Average White Band - I Heard It Through The Grapevine Lyrics

Baby I know
I heard it through
I heard I through
I heard it through
Said, I heard it through the grapevine
Oh baby
I bet you're wondering, how I knew
About your plans to make me blue
With some other guy you knew before
Between the two of us guys, you know love you more
You took me by surprise
When I heard you just met yesterday
Don't you know heard it through the grapevine
Not that sure you'll be mine
I heard it through the grapevine
And honey, I'm about to lose my mind
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be mine
Ooh you know a man ain't suppose to cry
But these tears I can't hold inside
Losing you would end my life you see

Because you mean that much to me
You could have told me yourself
That you've gone and found someone else
Instead I heard it through the grapevine, that no longer would you be mine
I heard it through the grapevine, honey I'm just about to lose my mind
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be mine
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be, my baby
People say they hide from what you see
So, in love with what you hear
I've been hurt I've been confused
But if it's true, won't you tell me dear
Do you plan to let me go
For another guy who says he loves you more
'Cause I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be mine
I heard it through the grapevine, and honey I'm just about to lose my mind
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be, my baby
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be, my baby
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be, my baby

Average White Band I Heard It Through The Grapevine Comments
  1. Gloria Johnson

What happened to the sound??!! Had sound last year!! Darn. Looked forward to listening to this in 2020. This version is better than Gladys and Marvin. Please fix the audio on this precious jewel.

  2. pichmolm

    No sound?

  3. mrbertiep1

Had the pleasure of hearing AWB play this tune in LA joined by the Tower of Power horns. 😊 RIP Malcolm "Molly"Duncan.

  4. Farmerjon Johnson

Great Great musicians who could play and sing and write. No auto-tune, vo-coders or ear pieces, just straight up artistry.

  5. Gogo Singer

The grooviest bass player I've ever seen, plus his voice is great!

  6. dognasty3

    Straight fire!!!

  7. Special K

    I Like It!!!

  8. G Hiddles

WOW...Still sounds Great even 40 yrs later!!! Best music ever. AWB did an awesome job on this song. Did not think anyone could do it as well or better than Gladys Knight or Marvin...but AWB is def in running for best version. LOVE THIS...and all their music. Thanks for sharing this with us. Brings back great memories of the good ol' days and hot music.

  9. Great Kids

Gee ... the only group that can play music today, that I know, from this new era, is Bruno Mars and his gang. But nobody can touch the old school music. Born in 1962, I was exposed to some great stuff in the 60's, 70's, and 80's ..... I feel sorry for the young folks today. They do not even know what it is like to not be "connected" always to their cell phones. We had radios, records, AM and FM radio. NO information overload. We lived different back then. There was a note at home from mom, if someone wanted to reach you. Ha!

  10. Great Kids

Ok, trying now to compare this version to the one from CCR. Let's see AWB ... lay it down!

  11. rob kelsaw

    Lenny Castro Percussionist !!!!!!!

    M&Ibooth

No that's Sammy Figueroa ! Lenny is a west coast session percussionist, AWB recorded in and used east coast (NYC) musicians.

  17. Dryadsoul

Originally recorded by Smokey Robinson and the miracles in 1966. That is way in the pocket for a matched grip.

Is this origionally Marvin Gaye's or Chaka Chans song?

    Bkkersey93

    Marvin gaye did it first

    David Johnson

+blake kersey No actually Gladys Knight, and The Pips recorded it first on Tamla Records, a Motown subsidiary.

    greatbyrondo

Marvins' version was the best one.

    RrawzZ

Dionne Warwick did this too, prolly before AWB did it & I thought that was the 1st version... She did a lot of Burt Bacharack (sp?) tunes....
