Audrey Assad - Deliverer Lyrics

You are not possessive, You respect all things
You are not invasive, You have no envy
You are not insistent, You do not force me
You are not controlling, You make me free indeed

You're my deliverer
You're my deliverer
You won't pass me by
You're my deliverer
You're my deliverer
You won't pass me by

Your law is freedom and mercy is Your rule
Though You dwell within me, I can't contain You

You're my deliverer
You're my deliverer
You won't pass me by
You're my deliverer
You're my deliverer
You won't pass me by

In the ruins of my heart, You preach to the poor
Turning over stones to show me there is more
More than all I ask, more than I'm looking for
In the ruins of my heart
In the ruins of my heart, You preach to the poor
Turning over stones to show me there is more
More than all I ask, more than I'm looking for
In the ruins of my heart

You're my deliverer
You're my deliverer
You won't pass me by
You're my deliverer
You're my deliverer
You won't pass me by
You're my deliverer
You're my deliverer
You won't pass me by
You're my deliverer
You're my deliverer
You won't pass me by

Audrey, I would like to suggest a song for you, the song is entitled "TO RESCUE A SINGER LIKE ME" Please make your own version for the Greater Glory of GOD!!!

  2. L.... B....

WHO CARES IF SHE IS CONTRADICTING SCRIPTURE? the song shows how God loves us. And it's a beautiful song. END OF DISCUSSION.

  3. p.... b....

Just came across this song an wow powerful cause he is our deliver from sin an powerful bondgages which I am struggling with right now. Disgusting with myself but even so JESUS will help me overcome He is my deliver he is my refuge my strongtower an yes he does invade our hearts but only what we allow an surrender to an it may not be all @ once some things are a process an go very deep but even so those deep hidden sins or wounds ok r strongholds as we allow he is our deliver an sets us freeeee so lovely an refreshing💖💖 an true.

  4. A.... R....

I think she sings it till the point of someone who has gotten persuade by Jesus, and understand that the Jesus's love is freedom and for that reason you won't forsake of his loving presence. People who are not close do not see him as deliverer because don't know Him.

  5. J.... M....

We are made in the image and likeness of a free God. God respects our freedom. Love is only love when it's freely given. Her lyrics are theologically sound. Relax everyone. God saves souls by attraction, not coercion.

  6. M.... R....

Beautiful song, God can be Anything to each one of us. He is All powerful , it is not for us to judge what God is to Audrey or to any other person. He has 7 spirits the bible says. We need to remember she wrote this song for God, what he is to her ,not for what he is to us. Beautiful song to our father Audrey!

  7. A.... ....

    Thank you for your witness.

  8. J.... B....

I love this song, but the first 3-4 lines just don't sound like God.

  9. j.... ....

While there are parts of the Bible which speak of God as a jealous God, I'm still uncomfortable ascribing "envy" to God because He's greater than envy. God is perfect and has no need of anything. He doesn't even need our praise. Jealousy is a human attribute so either the Bible is using figurative language or else God's jealousy and desire for our love is nothing at all like the jealousy of sinful humans which can be nasty, self-consuming and destructive. I think this is what Audrey is getting at.

The idols and false gods of the nations are empty and null so He has no reason to feel envy. And yes, He comes into our lives and sheds His grace but we give up control, He doesn't take control from us. Even though He is constantly calling us, He is not insistent in that His voice is small and quiet and humble and does not compete with the loudness of the sinful world around us. This is the meaning of 1 Kings:11-12 when Elijah did not hear God in the wind, the earthquake or the fire but in the still, small voice. He is not insistent because it is us who have to go into our closet, as Jesus teaches us, and listen quietly and pray in order to hear that small, quiet, humble voice. He also leaves us our free will. Grace does not turn us into robots.

Even though God and all the laws of the Old Testament and the commandments of the New Testament may seem "controlling", Jews and Christians, down throughout the ages, have had the paradoxical experience that His laws make us free. So, yes, the Bible speaks sometimes of a jealous God who wishes us to be His own prized possession and this language does characterise something about God's love for us but to the one being loved by God, it does not feel forced, invasive, controlling, unhealthy, restrictive. It feels like love: it's empowering, it's humbling, it's nourishing.

Even though, at first, I didn't understand Audrey Assad's lyrics, when I meditated on the scene of Moses and the burning bush and how the bush was not consumed nor actually burnt, even while it was on fire, the very powerful scene in which God reveals His Name, I can't help but understand that God does not compete with us nor with anything else around us because His ways are totally different. The bush is the human soul. It does not get consumed, even though the Holy Spirit dwells within it and is the fiery source of grace, God does not need to take total control because the soul becomes willing to give up control out of love.

Wow I love you sister in Him. Singing beautiful music forever and ever. Even the rocks cry out for Yeshua!

  11. L.... P....

the line "in the ruins of my heart" just sticks with me every time i find myself feeling lost and angry, and i remember what God can do even inside that whole mess.

  12. A.... B....

I take this in the context of comparing Christ to dysfunction. I love the sound. He does give freewill. He offers, pursues in love, an knocks at the door. To those who open He us deliverer.

  13. l.... ....

I love this one. Can you do a lyric vid for Teresa?

  14. R.... S....

He allows us to CHOOSE to follow him

  15. D.... P....

This is so different to what some of us have been taught about god. That he is harsh, he rules with an iron fist and he is a Punisher. These lyrics show God in a different light. He is gentle, He pursues us but does not force us. He is not a harsh master but he delivers us from burden! His burden is light.

  16. M.... H....

This is balm for the soul. Last 5 years have been rough for me. I honestly haven't really listened much since The House You're Building, and this is just as pefect as when I heard that first song years ago. God Bless!

  18. A.... n....

The first single we released is called “Deliverer,” and it has this whole approach of apophatic prayer, where you go at it from a negative perspective: [basically saying] “God is not this, God is not that.” So I have[this song saying], “You are not possessive, You are not invasive, You are not controlling” All these things that I’ve kind of been taught that God was, and I no longer believe that God is, so I was trying to chip away at the block of marble and see, like, what is under here? When I chip away, what is not, what is? quote from Audrey -https://relevantmagazine.com/culture/music/audrey-assad-opens-lost-found-faith-new-album/ great song if you understand the way it was written. excellent Audrey

I can't wait for this album to be released!

Just... wow. I get it, Audrey. Don't fear the religionists. Jesus had his hands full with them too. Keep pressing on. Bless you.

I find nothing wrong with the lyrics 💛💛💛💛
I hope Audrey would do a "Story behind the Song" it would help everyone see where she's coming from. I say Amen.

  25. s.... ....

To the haters of these lyrics, I’m pretty sure she’s referring to how God gave us free will, despite being our Creator who wants our whole attention.

  26. L.... B....

Pretty obvious these people talking about the lyrics have preconceived ideas about Jesus Christ - I have no problem with them. Actually thought you were paraphrasing the description of love from 1 Corinthians 13. Very good song - I'm sharing it.

    2 Corinthians 5:14
    For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died;
    - His love does control us.

    Matthew 12:30
Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
    - He does not respect all things. He is clear about what's right (Jesus) and what's wrong (anything that's not pertaining to Jesus).

    Exodus 34:14
for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God

    James 4:5
Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?

    Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
    - He is a jealous God, so much so that His name is Jealous. He wants us to be His possession, and His only. He does not want us to serve two masters.

The lyrics are based on humanism, interprets God in a way that doesn't agree with the Scripture. With all due respect, Audrey Assad and Matt Maher have been leading worship at Catholic services where they praise Mary, as being 'most Holy' (https://youtu.be/wcU1d3tf31U). This is tragic. Jesus says "many false prophets will appear and deceive many people (Matt 24:11)" during the end times.
"Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray (1 Pet 4:7)"

  33. B.... I....

It's amazing to see all of you Christian Pharisees throwing your stones at this song. It's as if you are throwing Audrey and her beautiful song in the middle and you're all waiting to unleash your legalistic fury. Meanwhile, the loving God that she is praising in this song if off writing in the sand and listening as you argue out of each other's way. Ask yourself, which is more important...the spirit of the law or the letter of it? You are all following this song like the Pharisees following on Jesus' coat tail to find a slip up to expose. Audrey is absolutely on point with this song. And if you can't see that, I pray that you reevaluate your relationship with and understanding of God's love. In her lyrics, she is comparing the unconditional love the Father has for us with the selfish and stubborn love that plagues our humanity. Human love, temporal love, is possessive, invasive, and envious. For that love is a product of the fall. And no matter how right we are with God, our love is tainted by those conditions. As clear as our waters may seem, they are still diluted with these factors. Contrastingly, God's love is not possessive, invasive, or envious in the same manner that defines our fallen love here on Earth. Is God jealous for our love, attention, devotion? Absolutely. But He is also a God that respects us as the royal sons and daughters that we are. And in this respect, He gives us the room to run, to push back, and even to doubt. I've dealt with a great deal of tragedy in the past two and half years. And this tragedy has resulted in some serious questions of faith; even to the point of walking away and outright questioning all of this. In those moments, I'm sure the heart of God broke. It had to. He doesn't want to lose His son any more than I want to lose my three daughters. But greater than His love is His respect for our position and our need to grow in faith on our own. God didn't create in us a free will only to recant that commitment when it comes to matters of faith. He'll let us go if that's what we want; but His love doesn't stop. Our human love that forces itself onto others is not unconditional; rather, it is laced with conditions. It creates a score board and means by which to hold the other party close. But the closeness isn't defined by free will. God's love is the complete opposite. It is an unconditional love that establishes and encourages our freedom. For only in that freedom can we be delivered. For He, in His perfect love, is our deliverer.

  34. C.... G....

God is love. Jn 4:8 Love does not insist on its own way. 1 Cor 13:5 indeed love CANNOT. 2 Tim 2:13. Amazing song. These lyrics reflect the God who is love: un-controlling, self-sacrificial love!! Glory Be! So good.

  35. E.... I....

I agree. I don't think she is contradicting Scripture. When Jesus comes into our hearts, He does invade every part, but I think her point is that He honors our dignity to choose freely.

  36. G.... ....

While I agree if taken at face value some of the lyrics such as “you’re not invasive” are not scriptural. But if you continue listening other lyrics in the video make no sense either at face value such as “your law is freedom”.
Now how can something constrictive: a law, be freedom? Any Christian will understand what she means by that. That by obeying God, we are freed from sin, freed from our worldly egos.
So too then, shall I give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that when she says things like “you’re not invasive” she means it in a more metaphorical sense.
Ie: loving our LORD is the most invasive thing that could ever enter our life and will turn it upside down, but it will not feel invasive, you will welcome it with open arms as it invades every aspect of your being.

    Just my 2 cents.
    Be well,
    Blessings.

I love this song Audrey and the story behind it. I love the lyrics that show a healthy love different from any co-dependent and dysfunctional relationship that it is often seen between people. This love, you're singing about, is something different. It's refreshing and liberating. Thank you :)

grumpyalchemist I think it was supposed to. To grab your attention.

  43. C.... T....

Being free in Christ = being a slave to righteousness. God controls everything, and his purposes WILL stand. The wholeness of God is difficult to stomach and is beyond our full understanding. But let's not invent our own definitions of God's attributes just because the picture given to us in Scripture doesn't match our personal preferences.

    C.... T....

But on a positive note, this music is sick. Stellar production. Not crazy about her melodies (seems like typical Audrey), but it's all beautiful.

  44. D.... G....

One of the reasons I love Audrey Assad is because she is constantly setting out of the worship box and represents relationship with a God who is personal. I love this song and thanks Audrey Assad and her team for being who they are. Yu can never please everyone but if Abba is happy then the crowd no long matters. Good job sister

Anything that is possessive from an eternal nature and doesn't respect our agencies is a demon, not God

    M.... P....

    Exodus 34:19
19The first offspring of every womb belongs to Me, including all the firstborn males among your livestock, whether cattle or sheep.

Who said anything about God respecting agency?

    Exodus 34:14
14For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

    - God is jealous

    Deut 4:24
“For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God”

    Joshua 23
5 The Lord your God will force out the people living there. The Lord will push them out ahead of you. And you will own the land, as he has promised you.

    - The lord God will FORCE out the people. The Lord will PUSH them out.

You should read your bible, as the OP suggests, there are unscriptural lines in this. I can imagine where they came from. Audrey in concert said she was from a division of Christianity I had never heard of before. Sometimes that's not a bad thing, sometimes it can end up being Branch Davidian bad. I love her music, but there are some lines that concern me.

    M.... P....

Here's the root of the problem right here.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT5_05oxDhw

She's a great singer, but her and Mat Maher yoke with Catholics/orthodox, and no one that does that will be scriptural.

I think she is describing unhealthy characteristics we as humans experience in our relationships. So, she is describing how Jesus is nothing like that. He is our Deliverer.

Songs, with its carefully (not carelessly) choosen words can never be explained to EVERYONE within the rest of the lyrics. Be careful when judging, even using verses that seem to contradict what you believe. Many times Jesus was accused of blasphemy because of his being radical in words and deeds. It is impossible to understand what Audrey is singing about if we are so dogmatic, judgemental, and SELF RIGHTIOUS.

Anyone who has not been loved well will hear the healing in this song and will feel the pull to be reconciled to the whole, freeing love of Christ. Christ does not force His way into our hearts. He will forever stand at the door and knock. His greatest and most gorgeous gift to us: His respect for our Free Will. + Anyone who has been set free by His Love will see and know and hear what Audrey is throwing down here. May God continue to inspire and heal your heart, Audrey! xoxo (Can't wait for my signed vinyl ;) )

  52. B.... C....

I had an initially quizzical feeling at the opening of the song (lyrically), and I see many others have had questions, too. The words strike me overall as uneven and not very cohesive, although there are some shining moments. Just not among her better creations.

  53. E.... i....

I guess I can kinda understand the lyrics. It sounds like you're maybe comparing our relationship with Christ to a dysfunctional /abusing relationship? If so, I get that, but I think the lyrics of the first verse can be misleading.

"You are not possessive" On face value this is at best an unclear and incomplete description. Possessive of what? In what way? Jesus literally possesses everything. Genesis 14 calls him the "Possessor of heaven and earth".

Psalm 2:8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.

Ephesians 1:22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,

Psalm 135:4 For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel as his own possession.

Proverbs 8:22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old.

Deuteronomy 32:21 They have made me jealous with what is no god; they have provoked me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are no people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

God is possessive of us. And I'm glad He is! Because I had no desire in myself to seek Him out. He sought me out! He's so possessive that he died for me to purchase me!

1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 7:22 For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ. 23 You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men.

Those are just my thoughts on the first line. I could talk more about the rest of the verse.

    E.... i....

Yes, I agree with that. I think she is describing unhealthy characteristics we as humans experience in our relationships. So, she is describing how Jesus is nothing like that. He is our Deliverer.

  54. T.... S....

This made me cry. Jesus is amazing !!!

  55. B.... L....

Great song. What I have come to expect. I like the lyric video, but I always like to see the whole lyric in one place below the video or with the song track (my personal preference). The message of the lyrics is given in pictures of freedom and deliverance from oppression. Often "oppression" or "chains" is what "religion" is thought to be but is not what we have in Christ - He delivers and gives freedom. I really like how that comes out in this song (or at least that is what comes across to me).

  56. J.... ....

Awesome! It's true--HE doesn't force Himself on anyone---it's always a choice to welcome Him in or not---

  57. A.... B....

    oh heck yeah

  58. A.... G....

    Amazing song

  59. A.... v....

Completely blown away by the lyrics... healing words ... He is using the ruins of your heart to preach to this poor boy. Thanks @Audrey Assad for allowing us to walk beside your journey!

  60. X.... V....

I understand how the lyrics may cause people to pause in concern (which is a good thing by the way, we should always be careful of what we listen to). But when she says that God is not "possessive... invasive... insistent...envious", I believe she is contrasting it with the WORLD's way of love. In this way, I do not think it is contradicting scripture (It reminds me of 1 Corinthians 13 - where Love (GOD) is described as "patient...kind... does not envy... does not boast... is not proud..."

When God claims us as HIS people, he is not POSSESSIVE in the way of the world. In the world, to be possessive is to think of another as a possession - as a "thing". But when God claims us for himself, he does not treat us as mere possessions. We are his treasure - bought with the precious blood of his own Son. We are not things, we are his beloved.

He is not INVASIVE in the way of the world. In the world, invasion comes with violence and malice. YES, God does come into our lives and takes over, but he does not rape (for lack of better word), pillage or destroy (as worldly invaders do). He comes as a conquering king that WINS us over not by force but by love.

God is not envious in the way of the world. God claims himself as a jealous God but HE HAS NO ENVY (ENVY as in the world). That is, God's jealousy is completely untainted by the "SIN" of envy. After all, he is WORTHY of our affection. He is WORTHY of our attention. HE ALONE is worthy. That is why it is sin FOR MAN to be jealous or envious. GOD ALONE has the right to be jealous of the affection, attention and WORTHship of his people - because we are HIS - created, redeemed and purchased for himself.

I'm not really defending Audrey in this sense. I'm just pointing out a way in which these statements do not contradict scripture. Again, I applaud those who did not simply accept these words but decided to bring them to question. I think this is a song for contemplation and a song especially good for unbelievers who seek to know who God is. In its ability to do that, I think this song is pretty cool.

    X.... V....

So so this, i agree with you, sometimes we can get confused at first so is good to share opinions with others,

  61. A.... B....

I love the song Audrey, but the lyrics are off... the chart! My opinion only: Never trust anyone who claims to know the nature of a god too vast for us poor, broken humans cannot fully perceive. We do our best with inadequate words to create a glimpse of that which we can never hope to fully understand. You just keep doing that, please. Love the percussion during the verses, btw - sounds like a heart beating.

If God is not a God of mercy and Jesus is no different to our concept on of an Old Testament God and disregard what Tradition and the Church magisterium says about the possibility of knowing God and saying some truthful things about Him (that’s as ancient as Vatican I!), such as the Magisterium does and so had expressed in the Catechism and say it’s all speculation...oh my! We are left behind.

I think she is describing unhealthy characteristics we as humans experience in our relationships. So, she is describing how Jesus is nothing like that. He is our Deliverer.

  63. K.... H....

I love Audrey but the lyrics are kind of off. Jesus is 100% invasive. He comes into our lives and takes total control. He is envious and jealous for our love and praise towards him. He is respectful to all people but does not condone all behavior. He demands and insists that we do certain things with warnings of punishment if we don't, for he knows what is best for us. He is possessive. We are a people for his possession.
I still love Audrey's music though. Just not sure about some of the opening lyrics.

    K.... H....

Rory McAllister it is coherent with the Gospel, which is basically the spirit of Christ. Meditation on the sacred humanity of Christ on the pages of the gospel bears this out.

    K.... H....

Jesus doesn't force people, it is sinners who come running to Him begging for His mercy, and if our plea is sincere then He will accept us. But I know exactly where K Harrah is coming from. Most of the "church" today sees Jesus as a kind of soft, submissive, feminine figure. In fact, Jesus is actually a very strong-willed leader. His warnings are frightening (see Rev 2 & 3) and His commands to His disciples are very tough (eg: "If you don't hate mother and father, lose your life, and take up your cross and follow me then you're not fit to be my disciple")

Not to mention, the Bible says that when the Lord Jesus returns, He will be a tough leader who rules with a rod of iron. The idea of a soft Jesus is a lie, and most contemporary Christian songs have a view of God and His Son that do not portray Him in the correct light of being fearful. Yet the Bible says over and over that salvation is ONLY to those who fear God.

I didn't used to fear God, and I was a lousy Christian, but thank God, that all changed, and He rebuked me, and I fell to my knees and turned to the Savior in fear, and I was born again. Now the Lord has given me a calling to teach. In fact, He has commanded me this year to post a series of videos on my YouTube channel that I believe all Christians need to hear - things that have got lost in the modern church, including the fear of God.

So whoever you are, I hope you will tune in. For the record, I am neither Catholic or Protestant, I am just a sinner who came to know Jesus and was graciously saved by Him, just like all the other men in the New Testament. God bless you!

The idols and false gods of the nations are empty and null so He has no reason to feel jealous of them: they don't even exist and He is the source of all existence.

It does not get consumed, even though the Holy Spirit dwells within it and is the fiery source of grace, God does not need to take total control because the soul becomes willing to give up control for the sake of love.

I think she is describing unhealthy characteristics we as humans experience in our relationships. So, she is describing how Jesus is nothing like that. He is our Deliverer.

@Josue Ramos I agree with this 100%. As someone who endured a very unhealthy relationship, whether you want it to or not, it distorts your view of love and affects everything going forward. This song is a beautiful reminder that His love is not flawed in those ways human love can be.

Arminian Lyrics lol. Calvinists would say God does force people with irresistible Grace and you have no freewill.

    k.... w....

she's catholic so no it's not really arminian... Meaning catholics uphold man is 100 percent free and 100 percent predestined. It's a paradox that divides many different catholic religious orders i.e. thomists vs. molinists. And the catholics in their historical wisdom have had the foresight not to make a definitive decision, because it's definitely not the mission of the church to define God's nature and limit his workings to some person's idea... Pretty arrogant if you ask me. Only the Creed can definitively do that, on the basis that it was the deposit of faith given directly to the apostles from Jesus- and even that is argued against by some. Even the creed is infinitely limited to the scope of his nature. People criticizing this just care about their own theological complexes, emotional games, and perceptions they've made God into- which, fyi, is an idol.... But it's also a rough world we live in and those same complexes get certain people through hard times so what can ya do.. soo yeah some selfishness is running deep here and backlash over a song grounded in humility, prudence, and the subsequent reverence for God's presence that inevitably grows from it- so I love it. lol sorry- rant over.

As a lifelong Catholic, of various commitment throughout life, I have never heard of Predestination as a doctrine consistent with our theology.

    k.... w....

Al Del Grosso lol Thomas Aquinas seemed to think so... Although the mechanics are significantly different than Calvin's

    k.... w....

Al Del Grosso also Gottschalk, Thomas Bardwardine, Gregory of Rimini, St. Augustine etc... there's more diversity of thought in the church than many might initially think

    k.... w....

He's every person's most Loving Father. I'm pretty confident the Church should contemplate that fact and preach it for the spiritual progress of humanity over this fruitless idea of why God wants specific people roasting in hell. Really rubs me and alot of genuine people the wrong way.
