Avett Brothers, The - True Sadness Lyrics

You were a friend to me when my wheels were off the track
I know you say there is no need, but I intend to pay you back
When my mind was turning loose and all my thoughts were turning black
You shined a light on me and I intend to pay you back

When I was a child, I depended on a bottle
Full-grown I've been known to lean on a bottle
But you're the real deal in a world of imposters
And I've seen the program make men out of monsters

'Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness

Adam and Eve must have really done a number
On that garden when the apple was finished
Leaving behind them a den made of sadness
A damage that can't or won't be replenished

'Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness

Angela became a target
As soon as her beauty was seen
By young men who try to reduce her down
To a scene on an X rated screen

Is she not more than the curve of her hips?
Is she not more than the shine on her lips?
Does she not dream to sing and to live and to dance down her own path
Without being torn apart?
Does she not have a heart?

I cannot go on with this evil inside me
I step out my front door and I feel it surround me
Just know the kingdom of God is within you
Even though the battle is bound to continue

'Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness

My friend Angela committed suicide in November. All because some selfish men tore her spirit apart time and time again. All she ever wanted was to be loved and give love. She was the best friend I've ever had and deserved happiness more than anyone I know. This song really touches my 💚

    ADAM DUERWACHTER

Molly Davis Duerwachter did you add a verse?

    Adriano Bildhauer

    Didn’t get that

    William Stokes

    Thank you

  40. freddie hoffman

I thought this was a really shitty round or something until I realized I had the same song open on two different tabs lol whoops

  41. Chad Smiley

    musically, this didn't grab me

but lyrically, whoever wrote this had something to say.

and I really dig it. their poetry is a part of them that always has and still does grab me.

    A Thing By Jacob Warner

Chad Smiley I kind of see the music as a sad man hiding behind a happy tune.
I think it works well with the verses; practically melancholic.

    claudia valdovinos

    Chad Smiley same

    suburbanindie

Topin absolutely.  It's funny because usually lyrics are the last thing I care about, but when they're really well-written (think Squeeze, Elvis Costello, Elliott Smith) then they become that much more important.

The happy tune with sad lyrics is sort of a metaphor for how if you "peel off the layers you will find true sadness"

    bowthing

Agree. it's a simple tune that talks to people in recovery. I like it a lot. The great thing about this band is its like what you would do with the guys at home.

    Chad Feenstra

Similar to ‘Hey Ya’. Upbeat song with less than upbeat lyrics

  42. Gggh Hhjy

damn drinking is a bitch. Right on yall

    Silver Fox

Yes it is, I'm recovering, and very , very thankful for recovery and this song is awesome.

    Lisa Melisa

"I've seen the program make men out of monsters"

  43. Electric Fangs

full thing is on my channel if you're interested in some new tunes. Its

    reviews on here. mahalo

  44. Tex Sax

Am still on LI and blowing horns. Let's lay some tracks - flute and sax.

  45. Joanna Lamb

I see some comments down there saying this song is just meeting "status quo".. But this is the first song I've ever heard by them and I think it's beautiful; the message is absolutely beautiful. Its nothing like the inane songs that you hear on mainstream radio. This song has real heart and I feel it. I love the stanza about Angela. it touched my heart, the emotion you can hear in his voice when he sings those lines about her. About how men sexualize women so much and forget that they are thinking and feeling human beings as well, they are also children of God. And just the message this song sends out about Christianity is so lovely, his developing relationship with God. it's so simple and yet there's so much more to it. I love it. Thank you for bringing me closer to God today, Avett Bros. It's easy to forget that He's there when times become rough.

    Mac McFall

    Well put! Thank you.

  46. Midnight_Dark2002

im here bc i heard this playing in target

    Ma5tiff

they should change the name of the target store to satanic circumspect.

    Ma5tiff

    *satanic CIRCUMPUNCT.

    (excuse me, please)

    Ma5tiff

The target logo is a satanic circumpunct. fuck the freemasons.

  47. Rifdy Samsudin

This is ironic, it's making me smile :)

  50. Chasity Ostrowski

    Thank you....God bless

  51. Seth Tschetter

I really like this song....but man this does not even compare to the live version

  52. Peter MacInnis

    Rick Rubin ruined it.
TOo bad they wouldn't record with Ethan Johns

    Darrell Brock

Johns would have ruined it, thank God for Rubin.

    rat crickets

Hahaha bro I agree Rick rubins production is lame but the songs are too good to be ruined by that

  53. Timo de Jong

Is it me or is there some seeerious audio clipping going on on all these new tracks?

  54. Mariella Gutierrez

"Is she not more than the curve of her hips?
Is she not more than the shine on her lips?
Does she not dream to sing and to live and to dance down her own path
    Without being torn apart?
Does she not have a heart?"

    Love this song.

    Randall Hawes

Mariella Gutierrez that part always gets me too!

    Randall Hawes

Mariella Gutierrez that part always gets me too!

    Tate Van Cleve

So poignant, beautifully written. The whole song actually, but that verse stands above the rest as most relevant in today's world.

    tree !

    Amen...Love Mother God

    Paddy Jay12

I think the beauty of the sounds are; it's written with sad lyrics to an upbeat tempo.. Genius

  55. irenicum

The lyrics of this song bring me to tears. So powerful.

  56. tawni bartram

Something different but I love it. There isn't anything that I haven't absolutely loved that they have made...& the message they send in their songs and lyrics, always goes straight to my heart... If it didnt, i wouldnt have named my only son Avett :)

  57. Tom Super

i feel like seth is behind these new songs because he has a tendency toward being cheesy.

  58. 3footputt1

Could it be? Yes...True Sadness makes me smile and gives me joy!

  59. dolphwolf

great song until the breakdown. what a bunch of White Knight nonsense. pretty women have it soooooo hard

    300MediaProductions

+dolphwong Evolution is such an easy answer. It removes all influence you and those around you have had on the current state the world is in. It's a great, easy, catch all for anything wrong. I'll remind you that evolution was and is a main topic used for racism. Evolution isn't an answer. Responsibility and kindness, those are answers.

    dolphwolf

Newborn babies stare at pretty faces longer than they do ugly ones. I suppose society is to blame for that as well

    Kronos Dorma

+dolphwong "Aint no man". Maybe listen to that instead of spouting out an emotional argument

    dolphwolf

Is that a different song or a line that I missed in this song?

    Kronos Dorma

    +dolphwong different song.

  60. Stella Apple

Dear God this is amazing, going to buy the album now. People on Itunes complaining about shit, saying this doesn't sound like the Avetts, ha! This is gold! Love you guys! <3 Keep on doing you and I'm going to keep on buying your albums and tickets to your shows!

  61. Michele Todd

I've been sunk in depression for a couple of weeks and when I heard "does she not have a heart" it lifted my spirit somehow. I'll miss you guys in Colorado for the first time in years, but I can live with that true sadness. Just keep singing to me.

  62. Drew Charpentier

once again, to be growing up with this music, thru maniac emotions to slower thinking is cause for celebration. never take it for granted. lembas bread for your ears, reminding one of rivendell while stuck in heavy traffic under the blazing great eye. AH! Thank you.

  63. Iamdynamite

I miss the time it was just a couple of dudes banging on their banjos and guitars, stomping on their kick drums. Evolution I suppose.

    3footputt1

+BanjoBandit Love it! "There is no wrong form of Avett" TRUTH!

    Cookie Monster

    Is this country or indie?

    Raven Bird

    +Cookie Monster folk rock actually

    Virginia Plain

What country should be, not the dreck from people with over exaggerated southern accents.

    cason211

I got the joke, Iamdynamite... nobody else did apparently. Lol

  64. Erica Bellamy

This song sucks and I love the avert brothers were is the energy man

    Garrett Hill

+Erica Bellamy some songs are about the energy but this song is about the lyrics.

    Alex VM

+Garrett Hill Yeah, I completely agree. I was not entirely happy with this song when I first heard it. The music is a little overproduced and lacks the simple beauty that much of their old music has. Still after listening to this song several times, I can say firmly that I like it because the lyrics are absolutely masterful.

  65. Judd Daniel

"depended on the bottle" good stuff brothers !

  66. Matt R

    Great recovery song !

    Miriam Van Harn

I was just thinking this! And I'm loving all the new music :)

    irenicum

    Oh my goodness, yes.

    Rachel Packe

yes " I've seen the program make men out of monsters"

    Ham Hampton

"Even though the battle is bound to continue.."

  67. hannah garst

This is dreadful. Avett Brothers what happened?? I remember when your music was beautifully inspiring. Who are you trying to be?

    Alex VM

+hannah garst Ok, I know exactly what you mean, but the album has not been released yet. They have released songs with a similar sound to this one before and people had the same reaction. I would argue that this song is still good because of the beautiful lyrics even if it lacks the band's traditional style.

    HHH5723

hannah garst this song is a jam I love it sounds good to me dope drum beat dope ass bass line good lyrics good guitar rhythm

  68. tvcprsspe

Can't wait for the album! Thanks for filling me with joy with every single song :)

  69. Billy Proffitt

Great song, but it feels like the album version lacks the same energy as their live versions. Still love it though.

    Neat Monster

+Billy Proffitt I love a lot of their songs live, but for me, this studio version is better than the live electric. But they really can't do any wrong, so doesn't really matter I guess :)

    Josh Todd

I've got that same feeling. I thought that about Ain't No Man and I've got the same feeling here. I wonder if I'd feel the same if I hadn't heard the live versions first lol.

  70. Sam Anderson

You guys were amazing at the Greek Theatre last week! Best concert I've ever been to. I could have listened to you guys perform all night.

  71. Megan

    YES!!!!!!!!

  72. Lattie Hugh

    love this.
    #ODAAT

  73. Zachary Bailey

I have such mixed feelings about this...

    Hunter Johnson

+300MediaProductions correct, that's what I'm saying. They've been playing this style of song live long before it's been on a record

    Chelsea Yanga

+notsure24duce Thank you for putting it into words. Very correct and very well-written.

    Raven Bird

they actually were going to make this song a little different

    Anti Zakkonic

Lyrics are good, need someone(s) who doesn't sound 16 years old to do it.

    Johnny 5 Cents

+Zachary Bailey Couldn't have said it better myself. Although I always fancied the Avett Broothers over Mumford and Sons, I think there's a parallel to what happened to the both of them. I remember seeing them first perform with Bob Dylan at the Grammy's and my world was blown. I had no idea folk sound was making such a huge resurgence, one that truly took folk further in new and yet consistent directions. Their new albums (both AB and MaS) simply are not continuations in that same quality line. It is undeniably pop in the negative sense of that word

  74. Matthew Jacob Olivares

    can't wait for this album

  75. Jack Cayman

    Love you guys!

  76. mary kelly allen

I was having a bad day while sitting in research class, then saw that you released this gem- thank you!!!

  77. Casey Compton

This album is going to be off of the freaking chain.

    Nikless Terrai

    Totally agree

  78. Jeepdude33

Cant start a weekend better than with a new avett song. keep rocking

    J Allen

It'd put you to sleep...if you have no attention span.

    Paddy Jay12

    B absolutely loved his comment!

  79. macfae

thank you ! so happy 💆

  80. hunterbarnes77

    It's about time!

  81. edpenn13
