Avett Brothers, The - Through My Prayers Lyrics

Hard to believe I won't see you again
We were just fighting when winter began
The coldness of our words competing with the wind from the north

Still they make me shiver but in a very different way
The pages of the calendar kept turning away
I have some better words now but it's too late to say them to you

My dream of all dreams and my hope of all hopes
Is only to tell you and make sure you know
How much I love you and how much I always did

And yes, I know you loved me I could see it in your eyes
And it was in your struggle and it was in your mind
And it was in the smile you gave me when I was a kid

Feels like no one understands
And now my only chance
To talk to you is through my prayers
I only wanted to tell you I cared

Every night after and every day since
I found myself crying when the memory hits
Sometimes it knocks me down, sometimes I can just put it away

Down in my mind where I don't care to go
The pain of a lesson is letting me know
If you have love in your heart let it show while you can

Yes now I understand
But now my only chance
To talk to you is through my prayers
I only wanted to tell you I cared
I only wanted to tell you I cared

Avett Brothers, The Through My Prayers Comments
  1. J.... A....

A woman I hoped to marry, was brutally murdered in a murder/suicide by the guy she chose over me. This song was included in her tribute video. It seems written for the two of us.

  2. S.... D....

This is the best song in the whole world!

Today is the anniversary of the birth and death of our son, Stephen. He would have been 29. I was lying in bed in the dark when out of nowhere the image of that lady ( 1:14 ) came into my mind. I just had to watch this video again. The song is deeply touching but it's made more so by the inclusion of that lady. Her tears were flowing, as are mine.

  4. B.... J....

It wasn't this song that wrecked me at their concert, but I've never been brought to tears in a live concert before. Thanks, Seth and Scott, we all need a good cry once in awhile.

  5. G.... ....

My brother died 2 weeks ago and I’ve listened to this song more than I ever have. Healing and heart wrenching all in one.

This song and Cats in the Cradle should become part of every single school curriculum. No grades. They should be mandatory listening. The lyrics of each should be dissected and put out there for every young mind to absorb, appreciate and take to heart. Lord knows they may or may not be heard at home, but the message of both songs are powerful enough to change lives in more meaningful ways than any math exercise. These lyrics are a true form of education to be shared for generations.

Meaningful music lives on here. To Scot and Seth, my deep and profound thanks.

I lost my oldest sister last year in May and my Mom (who was my world) five months and 4 days later in October. I still cry every day and this song is almost as if it’s came from my very soul!

  8. K.... R....

One of their most beautiful songs. I think of my dad whenever I hear this song. Same for Murder in the City. I am thankful that the audience let them play with very little howling that seems to always occur at their shows, especially during emotional songs like this.

  9. J.... C....

My best friend Joe unexpectedly passed away a few years ago and this song (amongst others) has said what I wanted to say.

I am not the same since he left.

    I never will be.

But I’m so very lucky that I knew him for as long as I did.

  10. M.... B....

Who are the 18 people who sit on the roof of their car without much regard for the moon and the stars !

  11. B.... H....

To my Mom, my Dad, my Best friend, and even my dog Dante. I miss you so much.

    B.... H....

    I'm so sorry Brad. :(

  12. T.... A....

How does this not have ten million views? This is art. This is poetry. This is real.

  13. M.... G....

My Grandma! This makes me think of my Grandma. She was my constant point of affection, no matter what. She's been gone about 8 years now and I miss her so much, I cry every time I think about her even after all that time. Thanks for being able to put such personal feelings to music since most of us can't do that!!

  14. D.... B....

LIFE IS FLEETING. ENJOY IT WHEN WE HAVE IT! LOVE THE BROTHERS THANKS FOR THE TALENT!

  15. M.... J....

The cello - pulls at the heart strings.

Man would I ever love to tell y'all about all the people in my life that have passed away. But the mere telling of that story would be a feat reminiscent of the Shakespear, Not that I'm comparing my self to Shakespear or anything. Only that I did Shakespearing theater in Highschool and would recite the entire play everyday in the shower (Much ado about nothing, I played Benedict. (the lead not to tut my own horn or anything)) anyho I was relating the telling of death and grief that I've seen. Shits sad, you know I worked as a volunteer grief counsolur during the summers, in that experience I have seen some truly heart-rending things. Nothing will make an adult ball quite like eating lunch with a bunch of happy kids and then going outside to talk about the reason for their bereivment. Love hte song, not sure what to make of this whole youtube thing though seeing as this is officialy my first comment! is there a limit to characters? Can I go on forever? I'm so used to twitter with the limit and all. Are there #Hashtags? is that a thing here too? I really don't know. Please don't scroll past this, I could really use some help with this whole youtube thing right now

I don't have a sad story of losing someone to post to this comment section. So forgive me..... But the amount of feeling that this song puts out is amazing. Its dripping, absolutely gushing, with regret. But also a hint of peace, of knowing that one day they will be reunited. But until then the only way they can feel some closure is through prayer. All of it is similar to what most of us will go through losing a loved one. Especially since life is taken so sudden at times that we don't have a chance to make any wrongs right, or to say what we have always felt for that person in our hearts. We just assume, and hope, that they know. But to have the ability to capture those feelings into words, and put it to music so beautiful, is incredible. It's an awesome song. The writing of these two brothers never ceases to absolutely amaze me.

Charles B I lost my father, and this song grabs hold of my heart. For someone never having personally experienced that range of emotion you expressed it well.

  33. L.... H....

  34. R.... E....

My friend Tina sent this to me while I was struggling through my 16th wedding anniversary. My husband passed just before our anniversary (and my sister passed 10 days before) If there ever was a song that could describe the pain of losing someone you love so very very much....THIS is it! Thanks Avert Brothers for creating it and thank you Tina for sharing it with me.

  35. J.... L....

My son, Preston, died almost 18 years ago. I cried when I heard this. His memory seeps into my mind every day. Thank you for another great song, Scott and Seth.

I'm truly sorry... You're in my prayers.

    J.... L....

My heart goes out to you Jean!!! I too always think of my son when I hear this song. He was killed barely 3 years ago. One of my identical twin boys. Part of my heart forever missing. But this song says so much, great beauty in each lyric, the sound, harmonies, it soothes my soul and I hope it does the same fir you! Hugs momma 🤗

  36. J.... L....

I watched my mother die in a hospital room almost two years ago. 52 years old. I feel your pain. This song speaks to many people on many levels. God bless you. It’ll be alright, they always hear you.

  38. V.... M....

I just watched them perform this song live a few days ago and it was soo beautiful. I lost my nephews almost 10 years ago he was only 1 year younger than me and although there have been other songs in the past that I could relate to when it comes to pain of losing him this song really really resonated with me. It captured the pain of losing a loved one perfectly.
