Baez, Joan - If I Knew Lyrics

If I knew where the wild dove flew
I would not tell the hunter, but I would tell you
Though they say you're not a brave man, hardly a man at all
You would not shoot the wild things, like brave men in the fall
Mmmm mm

If I knew where calypso bloomed,
I would not tell the ladies, but I would tell you
For you would not take the flower, for money or for love
Or harm a single petal, 'cause you would not shoot the dove
Mmmm mm

If I knew where our green love grew
I would not tell the others, but I would tell you
For 'though the world may call you craven, I know it is not true
And 'though a sword may hang between us, my songs THROUGH all for you
Mmmm mm

Baez, Joan If I Knew Comments

Hi Greg, I appreciate your attention to this small detail. Nina Dusheck was my mother. She died in 1969, in a car accident. I was 14. Anyway, I have the same name, so I feel confident in the spelling. The name was spelled incorrectly in a lot of places. It's almost Mother's Day, so I have been thinking of her.

Hi jdusheck. Thanks for the information. I think I have all my listings corrected now and will make sure to spell the name right for a "Saigon Bride" video (maybe add a remark saying the record label has it wrong). You're right about incorrect spellings - I've found "Duschek" and "Dushek" also. My mother died when I was 11 so I can understand how you feel. I hope everyone enjoys listening to these songs she wrote. I do the videos only because I love the songs - I'm not monetizing anything I do, though YouTube does put ads on songs with copyright claimants. "If I Knew" and "North" don't yet have that. This is something you certainly don't have to do - but since Wikipedia does not have an entry for your mother and information could be hard to find in other places, people might be interested in hearing something about her background and how she came to write these songs for Joan Baez. Again, thank you.

Lyrics by Nina Dusheck, correcting the spelling.

    j.... ....

Hi jdusheck. I'm guessing you are related to Nina Dusheck. Please let us know more. I believe I had earlier the name spelled as you say it should be in all my video descriptions. I then found on joanbaez.com the following under song listings "Gossamer (music by Joan Baez, lyrics by Nina Duscheck)" and assumed they knew the correct spelling. So, I went to all my descriptions and changed them to agree with joanbaez.com. I've just checked both album labels and info in Wikipedia and both agree with you - so I've corrected my descriptions for "If I Knew" and "North" - though I note that I had a further error for "If I Knew" and hope all is correct now. I've yet to do a video for "Saigon Bride" so I was spared having the same error there. Thank you.

I've just looked at "Saigon Bride" and that has "Duscheck" for the song's information on the Vanguard record label - I don't know if that's simply an error or if that was the correct (perhaps alternate) spelling at that time. No wonder I got confused as to what I should be putting in my descriptions.
