

  54. 5.... ....

I happened to accidentally stumble upon Joan Baez I must say its been so long since an artist has stirred my soul

  55. R.... F....

by the tens of thousands of views to each and every one of her videos here, you can rest assured, you are not alone. :-)

  56. D.... U....

Skyghost: I don't think Baez and Dylan ever married. She married a friend of mine, David Harris, in 1968. They divorced in 1973, I think, and she and Dylan had an affair for a couple of years while her fame helped get him recognized. They just always did the best they could.

  57. 1.... ....

Better than dylan and that's impossible!

  58. J.... ....

thank god for youtube sometimes i think im the only joan baez fan out here

    J.... ....

Johnny Joan Baez voice is incredible, God bless her voice

    J.... ....

I have been a Joan Baez fan since 1963. I have just about everything she did in my itunes library.

  59. P.... C....

The emotions - "a restless, hungry feeling" - are Dylan's, the song is Dylan's, other versions can only be a tribute. No one does Dylan like Dylan. Nobody.

    P.... C....

And thank goodness. He would never have made any impression as a singer if he weren't a great songwriter.

  60. p.... ....

    @TheBlindPig1 gotcha!

  61. r.... ....

    Better than Dylan.

    r.... ....

    four strong winds be Dylan

  62. J.... ....

She's great. But I don't like the way she sings Dylan songs.

  63. D.... Z....

i just love her voice. Just beautiful.

  64. S.... C....

    Beautiful as always.

    Saskia

  65. c.... ....

@Scout4Me1 Joan covers Dylan better than anyone ever did or does...

  66. J.... g....

No one does Dylan like Baez....
    Here is a perfect example...

  67. n.... ....

This my favorite Dylan song, favorite cover of this song, and favorite Joan Baez song. Excellent lyrical imagery, and Joan captured the mood. .

  68. 8.... ....

@lenahjonsson ....everything I´m saying you can say it just as good....

  69. L.... J....

Always "one too many.... mornings, days, kisses, tears .... behind"
Guess I wasn't born in time...

  70. M.... ....

    So nice!

  71. M.... ....

This is my favorite cut from a brilliant cd.

  72. M.... P....

    Thank you very much!
It is a real gift! I just love this song which accompanied me when my lover died some years ago!

  73. S.... ....

one of my favorites - i am sweetly and forever haunted by the fleeting and butterfly-like mandolin interludes

    thanks for posting
