Bad Books - Lake House Lyrics

All the lake houses were moving
They were spinning around in the lake
They were shark-infested waters
They were dangerous places to play
You approached me like a brother
Told me "all that you see isn't true"
A shark pops out of the water
A crucifix carved in his tooth
There was one song left, repeated
As I drifted off, grazing your leg
It was tough to tell your motive
You were stuck between no and a yes
When I woke, I saw your anchor
Pierce through the top of my spine
That I pushed too far to recover
As I'm living on borrowing time
When you showed up you were glowing
Taking my last breath away
On the arm of some opponent
Gushing at each word he says
When I asked to speak about it
You made it real easy for me
Just because we have a baby
Doesn't mean that you belong to me
Oh, and if I ever lose you
If that horrible day ever comes
I don't know how I'd recover
I don't know what race I'd run
But I know that I'd love you
The day that we swore on that ring
The day that we swore on that ring

Bad Books Lake House Comments

I think 3 is the most halfass album they’ve released.

Musically beautiful. So pumped for Bad Books III . Does anyone else feel like this song is the most esoteric, trite lyrics of Hull’s so far?

I’m a huge fan, but sometimes it’s like he’s trying not to make sense. I looked at this song from a metaphorical point of view and it made some sense, but sometimes he is just all over the place lyrically and he needs to have more concise collected ideas in his songs.

Peter R. Completey disagree. I think I understand every Manchester and RAGC Song Perfectly. I’ve never gotten into Bad Books, but I like the two I’ve heard from this album. These lyrics are more like him in RAGC and maybe even I Know How To Speak, he is finding the most concise way to do it, on an Avett Brothers scale. I’d like to know what you mean though to be honest. I’ve met Andy numerous times and he is a really solid dude, like Conor, they are private, but I guess I’m the same way, so I understand. I’ve written a lot and I’d like to put out a Bio on Andy one day; I think he is the best songwriter in his prime right now. Like Radiohead, Idk if he will ever fall off, I hope not.

I have smart friends who were in gifted with me and have always heard my music and read my Hunter S. Thompson type shit and there are girls who were in gifted with me that say, “I think you try to confuse people.” It’s all very interesting to me. I’d love to know why you mean regarding previous lyrics. Cheers Brother!

Is the Right Away, Great Captain! Trilogy anything but Concise & Collected Ideas? I’m working hard on getting my James Murphy + Run The Jewels on and I wonder what you mean. Let’s Go Digging.

    Peter R.

Fink Sinatra I know what you mean. RAGC at least has an overarching story that you can key together.

But the lyrics on this track are definitely esoteric. For example, What does “grazing your leg” mean? You’d have to know Hull to know what he’s talking about. This isn’t necessarily bad. Hull has always been very self aware (hence songs like “I am Aware”) but sometimes he talks about his own life in either metaphorical or hard to understand ways that are hidden from full comprehension. This song is like this up until the line “just because we have a baby...”

Pitchfork explains this difficulty in the incoherency of his songwriting rather well here with the review of Black Mile to the Surface: https://www.google.com/amp/s/pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/manchester-orchestra-a-black-mile-to-the-surface/amp/

The visuals are next level. Who needs an official music video when this is more fitting than any music video from other bands ive seen. Pure aesthetics. For a very beautiful song.
