Bad Brains - Destroy Babylon Lyrics
Don't beat yourself upside the head.
Don't beat yourself for this.
Don't beat yourself upside the head,
Don't beat yourself for this.
Oh, there is a way out.
How many days do we sit around,
While they keep on burying all our leaders in the ground.
Organize, centralize.
It's time for us to fight for our lives.
Destroy Babylon.
Oh there is a way.

MASH DOWN BABYLON 🤘☇✊☇🖕
What do the lyrics actually mean? Back then and especially right now in this modern day and age?
From a historical perspective. Explain it to me.
@Zarion 11
I owe you an apology. I should have spoken up about Rasta right away instead of my original condescending response. I'm sorry. Peace & One Love.
It is all good. Cheers bro.
The rasta conception of Babylon is linked to the deportation of the Hebrews as told in the Old Testament. Later, in Christian times, Babylon, "the Great Whore", came to symbolize Rome, its persecution of Christians and its corruption, in the Book of Revelation. So to Rastas, it came to represent the world of slavery and oppression, and by extension the corruption, alienation and destruction of the capitalist system.
You know if you just wanted to know what Babylon means historically and in Rasta terms, you could easily do an online search and come to your own conclusions.
This is a good page here: https://islandpen.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/what-does-babylon-mean-in-reggae/
I think this part is what Babylon refers to in this song and in most reggae songs: "“Babylon” refers to the system built on slavery i.e. the global free market/globalization system."
But with an emphasis on the evil and corruption pervasive in the world.
Babylon = anything in power aka govt
