Bad Religion - Dept. Of False Hope Lyrics

Welcome, my son,
To where the work is never done
And the hungry are seldom ever fed.

The department of false hope
Is a proving ground for dopes.
And they'll grind your tiny bones to make their bread. (Hosanna.)

So hold your head up high, forgotten man.
Tomorrow won't be made for you.
And everybody's gotta try to lend a helping hand.
For god and man, there's nothing more to do.

It crackled on the radio
Through bright plumes of the sun.
The announcer said the age of faith was dead.

Though the adolescent nation
Was just looking for salvation,
The beast of reason reared its ugly head. (Hosanna.)

So hold your head up high, forgotten man.
Tomorrow's not for me and you.
And everybody's gotta try to lend a helping hand.
For god and man, there's nothing more to do.

From your cradle of destruction,
With the poorest of instruction
And the merest sliver of a tune,
Oh, you managed somehow to muddle through.

So hold your head up high, forgotten man.
Tomorrow's not for me and you.
And everybody's gotta try to lend a helping hand.
For god and man, there's nothing more to do.

There is nothing more...

    Welcome now, son,
To where the work is never done
And the hungry are seldom ever fed
    The department of false hope
Is a proving ground for dopes
And they'll grind your tiny bones to make their bread
So hold your head up high, forgotten man
Tomorrow won't be made for you
And everybody's gonna try to lend a helping hand
Forgotten man, there's nothing more to do
    He crackled on the radio
Through bright plumes of the sun
The announcer said the age of faith was dead
    Though the adolescent nation
    Was just looking for salvation
The beast of reason reared its ugly head
So hold your head up high, forgotten man
Tomorrow's not for me and you
And everybody's gonna try to lend a helping hand
Forgotten man, there's nothing more to do
    From your cradle of destruction
    With the poorest of instruction
And nearest sliver of a tune
Oh, you managed somehow to muddle through
So hold your head up high, forgotten man
Tomorrow's not for me and you
And everybody's gonna try to lend a helping hand
Forgotten man, there's nothing more to do
    There is nothing more

  21. l.... c....

    Such a great album.

  22. l.... ....

Anyone else hear the musical allusions to John Lennon's "Imagine"? This song works almost like a cynical retort to that song.

  23. I.... ....

lol.... religious ads before bad religion videos.

    Irony at it's finest

  24. b.... ....

I've been pondering these lyrics, and your assessment of them, and just now it reminded me of this:

"Your enemy is never a villain in his own eyes. Remember this, as it may offer a way to make him your friend. If not, you can kill him quickly and without hate."

    – Robert Heinlein

  25. g.... ....

    The Skyscraper of True North!

  26. s.... w....

    for now

  27. s.... w....

Fully agree with the RFH and ATG references! Specially the riffs in Crisis Time sounds from recipe for sure!! The old school vibe and the continuation of the Dissent are so apparent in the whole album. Its amazing!!
I think Im at 14 times too but kinda lost counts, march 30th will be one more time!!
    Beware the modern men !!

  28. B.... M....

so jealous! i hear recipe for hate in this album too! that was my first BR album and my favorite so it's no wonder i really dig this album, this song in particular.

  29. C.... R....

    Dig this one, Plenty!

  30. J.... S....

Ohhh yeah the greatest punk band of all time is back this songs kicks ass

  31. M.... S....

Saw them live 14 times...great band. This album is a cross between Against the Grain and Recipe for Hate.....

  32. t.... ....

This is the best song of the Album!!

  33. b.... ....

So much wisdom and such stunning empathy on display here...

    Absolutely incredible.

  34. F.... J....

  35. s.... w....

One of my favorite ! A cry for salvation from being ripped off by the govrnmnt . Is nt it ?

  36. D.... H....

    its a good thing hahaha

  37. N.... ....

"Hosannah!": Mr. Brett finally goes back to his jewish roots and sings hebrew :D

  38. S.... R....

This is why I WON'T GROW UP atleast not until my son is able to truly appreciate why his dad knows what awesome sounds, feels and looks like. This is why I'm here.

  39. z.... ....

Aww yeah! Thanks, walking down memory lane! Also, cheers to Epitaph for putting the whole thing on here!

  40. t.... ....

Greg's vocals are just so excellent.

  41. L.... S....

me gusta, mucho! super geiler song! high intensity punk!

  42. j.... ....

    Very nice No Direction reference

  43. p.... ....

Very interesting song choice. It seems to be about the right wing fear of a "hyper-rational" state. Which is why bad religion is so awesome, because despite being rationalists, they can understand and relate to that fear. Makes me think of the twilight zone episode "The Obsolete Man."

  44. G.... C....

...And there goes three months followed, hearing the same songs from the same album. During this time, just wishing, "praying" to them never stop making great music.

  45. C.... ....

And play some of the B-lists that are better than the A-lists like Shattered Faith and Markovian Process.

I am getting flashbacks of wearing away the back button (replay) on my diskman back in the day. Great song.

  46. S.... ....

This is probably my favorite song off the album. Great stuff, listening to it on loop.

  47. d.... ....

And just like that I've listened more to this album than I have the last two. Good shit guys -- now please play the LONG VERSION of Along the Way when you come to SF! That means twice through, double-time the second time! Puhlease?! This Bad Religion song will make my life complete!

  48. t.... ....

    yes, masterpiece

  49. V.... P....

    Masterpiece
