Bad Religion - In Their Hearts Is Right Lyrics

There's something pathetic in the world today
And I don't know how it all began.
As if all the shame and punishment
Will finally make me understand.

A word means nothing wanting action.
Intentions are valuable as deeds.
And a wound can dog you for a lifetime,
Unless it only makes you bleed.

Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows now.

Everybody, everybody, everybody knows,
Everybody, everybody, everybody knows
What's in their heart is right.

I'm just a termite on an ant hill.
I think about it every single day.
A senseless being lacking inspiration,
Just waiting to be blown away.

Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows now.

Everybody, everybody, everybody knows,
Everybody, everybody, everybody knows
What's in their heart is right.

Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows,
Everybody (everybody, everybody) knows now.

Everybody, everybody, everybody knows,
Everybody, everybody, everybody knows,
Everybody, everybody, everybody knows,
Everybody, everybody, everybody knows
What's in their heart is right.

I like the round of vocals singing "Everybody." That's something different for Bad Religion

The thing I love about this song is that it's ambiguous; is he saying that we all know what's *universally* right? Or that everyone know's what's in *their* heart is right; that both sides of a conflict might just believe they are fighting for a universal truth that, in reality is only universal within their own heart/ideology? Brilliant stuff!

I'd have to disagree Grant, I believe the song is an open criticism of "everyone knowing what is in their heart is right". The song starts with saying that there is "something pathetic in the world today" citing both "shame and punishment". Bad Religion songs are (perhaps coldly?) logical, where-as knowing something in your heart would be passion(ate).

Consider "No Substance" (same song name as the album name) with the lyrics: "History doesn't make something right / Consensus is not a fact-based exercise". This indicates that even though a group of people can arrive at the same conclusion (ie: their "hearts" are all aligned) that it still does not equate to being factual.

Next consider "Popular Consensus" (from this True North album): "Maybe it's what you need to help you through the night / Maybe you've seen the light / But you know popular consensus doesn't make it right". Again, knowing something to be right "in your heart" doesn't actually make something right.

Returning to this song, the lyrics "Termite on an Ant Hill" is a reference to feeling out of place, not belonging, or being different. Termites are sometimes confused with ants and even designated as "white ants" or "wood ants" in comon phrases. The latin and late latin name termes ("woodworm, white ant"), even though they do not belong to the ant family. Greg with a PHD in zoology used this comparison to say, although he is similar in some aspects to the general populace of "ants", as a termite he is different - and he realizes his outlook is bleak ("Senseless being lacking inspiration / just waiting to be blown away"). Still, this outlook seems to be preferred to the "ant" life of "knowing what is in your heart to be right". Or perhaps, he could never be an "ant" as he is a "termite" - perhaps he can never join the "ant" colony. It sounds like he is alone on the ant hill, perhaps ostracized as well. He sounds defeated, with no direction, sense, or inspiration - and perhaps is being overwhelmed by despondency resulting from realizing his situation ("waiting to be blown away" - waiting to die?).

There are many other songs as well from Bad Religion that are of a similar vein: "Best for you", "Looking in", "Individual". I'd recommend those songs for comparison as well.

Anyways, that's just my take on it - the great thing about art is that it inspires each individual differently.

  9. A.... B....

wait wait wait... "Punk rock pioneers" these guys were cranking out albums while billie joe armstrong was still eating dirt in his back yard!

  10. r.... ....

A Band To Forget is not punk. And compare the sounds of POP punk to real punk such as this. Real punk is full of whiny emos like Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, and Blink 182 after they became popular.

How in the fuck does this sound like pop? It isn't even being played in my rock/alternative station

  11. J.... B....

    ummm.... huh?!?!?!?

  12. c.... ....

Right now there is a circle pit in my eardrums!

  13. b.... ....

Squeaky clean pop punk. Not saying it's bad. It's just the same shit they've been doing for years. I could see them fitting in with punk rawk pioneers such as Green Day and A Day To Remember.

    b.... ....

    lol are you an alien

  14. M.... ....

both songs verses feature the A-F-C-G progression up front. they each switch up on the turnaround back to the verse front.

  15. M.... ....
