Baez, Joan - A Song For David (David's Song) Lyrics

In my heart I will wait
By the stony gate
And the little one
In my arms will sleep.
Every rising of the moon
Makes the years grow late
And the love in our hearts will keep.
There are friends I will make
And bonds I will break
As the seasons roll by
And we build our own sky.
In my heart I will wait
By the stony gate
And the little one
In my arms will sleep.

And the stars in your sky
Are the stars in mine
And both prisoners
Of this life are we.
Through the same troubled waters
We carry our time,
You and the convicts and me.
There's a good thing to know
On the outside or in,
To answer not where
But just who I am.
Because the stars in your sky
Are the stars in mine
And both prisoners
Of this life are we.

And the hills that you know
Will remain for you
And the little willow green
Will stand firm.
The flowers that we planted
Through the seasons past
Will all bloom
On the day you return.
To a baby at play
All a mother can say,
He'll return on the wind
To our hearts, and till then
I will sit and I'll wait
By the stony gate
And the little one
'neath the trees will dance.

This is such wonderfully beautiful song , but I believe the best version I have heard, is the day after she wrote it (September 13, 1969) at the Celebration of Big Sur. That version is a solo performance and much more emotional and raw. Both are great!

  5. R.... B....

"The stars in your sky are the stars in mine." One of the most cosmically beautiful lines of all time.

    R.... B....

    That cartoon mouse copied it.

  6. J.... P....

  7. A.... G....

After all these years she is still THE voice. Total clarity, simple but beautiful beyond words.

  8. M.... G....

    Joan is always wonderful. MORE!

  9. J.... T....

    Great pickin', neat cord progressions.

  10. S.... S....

I so remember this song & it's message ... David in prison... Joan carrying on.. with "the little one". waiting for David to return... David & Joan committed to the cause...I can see the record spinning on the turntable & hear the sound from the speakers....... .. me constantly on the move

  11. R.... L....

Heard this song in the 70s. Lovely to listen to it again after so many years. Sweet n sublime. Thanks for posting.

  12. I.... ....

Joanie has been a constant in my life since my teens. (60 years) She influenced my life coming from upper middle class Orange County republicans....I saw what she was doing Marching with Martin Luther King et al....I totally dropped out from my conservative brainwashing of my own politically active parents. They were actually supportive for me going my own way, and NEVER forbid my listening to a liberal activist, in fact, my own dad loved many of her songs. And started supporting many of her causes. This woman not only made incredible music, she was a very positive, profound influence to many generations young and old. Thank you for everything you have done to help enhance my life, both my own political views, and my personal life and values. You are such a National Treasure beautiful "Joanie" I will love and admire you always. ~David~

    I.... ....

Yes, your story is mine as well......East Coast, Connecticut.....conservative family, etc. These songs and her actions for social justice led me away and onto a path of helping where I could in life. So powerful.....

    I.... ....

and how is your view on libtards vs conservicunts now?

    I.... ....

@thisoneisforcommenting ok Grow up and try to write a complete English sentence without profanity.

  13. d.... S....

Compared to Dylan's poetry in his songs, Joan's early efforts to write songs paled in comparison

Even if one might not like Dylan's voice, his lyrics were the most profound of any pop music writer in the 20th century (even compared to Lennon McCartney)

    d.... S....

+dhscpa1956 Smith Comparison is not worthy of the artistic temperament, however identification is. Bolivia and Canasta do not go together!

    d.... S....

It's a matter of opinion. Love Song to a Stranger is a fine example of Joan's writing and this along with a wonderful voice sets a standard that Dylan said " Hmmm she can do it"

  14. J.... ....

... and your poetry was lousy he said? I don't think so. Beautiful, Joan.

    J.... ....

+JivinJane not all of Dylan's poetry was his own.

    J.... ....

Poetry like art is in the ear, eye, of the beholder. Just one line can make the poem earthmoving and Joan can do that.

From the Bee Gees song A Million Years there is a line "And in the winter we will stand in seas of snow...alone" Very moving.

Still have all Joans LP's from Uni days...Thanks for the posting

    J.... ....
