It is beautifully sad that it was all about a lonely martian dude on his Dream Sequence...because he wanted to feel emotions.

No, you don't understand. That voice at the end saying "Emotions, I remember" wasn't the Colonist from Universal Migrator. It was Forever of the Stars from Into the Electric Castle. In 01011001, it's sort of explained that during the Age of Shadows, the Forever race lost all emotions, which was mentioned in Into the Electric Castle. FOTS says that the whole Electric Castle thing was an experiment the Forever set up to regain emotions. The plot twist at the end of this song reveals that this album was also an experiment by the Forever to regain emotions. That's all I can say. I am a bit confused about the ending. Was it actually a Forever inside a Dream Sequencer going through a simulation in order to remember what emotions were like?

Yes, the story of Human Equation never really happened in Ayreon universe, it is just a computer simulation, created by Sequencer.

Ironically, emotionless alien Forever of the Stars is the only real, conscious character here, while all humans are actually just computer bots without consciousness.

@Сергей Чаплин But how can bots without consciousness express emotions as we can see throughout the album? Forever of the stars couldn't program the bots to do that since it would require understanding emotions in the first place. Or do I miss something?

@Steak Saignant Forever used the Dream Sequencer from the Mars Colony, so it means that Human Equation program was originally created by human Martian scientists. As I understand, it is a kind of "movie", and all these people ("Me", "Best Friend", "Wife" etc) are like characters from the movie/book/computer game - all their actions and emotions were written by human author. They simply follow the screenplay, but don't really think or feel anything. Of course I can be mistaken, because the ending still looks somehow unclear and it isn't explained how exactly this Human Equation program works, but so far I didn't find any proofs that this story ever happened in Ayreon universe for real.

@Сергей Чаплин Yeah I know were just speculating here but I like your theory! It would make sense to make a guy live a human-written story and analyse his emotional response. Especially since stories are often designed to make us feel all kind of emotions

In fact that's why my favourite characters from the album are personified emotions (since they are fantastic, imaginary creatures from the very beginning and don't pretend to be "real"). As for human characters - I can't take them seriously. I see this entire story more as a scientific research of different emotions but not as real drama.

If you liked this album, i absolutely have to recommend the live version of it with many of its original singers, recorded in 2015 and titled: "Ayreon - The Theater Equation". It was done in a full blown out theatre where singers also became actors.

I've just listened to this album for the first time, but on vinyl.
I freaked out at the end when i heard the Dream Sequencer and wondered, WHAT THE HELL?

I don't even speak Portuguese but I have to say this must have taken a long time to translate for every song, thanks for your hard work.

Needs more Fear if you know what i mean

I listened to this as a kid. The whole album, hours and hours, straight through. I've always cried a lot with music like this. And boy I cried. I'm 20 years old now, still cry like a baby. Something about the composition just gets me. It's pretty corny, honestly, when you look at it objectively, but somehow this is still one of the most influential and great songs for me.

I think it's the journey. This song in and of itself is pretty cheesy, but it's the final step. He's gone through all of these emotions and thoughts, relived his life and been under constant barrage from the various sides of his personality, even the mark his father set in him.
He's finally awake, having chosen a life of shame, pain and regret, but also a life with love and friendship.

The entire story reaches a crescendo here that they absolutely did not waste.
My friend introduced me to this album in 2013 and I also cried during several parts of it. I was a 22 year old at the time. It's a beautiful piece of rock opera.

In 2008 (I was 18) I listened this song (and album) like 999999 times, it made my musical preferencies for whole life. My friends hated me, I'm always talked about Ayreon and Dream Theater) Thank you, Arjen!)

Such a good closer to an incredible album. I absolutely love that last minute where each singer just belts it out. When Arjen finishes an album with a vocal sampling of each of his vocalists going full force, it makes magic. It somehow, sums up their contribution to the album and lets them show the unique qualities they brought to the creation. Brilliant.

Biggest PLOT TWIST in prog history, what an ending to a mindblowing album. This is the frist Ayreon work I heard and it was all I needed to become a fan

Yes, Forever Of The Stars from Into The Electric Castle did this simulation, maybe with the help of a Dream Sequencer machine, or through the man on Mars, who was in a Dream Sequencer Machine.

Dream Sequencer technology was given to humans by Forevers through dreams or by leaving technology on Mars.

IIRC, there was a line in the "sixth extinction" song, where one of the forever says "We must resolve this human equation, we're already dead if we do not try."

I think this album is technically after 01011001, right after the sixth extinction or later, even though the universal migrator visits them after the last colonist pre-incarnates into one of the first souls.

+Mazaroth I'm agreed. Still more, if you think that all Ayreon's albums are precuels of the last album since Universal Migrator. It makes more sense to this theory. (Except The Theory of Everything because it's a story apart)
