Badfinger - Dennis Lyrics

Deeper waters flowed
Recently it showed
Tryin' to cover your head
Tryin' to frighten you
Tryin' to fight with you
Really gettin' you scared
But don't you worry, you love of mine
Pretty soon it will all be fine
And we'll just go on

Higher hills to climb
Climbin' all the time
Tryin' to find a way through
Fallin' down again, on the ground again
Wonderin' what you can do
But don't you worry, you love of ours
They look like weeds, but they're really flowers
And they'll soon be gone

You won't stand up, you won't sit down
Your head's a mile above the ground
And though we tend to scold you now
I couldn't start to tell you how
We couldn't start to tell you how
There's just no way to say how much we love you

You, little Dennis, you
You're full of new surprise
Love you
You, little Dennis with the rascal in your eyes
You're a prize

It could be bad, it could be worse
You're taking out your mother's purse
And though you cried when you got told
The money there was for the old
To keep their dogs from getting cold
The only thing that can't be sold is love

You, little Dennis, you
You're full of new surprise
Love you
You, little Dennis with the rascal in your eyes

Will you pick up your toys?
Will you be a good boy?
Will you please, please?

There's a way
There's a way
If you'll play
If you'll stay
There's a way through
There's a way to take away blue
Take away blue

There's a way
There's a way
If you'll play
If you'll stay
There's a way through
There's a way to take away blue
Take away blue

There's a way
There's a way
If you'll play
If you'll stay
There's a way through
There's a way to...

Badfinger Dennis Comments
  1. Grace Lennowell

Simply and easy: the best badfinger song

  2. Luis Corro

When the "Wish you were here" album was released, their record label, did not push it enough, so little number of copies were done and it was really hard to get. I was lucky enough to own one copy that i always played at home or during my radio show.

  3. Alec Ball

Your group is still so so alive

  4. AlwaysaMystery Yes

If classic rock stations knew what they were doing, they'd play this and not fucking Bon Jovi and U2.

  5. David Birks

I always come back to this band. This song is genius.

  6. Rob Harding

For a man who only lived until he was 27, his songwriting was quite prolific.and some of those songs are real classics,

  7. Peter May

Another classic song from Badfinger's best and most constant album song wise & Chris Thomas superb production... 'Wish You Were Here'!

  9. Bass Keeper

3:08 Will you pick up your toys? Will you be a good boy? Then music perfection 😊✌️

  10. Rick Rozoff

    A highly - tragically - neglected song.

  11. Kenn Conn

A heartbreaking and tragic story, with beautiful and heartfelt music...their story should be a must-learn for ALL new artists...

  12. Gara Pata

Name of The Game and Apple of My Eye are two of my most favorite underrated songs of Badfinger. Pete Ham is genius but he was so depressed about tomorrow so he took his life today. Sad ending for geniuses Pete and Tom

  13. el alan

Saw them in 1973, Thiel College, Greenville PA. Joey sprayed us with a beer. 10cc opened. No one wanted to leave. Induct them into the Hall of Fame! Better live than any album. It was life changing experience. Pete, for you now my heart cries out. RIP

    fawltyborstals

amazing!!! thanks for posting.. got any more anecdotes from the gig?

  14. Michele Roth

Always loved Baby Blue, found this thru a tweet by a fellow Posies fan, and HOLY SHIT. not only is this amazing, but it crystallizes the Posies lineage.

    Joy Stinson

Michele Roth , babu blue was a classic...had the single

  15. Heath Harrison

Pete's lyrics in the fadeout are almost foreshadowing what would happen later on.

"There's a way to, takeaway blue..."
    Very sad.

  16. Aretha Gama

the guitars in 00:31 look very similiar to the beginning of This river is wild by The Killers

  17. randall scott burress

some-one to watch over me from above?

  18. Victor Pereyra

The best song in the best Badfinger album

  19. Radamanthys32

O que falar dessa branda ? Simplismente fantastica.

  20. Gary Twitchett

In 1976 I played and played "DENNIS", "JUST A CHANCE" & "KNOW ONE KNOWS" with Total 'Shivers down the Spine' I still LOVE Badfinger to this day, and always will.

  21. colin davies

one of the great welsh bands,,with a tragic history,,

    Frank Mccormick

2 welsh members 2 members from Liverpool 👍👍

  22. Joseph Caravella Jr.

Theres a way ,Theres a way, if You'll pay, if You'll stay...........

  23. posstockhoarder

Could be me favorite song by them.

  24. Daniel Hudelson

through the years, this just keeps sounding better

  25. Ricado Rodriguez

The only thing that cant be sold is love bastards

    Louis Ippolito

You mean, The Only Thing That Can't Be Sold Is Looooooove!

  26. mixxmastr

I'm 61 now. I was in my mid 20's when I found this album in bargain bin. At the time all I knew about Badfinger was Come and Get It, No Matter What and Day After Day. Those singles had NOT prepared me for Wish You Were Here. I immediately played it for my rock-friends. We ALL went nuts. Within a year we all owned EVERY SINGLE album they had out. since then every album that followed Wish You Were Here, solo Pete Ham and Solo Joey. For those of you who consider yourselves Badfinger "complete-ist's", who DON'T have Joey's "This Way Up", it's a VERY worthy member.

  27. theprogwalrus

such a masterpiece, and a beautiful outro.

  28. Sean Allen-Doyle

This is easily my favorite song of all time.. My dad showed this band to me when I was 13, and it just clicked and motivated me. I played this song for his funeral as well.. This song deserves so much praise and love, and so does this band :) Thank you Pete and Tom

    Sandy Sandy

Nice to read that . :)

    J. B

Sean Allen. it's still so hard to believe they are gone. A part of me willl never accept it.

  29. Andy Hutchcraft

Amazing song. In a different life, I'd be Pete Ham's best mate. Hope he's found peace, wherever he is; Tom too. x

  30. John Ferguson

So glad I got to see all the original members ,open for Alice Cooper in the early 70's.

    Frank Mccormick

They both shared the same record label and the cover of wish you here was similar to the inner pics from alice coopers muscle of love album, the groups being dressed up as sailors

    J. B

    John Ferguson. Envy you terribly.

    Luis Corro

    Lucky you...

  31. classiclistener01

The "Wish You Were Here" album. What a privilege to own something so forgotten, so rare, and, so GREAT!

Peter Ham, and, later, Tom Evans, killed themselves due to Stan Polley robbing the band. Joey Molland wasn't such a friend in the end, either.

I love this band to the end! Peter Ham was "TOO" trusting of parasites promising to help the band, but, instead, looking to rob it, as was Tom Evans. I hate their fate due to fraud, greed, and, thievery by scumbags.

  32. dusty48

    Best Bandfinger song.

    John Ferguson

    BLODWYN

  33. Rick Dagger

I love this song. I always did. I miss this band like an old friend

    Christopher B

Lovely way to remember this band. #BadfingerLivesOn

  34. Bob Chomos

This is a musical masterpiece! Badfinger lives forever in our hearts. I guess they were familiar with Dennis the Menace!

  35. Jose Torres

Highly underrated song. This is like their bohemian rhapsody.

    cristylo80

My thoughts when I first heard it! One of my top favorites for sure.

    Garrett Sorensen

Funny that the 2 longer songs on the same album can vie for that title too.

    B Weeks

    reminds me of 10cc

  36. Blair jpf

Great song by a great musician, song writer, and person but then again I am slightly biased

    6000cs

    @Blair jpf
Hi Blair! I love this song. I can only imagine how you feel about it. Just let me tell you that I first was able to hear this song in the US around 2 years ago. Right about that time, my wife had a freak heart attack, and was in ICU for 8 days, in a coma. I don't know why, but the beautiful last few minutes of this song played in my head the whole time. It comforted me. Things turned out well. Pete's story means alot to me.
Best regards. Hope you and the family are very well.

  37. Truth Monger.

    @*****  +Detect Oil @*****  I'm Waiting for you.

    SR 0

Truth Monger. That's a load of crap and you know it! You don't know what your talking about! Because your talking like a moron like a jerk! Making up things as you go along with nothing you said! That don't make any sense!

  38. Eduardo Pineda

También No Matter What

  39. Steve915

One of all time favorite Badfinger songs!

Pete Ham was a great songwriter and singer and is still badly missed even after 40 years.

  40. Ian Davis

I'm in my fifties and thought I heard it all. I only discovered this track in May 2014. Where do I find the adjectives ??? The finest pop tune ever to ever pass my ear lobes. Brilliant melody, harmonies, production. The changing melody passages has kept me glued to it like a teenager finding love for the first time. Superb. This masterpiece was stolen from my generation, thanks to Pollytics. I could go on, but I want to listen to it again.

    Robert Fegley

+Ian Davis Ha, I just turned fifty and also heard this for the first time just a couple of years ago. It's simply a stunning piece of music.

    Roger Gros

Can't believe you're just hearing this for the first time! I've been a fan since the beginning. It was so frustrating that they were so talented but got screwed so many different ways. Read Dan Matovina's book on Badfinger. You'll cry all night.

    Joy Stinson

Roger Gros , truly The did ...the apple dissolution beatles breakup wars ....then worst of all the later sheister manager.

  41. Dennis Morrison

Thanks!  Been looking for this song forever!

  42. Rick Boone

    Brilliant.

  43. dhloup1

    Great song!! Weak ending

    Joe Kane

@dhloup1 weird you think that. It's one of my all time favourite endings of all time. Really emotional.

    cristylo80

The only bad thing about the ending is that it came too soon

    MagicalSkyWizard

In my professional opinion, youre a fucking lunatic

  44. harisongs

Dear Pete Ham, although my world is sadder and lonelier Without You, I find solace in the wonderful songs you wrote and recorded during your 27 short years on the planet. They are theraputic, they are inspirational, they are marvellous songs and performances. I discovered Badfinger through my lifelong love affair with The Beatles and boy has it been rewarding! I had those LPs revolve on my turntable Day After Day. I immersed myself in the grooves and derived extraordinary bliss. Infectious sound. Power Pop Perfection! To me, you were the most-gifted member of the band. The beauty of the music you created is Timeless and I Keep Believing your soul will Shine On No Matter What.

    Roy Angles

    what a great comment. Bless

    J. B

harisongs. I adore Badfinger. They infused life back into my bloodstream after I lost my father and my Beatles.

    Mike Walsh

THAT just totally brought me to tears, ...Pete was really great.

  45. sheila c

    Pete ham is hot!

    SR 0

sheila c. No he is not! Were did you heir that on fake news? Because that is a load of garbage and you know that too! So stop making things as you try to renegotiate with nothing else to say!

  46. Licha Tuñez

Me alegro que estemos 43 a 0, por que esta cancion es una obra de arte!! El reconocimiento que no tuvo Ham en Vida, lo va teniendo a medida que se siguen escuchando sus canciones!

  47. crapple009

A Chris Thomas production- would you expect anything less?

  48. SommieReturns

genius........ love you Pete!! R.I.P. , man..

  49. Stephen Davies

    You won't stand up/you won't sit down

Everclear's "Sunflowers" is reminiscent of this one... or influenced by... or whatever

  50. Stephen Davies

    There's a way, there's a way...

  51. Peggy Kozak

My God- how many incredible songs did these guys make? I am speechless. I listen to them, one after another, and grow more and more astounded by them.

  52. maplespak

    AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE!!!

  53. Mark OBLAZNEY

Beat-a-lesque??? Abbie Rhodes??? Unwinding the LSD songs, then to market, to sell a fat pig. Oinkus, doinkus, fella noynkus.

  54. Scott Harbison

It's so hard to fully enjoy such heartfelt music knowing what the ultimate outcome of Pete Ham's life so tragically became. The saving grace is that what he left us with was so timeless and priceless that what he gave may have been, ultimately, tragically, worth it. So sad...but SO appreciated by all of his fans! RIP, Pete!

  55. TheEDZEPPELINBAND

the sound on this record is so much improved over the earlier stuff-i ve never heard this one till now-i really am impressed-
no way it could be as good as "Straight Up'-.......I THOUGHT-

  56. barth4747

Pete Ham, a true genius, and very much missed...

    Joy Stinson

    barth4747 , an extraordinary talent

  57. orley104

how do I find more of this GREAT MUSIC? Sanity Records in Australia doesn't have that much. Which album is this off please?

  58. The Krayolas

I always loved Pete Ham, a huge talent. A friend of mine gave him a ride once in downtown San Antonio after the band played here.

  59. basscom77

    Great song

  60. basscom77
