Autumn, Emilie - 4 o'Clock Lyrics

4 o'Clock
4 o'Clock
Never let me sleep
I close my eyes and pray
For the garish light of day
Like a frightened child I run
From the sleep that never comes

4 o'Clock
4 o'Clock
Out of bed I creep
To climb this tower of shame
But the hour's still the same
Only madness knows my name
At 4 o'Clock

4 o'Clock
4 o'Clock
Never let me sleep
I close my eyes and pray
For the garish light of day
Like a frightened child I run
From the sleep that never comes

4 o'Clock
4 o'Clock
Out of bed I creep
To climb this tower of shame
But the hour's still the same
Only madness knows my name
At 4 o'Clock

Why can we never go back to bed?
Whose is the voice ringing in my head?
Where is the sense in these desperate dreams?
Why should I wake when I'm half past dead?

Sure as the clock keeps its steady chime
Weak as I walk to its steady rhyme
Ticking away from the ones we love
So many girls, so little time

Why can we never go back to bed?
Whose is the voice ringing in my head?
Where is the sense in these desperate dreams?
Why should I wake when I'm half past dead?

4 o'Clock
4 o'Clock
Never let me sleep
I close my eyes and pray
For the garish light of day
Like a frightened child I run
From the sleep that never comes

4 o'Clock
4 o'Clock
Out of bed I creep
To climb this tower of shame
But the hour's still the same
Only slumber never came
Only madness knows my name
At 4 o'Clock

Why can we never go back to bed?
Whose is the voice ringing in my head?
Where is the sense in these desperate dreams?
Why should I wake when I'm half past dead?

Sure as the clock keeps its steady chime
Weak as I walk to its steady rhyme
Ticking away from the ones we love
So many girls, so little time

Why can we never go back to bed?

I close my eyes and pray,

I love the madness in this song. The sense of insanity and nightmarish-ness caused by the insomnia that seemingly comes with the hour of 4 o'clock feels so real and is so skillfully created; I can really feel the maddening sleeplessness that I picture gradually seeping into an insomniac's mind as wide-awake hours of darkness tick slowly by. I feel like there's so much more to this song than just the insomnia that I imagine when I listen to it, and in fact if anybody else understands the full meaning of this song I'd love to hear it explained. But even regardless of the eerie lyrics or even the music itself, it's that feeling I get from this song that makes it for me. It just has this crazed and dreamlike quality that for some reason reminds me of Alice In Wonderland, which is one of my favorite stories. I'm just so intrigued by this right now.

+Ellie X I'm pretty sure it's talking about the insomnia that often comes in a mania, when someone is bipolar. You want to sleep, but your body won't let you because you're out of control. Something like that. It's not just the insomnia, it's the mania.

0 dislikes? That's something you don't see everyday. But, It's an amazing song. I don't blame the votes! <3

  17. T.... ....

Am I the only person who think this could be made into an epic dubstep/techno/house song? I so deeply adore this original but I would love to see this at a fast pace as well.

    T.... ....

    Listen at 1.5 speed XD

    T.... ....

I feel like this comment is cancerous.

  18. K.... C....

This song has to be influenced by The Phantom Of The Opera. The "garish light of day" line and 2:09... it sounds like it <3

    K.... C....

I was thinking the exact same thing :D
