Baez, Joan - Let Us Break Bread Together Lyrics

Let us break bread together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us break bread together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me. (on me)

Let us drink wine together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us drink wine together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me. (on me)

Let us praise God together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us praise God together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me. (on me)

Let us praise God together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us praise God together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy if you please. (if you please)

As a Christian, I have discrepancies about the lyrics of the 'Lets us break bread together' song. Why is there a need to put our face to the rising sun. Pagan religious folks used to worship the sun.

I have the same issue. Ezekiel 8:16 speaks of the 25 men who turned their backs to the temple of the Lord and instead of worshipping God worshipped the sun. Definitely idol worship. This is how Satan subtly deceives the believers into giving him worship. As believers we need to understand the times like the sons of Issachar 1 Chronicles 12:32.

When Christians stop complaining about everything and everyone under the sun maybe people will turn to Christ. There's no allusion to pagan worship in this song. Get a grip dude!

I bet you're either a Calvinist or Funda-mental-ist. You disgust me.

While I agree with and understand your sentiment, the fact is that the early Christians do seem to have prayed towards Jerusalem in the East, and older churches were traditionally constructed to be East-facing. I think the lyrics do not say we are worshipping the sun, but are poetically indicating that we are breaking bread 'in church', so we might happen to be facing East, whether we realise it or not. (It's actually an interesting subject to read about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orientation_of_churches)

What a wonderful reminder for us to return to our roots in order to redirect the trajectory of today's events. Sankofa, an Adinkra symbol of a large bird standing with his head turned backwards can be interpreted in these few words: " It is ok to return to the past, if it is yours and reclaim it." In some interpretations it is considered "it is ok to go back if you've lost your way in order to move forward again." Our children have lost their way. You cannot know where your going if you have no knowledge of where you've been. Marcus Garvey said "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots."

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (August 9, Pentecost 11), we sang "Let Us Break Bread Together" during the distribution of Holy Communion. It is #471 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

mikek17 born and raised Catholic I take umbrage with many bible passages and question the "Baltimore catechisms" antiquated notions. I try to remember Jesus didn't write the bible.
One thing I KNOW for sure. If indeed we were all of us created in Gods image, and that we are all loved by God as his/her creation, we are ALL loved regardless of any personal preference. It's about who you are in your heart of hearts. The good you do. Jesus didn't come here to reject anyone. I know very little but this is what I believe.
God is a loving God. I just thank ms. Baez for always using her position for good and always giving back.
If she's any example of what belief in God is about, do you think she wouldn't break bread with anyone who was lgbt?
