Art Garfunkel - Down In The Willow Garden Lyrics
Down in the willow garden
Where me and my love did meet,
As we set there a courtin',
My love fell off to sleep.
My love she did not know.
So I poisoned that dear little girl
On the banks below.
I drew a saber through her,
It was a bloody knife,
I threw her in the river,
Which was a dreadful sight.
My father oft had told me
If I would murder that dear little girl
Whose name was Rose Connelly.
My father sits at his cabin door,
Wiping his tear dimmed eyes,
For his only son soon shall walk
To yonder scaffold high.
My race is run beneath the sun,
The scaffold now waits for me,
For I did murder that dear little girl
Whose name was Rose Connelly.

Art Garfunkel Down In The Willow Garden Comments
One of the best relatively obscure albums of all time.
Beautyful song.

Remarkable song with Art Garfunkel's beautiful voice.
This song was NOT written by Charlie Monroe, unless he's a lot older than he looks. In fact, it's been traced back as far as 1811. Nobody carried sabers in Charlie Monroe's day. On a brighter note, Art Garfunkel has the most glorious voice I've ever heard.

Just great song of Art ever!
ชอบเพลงนี้มาก very popular song when I was child until today
The story does not tell why he murdered his love..not for money...not because she was unfaithful or has somebody else.....
What a terrible story about murdering the girl you love three times......But What a beautiful melody and how beautiful sang by Art.... I never saw such a bigger contradiction in a song....
Excellent album à découvrir sur http://rock6070.e-monsite.com/pages/pop-rock/art-garfunkel.html
The recording location was Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, on California St., NOT New York. The recording sessions were late at night and in the EARLY AM hours, to avoid steady and unpredictable street noise, including the cable car bells. The Cathedral was chosen for its acoustic attributes.
40 years ago when I heard this song from Art Garfunkel's album "Angel Clare", I was listening to this song every day for about 3 months and I was in Taiwan and never bother to Study the lyric. Not till I came to the states in early 80's and found the same album at second hand store and i started to listen again again. One day a friend came by and heard the song he told me the lyrics is about a murder... Even after I understand the lyric what's about I still LOVE this song.

Never get tire of Art GARFUNKLE he is all time the best..!
Another person who played in this session: Paul Simon! He harmonized on the last verse and chorus, and played guitar.
A very sad song ,beautifully sung by Art garfunkel. We are told why the girl was murdered : for the money he would inherit through her death ! Now he will hang ,and so he should.
I like this song so much.
I read on a web-page this song has factual historical origins, based in the west of England, about 1700-1800. And reported in local newspapers. He killed his pregnant girlfriend after stabbing and threw her in the local river . Shame on him.
Others claim the song is only of Irish origin.
So many great versions of this song. One that hasn't been mentioned is the Kossoy Sisters version. Those harmonies are beyond haunting.
Absolutely brilliant. The use of the distorted electric guitar against the other instruments is perfect. The song is the most amazing counterpoint between
Garfunkel's angelic vocals, backed by pretty, tinkly instrumentation,
with the guitar perfectly matching the sweet folky song describing in
detail the narrator's bloody slaughter of his pregnant lover.
agree with you totally.
I love that it seems this track is popular in Thailand (I think)
I would chance a guess they don't know the meaning of the lyrics
Thank you. klyecrazyford.
Love how they playing the instruments just incredible.
This is a dreadful song, but ART GARFUNKLE singing VOICE have made it sound really good to hear, over and over..
Verygood
oldes But goodies...forever
vitun gee
Best record ever. Listen to his voice, the fantastic lyrics and EVERY instrument makes this to the best recorded record ever. Fantastic musicians.
Agreed. Thanks for your comment!
To be fair this is a cover but yes amazing album
@Charles Straubing the whole album is covers.
Obiwannabe yeah just hard to say a cover album is the best album ever
@Charles Straubing Yeah it's a very fine album, but no where near one of the best recorder of all time.

like this song
Thank you for sharing this and Barbara Allen - my two favorite songs from this solo album. Very haunting melodies performed by the perfect voice.
My two favorite, too. Hauntingly beautiful music performed flawlessly.
Jerry Garcia? Really?
now I know why I like the guitar .
My favorite song........
I have had a recording of this song by the Everlys for a long time but never listened to the lyrics(melody and instrumentation are what I love)until now.
They are rather chilling, spooky, scary etc and like many murders the motivation is unclear.Money for murdering his sweetheart.Perhaps she was a rich mans daughter and his father told him to get a ranson.Who knows?
I suppose it has to be regarded as a great song because it doesn't irritate or bore one and all the versions have great harmonies and instrumentation but I don't like the creepiness of it.Originally from a 19th century Irish song I believe where many sickly sentimental songs seem to originate but this one has an added darkness
No....no for the money....
This calm, sweet music makes lyrics in the song are even more creepy
The song is about a man who murdered his girlfriend.
.....bellissima
Rose carnelly
John Stephen : He talks about the lyrics. At first thought that drowned people in the flower garden. Later, he knew the true meaning of the song.
Thank you for complimenting Thai music.

Love /Like/ INN
Awesome, I love this song. Thank you very much. If you post this song as Karaoke that will be very nice.
I hope You can make it.
I love both versions from The Everly Brothers because of their beautiful harmonies and just their two guitars. And this version of Art Garfunkel is terrible good too because of his performance of this traditional song and hos voice too of course.....
Those were the good times of music.....
These versions are great but you gotta listen to Tim O'Brien's version. It keeps the song in it's old Appalachian form.
+LedZepp190 Try the version by Flatt and Scruggs, named Rose Connelly!
@Paul Bledsoe will do
Sounds like Jerry Garcia is singing backup. Great song.
Roy Pruys vd Hoeven The Cheiftains and Bon Iver's version kills me
Check out the Everly's version of this song. The harmonies will blow you away
Right !
Nobody will ever beat the Brothers on this one.
Really loved Holly Hunter singing this in Raising Arizona. Thought she had a beautiful voice, and made for a great scene.
Good movie. And yes this is the tune that played throughout the film. In fact there is a scene when Holly Hunter sings some of the Lyrics to the child they had kidnapped.
Give that person a cupie doll. That is correct they played this in "Raising Arizona"
my love song

The greatest song for me always.!!!!!!!!
Stoner Jerry Garcia on slide guitar and disturbed drummer and "Layla" co-author Jim Gordon on drums, backing a Jewish cantor at an Irish Catholic church. Bless you, America.
Jonathan Vernot Well said! God Bless
nice song.
