Armstrong, Louis - Basin Street Blues Lyrics

Now won't you come along with me
To the Mississippi?
We'll take a trip to the land of dreams
Blowing down the river, down to New Orleans

The band is there to meet us
Old friends to greet us
That's where the line and the dark folks meet
A heaven on earth, they call it Basin Street

I said, Basin Street, Basin Street
Where the elite always meet
Down in New Orleans, the land of dreams
You'll never know how nice it seems

Or just how much it really means
Just to be, yes, siree, in New Orleans
The land of dreams where I can lose
My Basin Street blues

Now, you're glad you came with me
Down the Mississippi
We took a trip in a land of dreams
And floated down the river down to New Orleans

Where to, Basin Street, Basin Street
Where the elite always meet
Down in New Orleans, the land of dreams
You'll never know how, how much it seems

Or just how much it really means
Just to be, yes, siree, yeah, New Orleans
The land of dreams where I can lose
My Basin Street blues

Years ago when I was in college, one of my classmates was a singer from New Orleans and he sang this song often at our gatherings, and always used the word MASIN , not basin street.......Hah......was he speaking a neighborhood dialect or what ?? ........I'm sure ole Louie Armstrong would not sing it incorrectly.........so, what am I to believe? Any comments , you guys?

  23. J.... O....

I ve been searching for this song in different versions cause I like it very much. To be honest, the one I like the most is from the great Chicago concert in 1956, in my opinion has a better tempo, but this is the second one. The ones from the 20s I expected to be more dixieland but surprisingly they are not.

  24. J.... R....

Man, it would be a trip to be in New Orleans during the Blues & Jazz festival, especially going to the places most tourists don't go.

  27. C.... R....

Thanks Spencer Williams for writing this song. Basin Street was the main street of Storyville, New Orleans red light district at the turn of the 1900's, and one of the places where Jazz was born.

I like it in the middle when the sleepy time jazz stops and the drummer starts rolling around all feisty on the skins and then it breaks out it to that happy "who know why we are all here but don't you wanna be a part of it" joyous dixieland jazz

  39. t.... j....

noone is really sure why we are all here what it really means if anything and where its all going but while you are here don't you wanna sing dance play some jazz on a warm Paris spring night? Don't you want to rejoice and be a part of it all even if its over way to fast... this is what this music says to me whenever I here happy passionate new Orleans jazz

You can recognize Billy Kyle's piano after 3 notes. His right hand fingers are so incredibly tender, it evokes almost pornographic associations. How must a piano feel to be treated like that?!

most of his plays WC Handy album is bubbly and brilliant

  59. J.... K....

The piano intro in this song is outstandingly beautiful...

  60. J.... ....

What I find really interesting about this recording, is the way it is developed. The microphone appears to have been placed in the middle, and it really pics the surrounding audio up, there is a depth you can feel, with the the rhythm section mostly on the left, and the saxophone on the right. This is a legitimate recording, and those can be pretty rare, nowadays. You can tell because there is an actual depth and live audio. This is awesome, I hope I found more of these!

  61. O.... D....

Saw him live and up close at the Minneapolis car show circa 1965. I can still see him.

  62. F.... D....

this is a medicine for the human soul, my soul...

  63. C.... L....

    BRUH WTF WHY!?!?!??!

  64. J.... D....

I'm wrong! It's Peanuts Hucko on clarinet and Krupa on drums, so I guess this version is from the film.

  65. J.... D....

The line-up is Louis, Barney Bigard (clt), Trummy Young (tbn), Bud Freeman (tnr sax), Billy Kyle (pno), Arvell Shaw (bass), Kenny John (drums): it's a "remake" of the version in the 'Glenn Miller Story', which had Gene Krupa on drums and a different tenor player.

    J.... D....

This is definitely not Bigard playing clarinet, but Hucko. And the sax sounds more like Eddie Miller than Bud Freeman. Mary Ralph's personnel indications of seven years ago seem more plausible to me.

    J.... D....

Mary Ralph has it precisely right. By the way, Krupa AND Co+y Cole were the drummers on "Basin Street" for The Glenn Miller Story performance. It may have been one of Co+y's last turns with the All Stars before Kenny John came on board. The tenor player for that performance was Ernie Caseras I believe.

  66. H.... D....

my favorite song...the emotion in the beginning is just to beautiful..

  67. s.... t....

Ahh... Nothing Like The Good Ol' Armstrong To Listen To In The Mornings....

  68. B.... K....

Yes, it's the best. Played with sensitivity and not hoked up like it it is often play.

    B.... K....

Bob Kemper Couldn't have said it better my self.

    B.... K....

Totally agree. Too many Dixieland bands forget this was originally bar music; it's supposed to have 'feel' to it. I've always thought it is supposed to be a little loose. The happiest days of my life were spent playing tuba in a dixie band when we busked for a couple of summers after high school. The other guys in our band were all friends of mine from HS. we are all still friends, now 40 years later.

  69. M.... A....

  75. R.... E....

Hola SNPP. que grande Louis Armstrong!!!!

  76. A.... L....

forever my favorite jazz piece ever.

  77. g.... ....

In my humble opinion - This is probably one of the best recording of Basin Street Blues... Tempo and the "Lean Back" is excellent. Louis is singing with feeling and the fills made by the sax are just smash on... Later in the tempo chang, there is a lot of energy from the solist... Every body in the band are giving the best, and while solo are done they all show respect for the soloist... This is a state of the art Band... Cream to my ears! Thanks for charring this tune with me and others :-)

    g.... ....

I love this version but his 1964 version was really great too

    g.... ....

There is a reason why my mom referred to Louis as "The Professor". because no one else can perform a number like this better!

  78. N.... R....

Don't you just hate the advertisements? They make you wait for this great music.

    B.... B....

    YouTube adblocker, yo'.

    B.... B....

    Princess Bubblee iphone?

    B.... B....

Zack krohn yes, about that. See, there’s this thing called jailbreaking, and without getting too technical it is software they allows you to gain root access to your iPhone, basically meaning you can make modifications that would normally not be allowed. One of these modifications is a system-wide adblocker, which blocks YouTube ads as well as many ads on the internet in safari. That is currently the only sure way to block ads on iPhone.

  80. M.... R....

Does anyone have the lineup for this band?

  81. S.... H....

  85. A.... ....

Era un grande. I remember him well.

  86. C.... R....

I have fond memories of listening to jazz in Louis Armstrong Park on Bourbon Street in March 2015.

    C.... R....

+Colin Ritter Fab! A city like no other.

    C.... R....

+Rick Autry you're acting like the same people who treated him poorly are now selling Satchmo t-shirts and rolling around in money from it. The community decided to name a park after him. What would you propose as an alternative? Maybe the city elders should all go on tv and plead for the Armstong families' forgiveness while whipping themselves? Don't just be a armchair critic- what is your alternate solution?! Smh

    C.... R....

while whipping themselves wtf. that would be hilarious

    C.... R....

The best trip I ever done. I have exactly the same memories of this very same place, excepted that it was in 1990! I was 10 years old at this time, that I couldn't barely speak a word of english (I'm French), but this jazz festival was without a doubt a great moment.
I would like to go there again with my wife, but I'm a bit afraid to find the city a bit changed...

    C.... R....

@Rick Autry Check yourself..No its called preservation, Iam from New Orleans. Let me correct you, racist white folks in New Orleans didnot give him the credit he deserved while he was alive, because of his race..The People of New Orleans loved (him) Louis Armstrong and they named a Park after him in Treme and the airport to preserve his heritage and his great name... Louis Armstrong is Our Native born and raised son of New Orleans. .He was King Zulu in 1949, was a member of the Tramps( Zulu S & P) and has always been near and dear to the heart of New Orleanians. We gave the world Louis Armstrong , Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Kid Ory, Buddy Bolden and others Jazz in general..The song your hearing Basin Street Blues is about Storyville the red light District of New Orleans where many of our Jazz greats would play in the early 1900's in the beginning and birthplace of Jazz. Louis Armstrong is apart of him and us.. He brought Jazz and New Orleans culture to the World.. Please think before speaking and do your research sir... This was the ground ,soil he was born in sir and then given to the world.. Don't revise history for your own purpose and speak for your own city, because you don't know what your talking about.Thanks....

  87. J.... W....

Yes, Basin Street is the street where the folks they all meet in New Orleans the land of dreams
Oh it’s a treat swingin' on Basin Street
(Take it Billy Kyle)  Camels are comin’ folks!

    C.... A....

+Carl A Thouse darn camels! XD

    C.... A....

LOVE Billy Kyle on this recording

    C.... A....

Can someone explain the reference to the camels in the song?

    C.... A....

Camel is an American cigarette brand. Louis used to smoke the non-filter kind as early on there were no filter cigarettes.

    C.... A....

So far as I know, the little tune Billy interpolates is "The Campbells are Coming". Every time Billy played it--and it never failed to turn up in his "Basin Street" solo, Louis would call it out.

  93. u.... k....
