Art Garfunkel - Old Man Lyrics

Everyone has gone away, can you hear me? Can you hear me?
No one cared enough to stay, can you hear me?
You must remember me, old man, I know that you can if you try.
So just open up your eyes, old man, look who's come to say, "Goodbye."

The sun has left the sky, old man, the birds have flown away
and no one came to cry old man, goodbye, old man, goodbye.
You want to stay, I know you do, but it ain't no use to try,

cause I'll be here, and I'm just like you, goodbye, old man, goodbye.

Won't be no God to comfort you, you taught me not to believe that lie.
You don't need anybody, nobody needs you, don't cry, old man, don't cry. Everybody dies.

Art Garfunkel Old Man Comments
  1. b.... ....

This is nice, but I like Neil's version more...

  2. P.... F....

I just happened upon this today. I remember sitting in my bedroom at 15 listening to Angel Clare over and over again. It really fed my teen angst quite well. I still love this album though.

  3. P.... M....

I think one of Artie G's best vocal performances. And strangely enough, I love his rendition of The Kid. Best vocalist ever, anywhere.

  4. J.... B....

Never forget Randy loved Art's version - loved...

  5. L.... M....

"The sun has left the sky, old man,
    The birds have flown away,
And no one came to cry old man,
    Good-bye, Old Man, good-bye"

very poetic lyrics with angelic voice, great ARtie👍👍👍

  6. S.... ....

Randy Newman is truly an unsung hero in the world of songwriting. He's mostly known for scoring the Pixar movies but the man is genuinely one of the all time greatest songwriters and I feel he's not quite appreciated as much as he should be or taken as seriously as he should be.

  7. L.... C....

    Such a hauntingly beautiful song.
Moves me to tears. Thank you Kylecrazyford for bringing us this. X

  8. j.... s....

    sorry beth

  9. m.... ....

Possibly the saddest song I have ever heard. As I get older it becomes sadder.

  10. G.... T....

Yikes, how handsome is Mr. Garfunkel! Ciao.

  11. N.... M....

Brilli👌nt G❤D BLESS 💘 ARTHUR IRA "Art" PAUL SIMON and your family.

  12. E.... M....

Just listened to Randy Newman's version for the first time after hearing/ loving Garfunkel's for 40 years! Chilling. Just 'understood' the song or the first time ... still love Artie though ... maybe both just have to co-exist peacefully in thls great universe ...

    E.... M....

Eamonn Morris what do you mean you understand it?

  13. E.... B....

This song makes me think about relativistic space travel.

  14. s.... t....

consoling where there is no comfort

  15. A.... &....

One of the saddest songs ever, and so lovely. The saddest line? You don't need anybody...nobody needs you.

    A.... &....

I asked Art if it was meant to be cruel or kind. He was surprised. Kind, of course. In other words, Let Go.

  16. B.... O....

Someone I loved very deeply,  fit the picture of a man depicted in this song.  We were married.  He broke up with me and spent the rest of his life alone and became a recluse and a hoarder.  Then he died in from smoke inhalation in a house fire last April.  It's so sad.

    B.... O....

+Beth O. Hessler I'm so sorry, Beth. Sounds like you're a strong and loving woman. You will be fine.

    B.... O....

    +Beth O. Hessler :(

    B.... O....

Beth O. Hessler In life, we all walk a tightrope. It's surprising how quickly things slip away, especially if unwell or everyday struggles become burdensome.

    B.... O....

The world needs more like you. I hope its not too late.@Beth O. Hessler

  17. J.... H....

I like Randy Newman's version way better

    J.... H....

+John Herstein Me too but I love Art's rendition too, he has an amazing and emotive voice.

  18. s.... ....

This reminds me of when I had my second heart attack on thanksgiving day. My daughter, the boys, the family knew I was in the hospital...they had dinner without me, never even called. Just kidding, that never happened. But it seems like a story to go along with this song though, right? Have a nice day ;)

  19. M.... R....

It is so good to see comments that have been made 4 years ago and continue right to present day. I am very happy with your videos Kyle Crazy Ford. I think it is what you call timeless. Peace People

    M.... R....

Maggie Reeves: I agree with you. I hope kylecrazyford continues with these beautiful videos
of Art Garfunkel. He has always been my favourite singer. X

I am sure we have all listened and understood what the lyrics were about. Frankly, it would be a perfect for my x-husbands funeral.song. When someone turns against his family and is an old man, he will have his turn at dying. This doesn't make the song bad. Actually it is quite beautiful and who know, some old person might make a life change after hearing it. Peace and Long Life to All.

  21. c.... c....

    Inclunding me.

  22. C.... T....

always moves me to tears ... beautiful lyrics and the soulful voice of an angel... <3

  23. B.... T....

Randy Newman wrote this song. Art was a fan of Randy's.

Randy has some extremely hurtful songs that dig deep into humanity.

  24. E.... W....

He says "I'll be here and I'm just like you" Meaning that some day he will have to face his own death?

  25. E.... W....

I understand your statement, And if we blink into nothingness then we blink into nothingness. But I seriously doubt that simply because somebody had to put all this (Meaning the World and the Universe) together. Somebody planned all of this. And just because the idea of God is hard to fathom, does not mean he does not exist.

  26. E.... W....

I have to admit that though I am a Art Garfunkel fan. this song seems somewhat cruel.

    E.... W....

winters, leave religion and enjoy the song. thered be less pain in the world without your hurtful comments

  27. B.... T....

"I just want you to hurt like I do" this song, and actually ... many other songs are terribly hurtful songs. They bring out alot of emotions no one wants to put to paper.

  28. X.... A....

How is this song sad? It is quite horrid like Bustophet a

  29. D.... W....

Now is a time to dream. Awaiting death, all ye, live like in a dream. You've had a good life. Dream. Let eternity wash over you.

  30. a.... ....

    Angel himself.

  31. g.... d....

Independence & autonomy are not overrated at all. It's a beautiful thing to have inner strength. This thing of eternal bliss that so many people desperately cling to & hope for is quite pathetic. In the end, your all you've got, & that's it. There's absolutely no proof whatsoever of eternity, it's all based on nothing more than faith, & that's what makes it so doubtful & unbelievable.

  32. E.... G....

I don't know how to edit my writing.... I meant I wish Art knew how much I love this song

  33. E.... G....

And grew up at the same time as Art. I hear the lyrics in the same way he did and it's such a lovely, heartbreaking song the first time I heard it but now it's just incredibly beautiful. I wish Art would read this and know how much unloved the song.

  34. E.... G....

This is one of the most beautiful recordings made by Art..... I'm 68 and grew

  35. l.... ....

The beauty of the song is ironic. The boy is reaching out to the man he thinks is his friend, a man who has spent his life pushing people away. The irony is that there really is beauty in the old man. The boy can see it, even if the old man will not admit it. The old man cries because he finally has found a friend, and it is too late. A great message. If you don't want to die alone, then don't be PROUD and keep pushing people away. Beautiful and SAD at the same time!

  36. l.... ....

Wont be no God to comfort you, you told me not to believe that lie....... You don't NEED anybody.......Nobody needs you! Don't cry, old man, don't cry.... Maybe he should have believed that LIE, then he wouldn't be dying ALONE and without any hope of eternity. A beautiful and sad song. Independence and autonomy are HIGHLY over-rated!

    l.... ....

It's kind of amusingly ironic that people like me, a believer in God, and a life after death, have my days of doubting, and/but, the atheist, rather than the agnostic, is outwardly, (at least) openly, dogmatically, table-poundingly certain, that no God exists and of course, that there is no life after death, but, do atheist have days where they DOUBT and wonder whether they may be wrong? And sometimes things, even human personalities, APPEAR to be a certain "type", but if one digs just a tiny millimeter deeper one finds that the facade hides almost the absolute opposite.

  37. D.... K....

Zóóó ontzettend mooi..goede herinneringen aan deze lp..36 jaar geleden..voor altijd in mijn hart..samen met wim en ina en mijn Bert zoveel naar geluisterd..elly.

  38. s.... ....

    I am crying...

  39. K.... P....

If the old man won't cry, I will

  40. J.... R....

What a beautiful voice' both high and low on the scale.

  41. O.... ....

@BustopherPhantom - I basically agree with you, but the answer is no, people don't listen to lyrics (except when they hope they'll be dirty). I don't think they ever did. Remember that this version was made almost 40 years ago; when was the golden age when people *did* listen to lyrics, do you think?

  42. M.... N....

Could there be a sadder ending?

  43. A.... -....

Randy Newman already made this a beautiful ballad.

    A.... -....

Arts voice lifts ,falls, carrys lyrics with considerable skill, a masterclass.

  44. h.... ....

@stefbren Have to agree with you. Art's version is over-orchestrated and, in my musical opinion, not well arranged. Randy's rendition moved me close to tears when it was used recently at my old mate's funeral.

  45. k.... ....

    Me Too.

  46. k.... ....

Afraid Not, but gald you love this one.

doesn't hold a candle to the original by Randy, sorry Art.

  50. M.... E....

Such a beautiful voice. Such a beautiful song.

    It moves me to tears.
